TPMDC Morning Roundup

Cheney: "I Worry" When Washington Cares More About Terrorists' Rights Than Protecting America
In an interview with the Politico, Dick Cheney gave a dire warning that terrorists will try to attack America again, and their success or failure depends on keeping his policies in place. Said Cheney: "When we get people who are more concerned about reading the rights to an Al Qaeda terrorist than they are with protecting the United States against people who are absolutely committed to do anything they can to kill Americans, then I worry."

Obama's Day Ahead
President Obama and Tim Geithner are speaking at 11 a.m. ET, where they will deliver remarks on their expected plans to curb executive pay at $500,000 for financial institutions receiving bailout funds. Obama will then meet with Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton and George Mitchell at 11:50 p.m., will have lunch with Biden at 12:15 p.m., and will sign legislation to expand the SCHIP program at 4:30 p.m. He will meet with Ken Salazar at 5:05 p.m., and then he and Michelle Obama will attend a caucus leadership cocktail reception at 7:30 p.m.

Biden Meeting With Indonesian VP, Teamsters Head
Joe Biden will be meeting this afternoon with Jusuf Kalla, the Vice President of Indonesia. He will then meet with Teamsters president James P. Hoffa. Both meetings are closed press.

Obama, On Daschle: "I Screwed Up"
President Obama very bluntly told CNN, "I screwed up," regarding the Tom Daschle mess. "Ultimately, I campaigned on changing Washington and bottom-up politics," Obama added. "And I don't want to send a message to the American people that there are two sets of standards -- one for powerful people and one for ordinary folks who are working every day and paying their taxes."

Minnesota Trial Keeps On Going; State Dems Propose Legislative Way Out
The Minnesota election trial goes into Day 8, while state Democratic legislators are proposing a bill to change the law immediately and award Al Franken a certificate of election while the litigation is still pending, but it does not appear likely to succeed -- GOP Governor Tim Pawlenty indicated he won't support the bill, calling it an attempt to change the rules retroactively.

WaPo: Dems Don't Have The Votes For Current Stimulus Plan
The Washington Post reports that Democratic leaders don't have 60 votes to pass the stimulus bill as it now stands, with both Democratic and Republican Senators putting forward amendments to strip various spending items. On the other hand, new spending items and tax breaks are being put in -- so the cost is now at over $900 billion.

Joe The Plumber Gives Political Advice To GOP Staffers
Joe "The Plumber" Wurzelbacher visited Capitol Hill yesterday, giving his political advice to a key group of Republican staffers. Wurzelbacher spoke of the importance of stopping the stimulus bill, and for the GOP to take a hard line. "I don't believe there's two sides to every story. It's black and white," he said. "There's right and wrong."

Blago Goes On Letterman
Former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich appeared on the David Letterman show last night. "I've been wanting to be on your show in the worst way for the longest time," said Blago. To which Dave replied: "Well, you're on in the worst way, believe me."

Honestly, and I know this is a family site, but I just have to say: Fuck Dick Cheney in his fucking fat face. What a consummate douchebottle that reprehensible excuse for a human being is. Fuck him. Fuck him sideways, the fuck. Jesus.

user-pic

Hey, don't hold back Lars! And I agree completely. What a fuckwad that man is.

user-pic

Thanks, I needed that. And David Kurtz nails it on the front page today with his comment on the "curdling effect, the blight on the soul that comes with rooting for such disasters to befall your country."

user-pic

I agree: Fuck Dick Cheney.

user-pic

Co-sign.

user-pic

Thanks, Lars. My sentiments exactly!

user-pic

You are right, this is a family site. Your posting is offensive to douchbags everywhere. What have they ever done for you to insult them this way?

user-pic

He is the Dickiest Dick of all Dicks! If there was a king of Dicks, Dick would be the head of all Dickdom. If his mother came back and decided to rename him something more befitting, she would name him Dick! What a Dick!

user-pic

Dude, you shouldn't throw a "Jesus" in with 5 F-bombs...it's not good form.

user-pic

Ever the contrarian.

user-pic

Jesus is concerned with killers - not cursers.
Get a sense of priorities man.

user-pic

Seconded. Motion carried.

user-pic

Re 'Dick' Cheney...

An evil moron says what? He makes the evil emporer head of the syth lords look bad...

user-pic

The WaPo story is misleading. It only takes 60 votes to pass the stimulus if there are 40 senators blocking a vote. Kyl and McCain won't be around to vote (although McCain is lobbying for "no" votes).

Even if some Dems like Ben Nelson or Blanche Lincoln might not vote for the bill, they won't help Repugs sustain a filibuster.

user-pic

Really? I thought that it was 60 votes to cut off debate, not a percentage, so if there are only 90 senators present, you still need 60 votes.

user-pic

Exactly.

user-pic

Well, for my part, I worry about how badly Cheney and crew managed to fuck this country over in just 8 years. So I guess we're even, Dick. Now STFU and go shoot somebody in the face.

user-pic

hopefully that person is himself.

user-pic

Also, where's my latest Elana Schor video? I needs my fix.

user-pic

(insert snark comment here)

user-pic

No, I'm serious, I want more Elana Schor videos. She has a camera presence that's mesmerizing. Put her in front of more maps of the United States at undisclosed locationsm, and let her do a wrap up after wearing a hat all day. I'm not kidding when I say I watched that Inauguration Wrap-Up video, like, twenty million times. My God, I think I have a crush on a blog reporter. A reporter! This will ruin both my marriage and my career as a federal employee.

user-pic

So Cheney is accepting responsibility for the 9/11 attacks as Bush's fault? How about the fact that Bush/Cheney policies probably created 100 extremists for every one they "neutralized". Cheney is still pimping for the M-I-C and maybe even hoping for another attack so he can be coronated King of America, when we all rush to him and beg him to save us.

user-pic

Exactly.

It can't be said loudly enough or enough times:

9/11 was Bush's fault!

Got that "liberal media"?

user-pic

I don't think capping the CEO's pay at $500,000 will work for the simple reason the big wigs will leave to other companies and the TARP companies will not be able to hire new replacements as nobody will go work there for $500K. I know that may sound ridiculous, but companies are still in competition with each other and if you can steal the upper management away, knowing nobody experienced will want to replace them given the salary is locked in, the place has a much higher chance of failing.

I think an amendment might be necessary where if somebody is brought in from outside the company, and that person is coming from a non-TARP company then they should be able to get bigger money.

user-pic

Yeah, they'll go work for all those thousands of other successful investment firms and banks that aren't failing...oh wait.

user-pic

No joke, if they want more money for themselves maybe they should do their job and make the company profitable.

user-pic

Not to mention the fact that anyone else they hired in their place could hardly do any worse.

user-pic

Sorry, no. That one's been invalidated by reality. They have nowhere else to go, and failure is now - finally - no longer being seen as something to be rewarded.

user-pic

Hey Cheney, how did that other prediction of yours go, you know, the WMD in Iraq thingy?

user-pic

I sure wish Cheney would just stick to "hunting" pre-stocked and placed birds.

Maybe he could take Scalia or Thomas with him. They could have fun.

user-pic

Ugh, can someone explain to me why not-Joe the not-Plumber thinks he is an expert on anything?

Sorry man, you just aren't relevant anymore. That's how 15 minutes of fame work. Stop milking, go away, you are a joke.

user-pic

It's asinine really. Some guy off the street is giving strategy advice to the GOP regarding the stimulus and how it's a black and white issue. How can any self-respecting Republican sit there with a straight face and listen to this guy?

user-pic

It's simple, if you understand that the Republican Party is not a vehicle for governance, but rather the lobbying and marketing arm of multinational corporations and global capital.

The "Regular Joe" pitch has been one of their most reliable sales gambits sonce the dawn of advertising.

user-pic

When in power, the GOP don't govern. They rule.

user-pic

"When we get people who are more concerned about reading the rights to an Al Qaeda terrorist than they are with protecting the United States against people who are absolutely committed to do anything they can to kill Americans, then I worry."

Good. Worry yourself to death, dick.

No one will mourn your passing.

user-pic

Yeah, DICK, just like 9/11 was your fault. This piece of filth should be shunned from all civilized company. I don't need to hear anything about him unless it involves trials for constitutional violations or war crimes, or both.

user-pic

What is it with these inside-the-beltway outfits like Politico and their obsession with the GOP and right-wing figures? They just cannot quit W & Cheney, can they?

Who the he** else cares about what Gingrich, Cheney & McCain have to say?? These guys have been voted down and the majority of the U.S. REJECTED THEM.

Yet, Politico and the MSM continue to pursue these guys and their jaded, antiquated opinions as if they were IN POWER. What gives? Pining for the gold old days of max-partisanship and neo-con policies??

user-pic

Cheney is a disgusting excuse for a human being.

Lemme get this straight, Dick....any future terrorist attack will be Obama's fault. 9/11, of course, was not Bush's fault, it was Clinton's, right? Anything bad that happens is the fault of whatever Democrat happens to be in the vicinity. Gotcha.

He needs to go crawl in a hole and never be heard from again.

user-pic

Is Cheney trying out for the Daily Show? The man who once said Reagan proved deficits don't matter and pushed for tax cuts that added about $5 trillion to our national debt is now sounding the alarm about the stimulus bill: "You worry about what ultimately happens to inflation. You worry about what’s going to happen to the ability of the government to borrow money.... I’m nervous.”

(Granted, his terrorism comments are more repugnant, but he just can't help being a total Dick on any subject.)

user-pic

So, . . .

by Cheney's logic, 9-11 was he and Bush's fault, right? After all, they were warned repeatedly, "Osma Bin Laden Determined, . . .

As much as I hate pop psychology, Cheney and his crew are the biggest collection of sociopaths.

(Dang Obamaman bet me to the punch!)

user-pic

Cheney's administration led us to most of the problems Obama is working on right now! Reports today even show that Hamas is weak and loosing even more international support.
http://www.governmentalityblog.com/my_weblog/2009/02/hamas-shows-more-signs-of-weakening-by-stealing-from-un.html

user-pic

Should have had the food packets and blankets labeled UN all over them/stamped into the tins, so Hamas couldn't steal them and then hand them out to citizens pretending they're the ones taking care of Gaza.

user-pic

Hamas knew who it was stealing from. They aren't pushing international cooperation.
http://www.governmentalityblog.com/my_weblog/2009/02/getting-hamas-and-fatah-togetherwhile-hamas-is-in-iran.html

user-pic

I get that. They knew they were stealing from the UN, however then they'll turn around and give that to Gazans with the message "Hamas is taking care of you". If it was stamped/labeled UN all over it, it would be readily apparent that it was the UN who was sending in food and aid and that Hamas was just distributing it.

user-pic

Dick really does not want it to come out that he took frequent trips to Gitmo to "relieve stress".

user-pic

When was the last time a recently departed president or vice president engaged in such douchebaggery? I'm sure they've all been asked to do interviews, but unless my memory is failing, they have mostly declined, or avoided being critical of their successors.

user-pic

Most former presidents decline to engage in criticism of their successors for a while after leaving office--I think maybe a year or so, as an unwritten rule. But Cheney wasn't technically the president, and he never showed much concern for any law or rule, or general decency.
When you're a complete a-hole, you say and do whatever you want.

user-pic

Hey Dick we don’t have to give up our rights that brave Americans fought unlike you, to protect ourselves. You fucking criminal screwball.

user-pic

This dickweed needs to be waterboarded. I’m against torture, but he insists that waterboarding is not torture, so he should get a good dose of it.

user-pic

Hey Dick, you don't know dick, to quote jon stewart.

user-pic

Random comments:

) The press uncritically accepts the argument that closing Guantsnamo means releasing hard-core terrorists. That has never been true.

2) The figure of 61 released inmates returning to the fight is misleading at best and probably just plain false. Both Cheney and the Pentagon have an interest in fighting the closure of Gitmo.

3) There will be terrorist attempts. Simply put, the number of successful attempts is equal to the total number of attempts times the success rate for those attempts. Bush has helped increase the number of potential attempts and too little to decrease the success rate (better port security, protecting nuclear materials, etc.).

3) Mike Allen is bedazzled by Cheney, and doesn't want to lose his 'access' even when Cheney should be forgotten and ignored. He always reminds me of the rich kid who smiles as he pays a bully to beat somebody up.

user-pic

I could care less about Cheney and Joe the Non. I'm most curious about what Obama and Salazar are going to discuss.

user-pic

That one has me curious as well.

user-pic

Maybe this:

http://www.rigzone.com/news/article.asp?a_id=72379

Also, the royalty issue and tax breaks to big oil are probably on the front burner, especially in light of exxon/mobil's continuing astounding record profits. There is a new sheriff in town.

user-pic

Regarding Cheney. He is right that terrorists will try to attack the US again.

However. Cheney is just stating the obvious. He could have just as easily said that somewhere in America, someone will commit a crime.

I watched a Nova show last night called The Spy Factory, which talked about the NSA in the pre and post 9/11 world. The first half of the show demonstrated that US agencies had the information it needed to stop 9/11. With due diligence, the government had a shot at preventing the WTC attack without the Patriot Act or resorting to domestic eavesdropping.

Shame on Cheney for his statements. He is trying to do his best to maintain politics as usual in Washington.

user-pic

Oh and, for the record, this:

“I don’t believe there’s two sides to every story. It’s black and white,”

is hilarious.

user-pic

LMAO, and then they continue to take his moronic advice.

user-pic

Where did that come from? I skimmed the article and didn't see it. Darth vader's rants were beyond delusional and patently false, but I didn't see that quote.

The quote that always gets me is that the 200 remaining prisoners are the worst of the worst. That's priceless, because federal judges keep trying to release some of them, because they did nothing wrong, like the wigars.

It's always just be afraid, be very afraid. They don't scare me and I don't look at them like the boogeyman. They are just freaking criminals.

Finally, I actually don't see a wmd type of attack in the near future. They don't have the infrastructure to pull that off. Now if we allowed a terrorist state to thrive and our wonderful corporations traded the necessary technology to the terrorist state and we totally ignored what the terrorist state was doing and we gave them the transportation ability to get the device to the us, then maybe it is possible. However, that's a hell of alot of ifs.

user-pic

The black and white quote is from Joe the Plumber.

user-pic

Oh, thanks. Duh.

user-pic

Dear Dick:

If we want to hear what you think, we will issue either an indictment or a subpoena. Until you receive such, kindly STFU.

Regards, Kevbo

user-pic

Hopefully Penis Cheney will go hunting with himself and shoot himself in the face.

user-pic

I'm pretty sure that Nazi occultists used the Spear of Destiny to bring the pigs from Animal Farm out of the world of fiction and into living, breathing skin-suits here in our physical realm (Earth Prime). They live on today, in the forms of Dick Cheney, Rush Limbaugh, Dennis Hastert, etc.

user-pic

Folks on the Hill seem to forget that the Senate doesn't need need 60 votes to pass legislation, most especially the Recovery bill!

Harry Reid only needs the spine to make the Republicans read phone books on the Senate Floor until they allow a vote

user-pic

Exactly.

user-pic

Cheney and Bush let the 9/11 attacks happen when they ignored the hair-on-fire CIA agent who warned in 8-01 of imminent AQ attacks. Bush didn't want his vacation disturbed. Ashcroft was more concerned with pornography, abortion and the right-wing social agenda he brought with him. Cheney and Rumsfeld were more concerned with missile defense than terrorism.

user-pic

War Criminal Dick Cheney and his pal, Comedian Rush Limbaugh ought to take a long walk off a very short pier.

user-pic

Inhofe (Okla) was on the news this morning talking about how good the prisoners have it at Gitmo. Made it sound like the prisoners are living a life of luxury, and he said the other stuff we've heard is just lies. The Republicans are waging a PR war, and right now it feels like they are winning in the media and chipping away at public opinion one day at a time. Obviously this was planned, once Bush got off the scene. We need to fight back.

user-pic

Dick Cheney, what a disgusting comment from a disgusting, and I use the term tongue in cheek, human being. His comment is especially troubling, because he and his partner in crime, George Bush, were in charge and at fault, because of their own incompetence, for the first attack. Cheney could f-up a one car parade.
