For First Time In Eight Years, President Supports Roe On Anniversary
Here's something we haven't seen in a while -- a White House statement praising Roe v. Wade:
Statement of President Obama on the 36th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade
On the 36th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, we are reminded that this decision not only protects women's health and reproductive freedom, but stands for a broader principle: that government should not intrude on our most private family matters. I remain committed to protecting a woman's right to choose.
While this is a sensitive and often divisive issue, no matter what our views, we are united in our determination to prevent unintended pregnancies, reduce the need for abortion, and support women and families in the choices they make. To accomplish these goals, we must work to find common ground to expand access to affordable contraception, accurate health information, and preventative services.
On this anniversary, we must also recommit ourselves more broadly to ensuring that our daughters have the same rights and opportunities as our sons: the chance to attain a world-class education; to have fulfilling careers in any industry; to be treated fairly and paid equally for their work; and to have no limits on their dreams. That is what I want for women everywhere.

Quite an improvement on women's issues
over Dubya I'd say.

Wow, and he even framed it perfectly in terms of gender equality. Way to go, Mr. President! Now that's change I can believe in.

I had to make my way through the anti-abortion protesters today, on the mall. As they have in previous years, they have small children carrying large signs with photos of horrendously mangled third term fetuses. It felt different for me this time. I admired their passion but also knew that reproductive rights for women are once again protected. So, even though I resented the exploitation of young children to promote their cause--which I always have--I also recognized that they are fighting an uphill battle. This is not a victory I take particular pleasure in-it's a painful and difficult issue--but one that I felt quite good about today. We can cross one item off our worry list for now.

The fact that decriminalizing abortion has proved so contentious compels the conclusion that abortion is a private matter into which government should not intrude.
The self-styled "right-to-life" movement is merely a "give-government-the -authority-to-imprison" movement and we should remember that criminal prosecution and the imprisonment of women who choose abortion is the ultimate goal of all "right-to-lifers".
