Bush v. Cheney

Whatever you think of George W. Bush, I think you have to concede that, in some respects, he's been personally gracious towards Barack Obama and his family since election night. I say this with the obvious, massive caveat of the Blair House incident in which the government-owned guest residence across Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House was not made available to the Obamas when they decided to move to Washington a little more than two weeks before the inauguration so their daughters could start at Sidwell Friends as soon as the Quaker school's winter break ended. Still, in its public pronouncements Bush has been generous towards Obama and the interaction between the families seems to have been nice, what with Jenna and Barbara showing Sasha and Malia their favorite hangouts in the residence.

The Obamas have said how much they appreciated the Bushes hosting them at the White House. Until now, one might have said the same about DIck Cheney who, along with his wife Lynn, hosting Joe and Jill Biden at the Vice Presidential residence at the U.S. Naval Observatory.

But if you read this morning's interview with Cheney in Politico it's striking for three things. The first is Cheney's almost gleeful tone about Daschle and Democratic misfortunes. Cheney was, after all, the president of the Senate so it might have behooved him to say something nice about Daschle even as he dissed him. (Yes, I know this is not the Cheney style but I'm not grading on a curve here.) Second, one of the best lines in the piece is where Mike Allen, my old partner covering the White House for Time, along with John Harris and Jim VandeHei ask Cheney about the economy. I'll let it speak for itself:

*Whether the Bush administration should have done more about the economy: "We did worry about it, to some extent. ... I don't think anybody actually foresaw something of this size and dimension occurring. It's also global. We only control part of the world economy - a very important part."

We did worry about it, to some extent. Even if you see that as a verbal tick of Cheney's it's still a phenomenal line as in, "We did worry about succession, to some extent," said Andrew Johnson.

Finally the total dissing of Obama is breathtaking and very different than Bush's public tone towards Obama. To be fair, Cheney, according to the piece, "at several points... resisted singling out Obama personally for criticism, at one saying he wants to give him a break after just two weeks in office." But the headline of the interview is basically how Cheney thinks the new administration are naive, softie, civil liberties wusses who have no compunction about releasing terrorists:

"When we get people who are more concerned about reading the rights to an Al Qaeda terrorist than they are with protecting the United States against people who are absolutely committed to do anything they can to kill Americans, then I worry," Cheney said.

Protecting the country's security is "a tough, mean, dirty, nasty business," he said. "These are evil people. And we're not going to win this fight by turning the other cheek."

Of course, that is a total straw man. No one in the Obama adminstration wants to turn the other cheek and it is precisely because of the concern about releasing potentially dangerous detainees too quickly that the administration is taking its time with its Guantanamo closing. Whatever happened to, "if you can't say something nice, don't say it at all."

Both are worried about Justice going after them and handle it different ways. Bush wants to kill him with kindness, whereas Cheney is all bluster and hot air. Cheney is all about acting like he didn't do anything wrong, thinking that will trick folks into believing that must be the case. Cheney also likes to insinuate that he has stories to tell should he ever be prosecuted - remember he had top secret clearance for 8 years and probably had the NSA doing his bidding as well. He's made indications that Bill Clinton and high ranking Dems would have to be tried beside him in the past.

If this country needs protecting, it's from the Dick Cheneys of the world. They did more harm than Osama bin Laden could ever dream of doing.

Once a pig, always a pig! Cheney represents the very worst of the political climate today and I hope he has a miserable rest of his life!

user-pic

Which I for one hope is quite short.

user-pic

Oh, not me. I'm sure he has quite good private insurance so taxpayers won't be left paying for his stay in a rehab facility after having a massive stroke and only being able to communicate by blinking his eyes. After the stroke causes damage to his tear ducts so they stop making tears, so every blink is a painful scraping across his eyeballs. Slowly causing him to go blind. I think he deserves a few years like that, don't you?

Yes, I'm feeling fairly vindictive towards the man this morning. . .

user-pic

I don't wish physical pain or disability on him.

I wish him health & long life & a seat at the Hague, in front of an international tribunal.

user-pic

I wish for him to have his eyes opened to the damage and pain that he's caused, and for him to live with the realization that he is responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of individuals.

And to live with that realization for many years.

And hopefully, he will work to find a way for redemption.

Protecting the country's security is "a tough, mean, dirty, nasty business," he said. "These are evil people. And we're not going to win this fight by turning the other cheek."

If I never read another word this vile man says, I'll be a happier person.

user-pic

He is not a man, or even human. I believe that he was sent from a planet far, far away to destroy the human race. Maybe he is a cylon.

user-pic

Oh Cheney? Doesn't he realize what his administration has done to this country?
Especially in the Middle East, conflict continues.

user-pic

True...cuz everyone knows there was no conflict in the Middle East until Bush took office...the bastard!

user-pic

Even though there was conflict before Bush/Cheney, it has continued to escalate.

It just got a hell of alot worse under the king. Where have you been for the last 8 years? Gee, we didn't just piss off the entire arab world by invading and destroying a country in the arab world based on lies? Killing hundreds of thousands of women and children in the process? Also, the king didn't give a green light to isreal to invade lebanon and gaza and unleash american weapons on arab women and children? Hello.

user-pic

Matt, if you're surprised by this, then "You Don't Know Dick!"

(With apologies to Jon Stewart.)

However, I do appreciate the fact that you're not grading on a curve here.

user-pic

Seriously. This is the same individual who was Vice President. He's doing some PR work for his "legacy" right now, and inadvertently revealed how delusional he is. The characterization of Obama Administration as "turning the other cheek" is right along side his "we will be greeted as liberators" line of argument: totally detached from reality.

user-pic

I view this as less a matter of delusion and more a matter of cynicism and malevolence. I think "Dick" is pissed off that Obama's undoing the neo-fascist infrastructure he created and this is his way of getting back.

user-pic

What is Cheney's response to the shocking numbers released this week of Iraqis killed during the Bush/Cheney war?

user-pic

If you are talking about the military's numbers released, they are patently false and understate the iraqi casualties dramatically.

user-pic

glad to hear other people recognize how conservative civilian casualty estimates that come out of our pentagon are.

The absolute lowest estimate, and it's the outlier, is 100,000.

When I looked into this a year ago, 750,000-1,000,000 seemed more likely.

Will the number recently released go unquestioned?

user-pic

Here is a link that summarizes the various studies. Of course, the military's study is shockingly low and actually doesn't make sense when you think about it. For almost two years there were approximately 5000 iraqi civilian deaths a month if not more that were just being reported to hospitals in baghdad alone. That alone is 120,000 and that isn't counting the massive deaths during the invasion or throughout the country. It really is outrageous. The corporate right-wing media should be ashamed of themselves.

Hey, Dick -- you got away with it, ok? Most of the nation doesn't put any blame on you and Bush for 9/11, despite the warnings you had. Your military adventures and embrace of the dark side paid off by innoculating you and Bush against the "Bin Laden Determined to Strike in U.S." memo by the time it became public.

But now STFU and go away!

user-pic

Actually--and this is in no way hyperbole on my part; I truly believe this--Cheney himself is evil. He is an evil person who believes in doing evil things. He doesn't care about anyone's--anyone's, including U.S. citizens--rights, supports torturing people who may be innocent, and believes in a crackpot theory about Executive power that he used every tool in his kit to advance.

This is an evil man, on par with the evil-yet-banal people who carried out the "final solution" in Germany. And again, this isn't hyperbole; Cheney uses the same methods as the Gestapo, and his rationale ("These people are evil and subhuman") is the same as well. Of course, he can't tell us how he knows these people are bad actors--that would expose the fact that it's all hearsay, supposition, and accusations from dubious sources. He also can't admit what many many studies have shown: that torture is not effective.

So I submit: he is an evil, evil man. And should be prosecuted as a war criminal. (And in my opinion, hung by the neck until dead.)
