TPMDC Morning Roundup
Paterson Expected To Announce Gillibrand For Senate Today
New York Gov. David Paterson will be holding a press conference at 12 p.m. ET to announce whom he is appointing to Hillary Clinton's Senate. Paterson has reportedly picked upstate Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand.
Obama's Schedule For Today
This morning President Obama and VP Joe Biden have a presidential daily briefing at 9:15 a.m. ET, a meeting with both the Democratic and GOP Congressional leadership at 9:45 a.m. ET, and an 11:20 a.m. ET meeting with members of the National Security Council. Obama then has a series of closed meetings in the afternoon: A meeting with Joe Biden and his economic team at 12:40 p.m. ET; lunch with Biden at 1 p.m. ET; a meeting with Biden and the budget team at 2 p.m. ET; and a meeting with Tim Geithner at 3:30 p.m. ET.
Today: More Litigation In Minnesota
The court battles continue today in the Minnesota Senate race, with a 1 p.m. ET hearing on motions for summary judgment. After yesterday's rejection of Al Franken's effort to get Norm Coleman's election-contest lawsuit dismissed immediately, this could be the next opportunity to trim down the various claims in the lawsuit.
Senate Confirms Six More Obama Nominees
The Senate last night confirmed six nominees to serve in the Obama Administration: Susan Rice as ambassador to the United Nations; Ray LaHood as Sec. of Transportation; Shaun Donovan at HUD; Mary Schapiro as chair of the SEC; Lisa Jackson as EPA administrator; and Nancy Sutley to head up the White House Council of Environmental Quality.
Obama Keeping BlackBerry, Under Special Conditions
President Obama has arrived at a carefully-negotiated compromise in his efforts to keep his BlackBerry. Among other conditions, only a small group of senior staff and friends will have his e-mail address, his own messages will be designed to not be forwardable, and any e-mails will be subject to the Presidential Open Records Act, which could eventually put them into the public domain.
WaPo: McCain The Maverick Is Back
The Washington Post reports that the pre-2007 John McCain, the one who would occasionally irk his hard-line GOP colleagues by making peace with the Dems, appears to have made a comeback. The change in mood was most apparent when he castigated Republicans who were delaying Hillary Clinton's nomination to be Secretary of State, reminding them that the country had just had an election.
McCain To Meet With Palin Soon
John McCain told Larry King that he remains close with Sarah Palin, dismissing the idea that there's any bad blood between them. "Look, we're very close friends," McCain said, "and I talk to her all the time and look forward to seeing her, I think, in a week or so."

It's nice to see McCain's yall's favorite Republican again.

There are no favorite Republicans, just least intolerable ones.

Nah, he blew it for me with his campaign. Now mcbush is trying to work on his "legacy." I am sure that he can't stand rambo by the way.
Who's it gonna be in 2012 for you guys if the party still exists? Rambo?

John Cornyn seems to be positioning himself as the chief knuckle-dragger at this point. The rightwingers are looking for someone who will obstruct Obama at every turn.

Not sure...Romney and Huckabee are already running. I don't think Palin will be in it, it wasn't so much enthusiasm for her as it was for someone who wasn't McCain (I still don't get how he ended up with the nomination). It'll depend mostly on whether Obama's vulnerable or not. No one wants to be the next John F. Kerry.

You mean the next Goldwater. Kerry barely lost--but I know the definition of "landslide" is much different for y'all in the Southern Regional Party.

in a sane world, you'd be right. i don't see why any bible-thumper would support palin over huckabee. and i have to hand it to the GOP for eliminating giuliani first and huck last and ending up with mcCain. (no snark, that really speaks well of them).
and yeah, IMO, mcCain has menschlike qualities, but i like hagel or lugar better.

Huckabee's a "Fair Tax" guy too, my money's on him as the front runner (provided nothing changes in the next two years which is highly suspect).

He certainly had humor value.

Name one person here who said that McCain is their favorite Republican. As noted above, there are no favorites when it comes to the Southern Regional Party.

I was hoping Paterson would appoint Nadler or Weingarten and I'm disappointed that the left is going to lose the opportunity to have a truly progressive Senator from NY. But I'm not sure Gillibrand will be a disaster for progressives either, she is pro-gay marriage for instance and sure, she won't be Sanders but there's no evidence she will be Lieberman either for now. (Campaign Diaries has much more about Gillibrand's ideological positioning and what it means for her in the 2010 primaries.)

I was actually expecting Nadler too. I'm guessing he's pissed Paterson off somewhere down the line (Jerry tends to do that on occasion).

Possibly. My guess, though, is that her appointment is a direct result of the pressure to appoint a woman.

I was hoping for Weingarten too, but Kirsten's a good choice. Lower Canada (aka Upstate NY) needs representation in the Senate and Gillibrand is a nominee who can do that and still hold the seat (Byron Brown would have been much iff-ier in 2010).
Yes the appointment process got out of control, but the people to blame are the Kennedy team who were expecting Caroline to get the seat simply because she wanted it. Overall Paterson has done a good job for NYers, not bowing down to pressure to crown Caroline and not using the appointment to crassly satisfy his political needs by appointing Cuomo to get rid of a primary threat running against him for governor. I respect his independence to pick who he thought was the best Senator for NYS, not who Harry Reid or Ted Kennedy demanded.

Not to be too much of a dweeb, but my understanding is that the PDA BHO will be using is made by General Dynamics, not Research in Motion, the makers of BB. Therefore, people are using the term "Blackberry" much like "Kleenex" is used for facial tissue. A triumph in marketing for RIM this is (and they're Canadian too). :-)

My husband gets extremely perturbed when I refer to his "blackjack" as a "blackberry". Whatever you want to call it, the thing's still annoying as hell.

You mean BHO's PDA has an AKA...?
