Enviro Nominees Could be Cleared by Tomorrow
It looks like Senate Democrats are poised to try again on Lisa Jackson and Nancy Sutley, the Obama environmental nominees whose confirmations were slowed down by Republicans signaling their frustration over White House climate adviser Carol Browner.
As Senate environment committee chairman Barbara Boxer (D-CA) put it to TPM today, "Once we go public with [the GOP delay], it should go away."
And sure enough, drawing attention to the Republican objections did the trick. Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY) clarified what Boxer termed his initial opposition to the environmental nominations, deeming it nothing but a misunderstanding. We won't know for sure until Democrats call up Jackson and Sutley again, but if no objection is heard, consider it further proof that sunshine is the best disinfectant.

Sen. Boxer plays the punk card with that quote.

Alright, NYers....what the deal with Gillibrand? It's being reported that she's Paterson's choice. All I've read so far is that she's a blue-dog and likes to brag about her 100% NRA record. Please tell me there's something there to be happy about.

She definitely fails the Kos purity test. Won her seat in a leaning right district, so there is some hope that her views were catered to her district and she might trend further left now that she'll be representing the big city Dems as well. Schumer was supposedly really pushing for her, though there is already a couple progressives planning primary challenges in two years. Some see this as Paterson trying to shore up his re-election with the up-staters, figuring Guiliani will be siphon some city votes.

yeah, she's a blue dog. even worse, her district is heavily republican. the Rs could take the seat in a special election. maloney or nadler would be much better.

Paterson could end up handing the Republicans the House seat, the Governor's job and the Senate seat come 2010 given how he's mucked up this replacement.
