TPMDC Morning Roundup

Obama Announcing Gregg Appointment This Morning
President Obama is holding a series of closed meetings with advisers this morning, and then at 11 a.m. ET he will make an announcement about his appointment for Secretary of Commerce. The president is expected to appoint Republican Senator Judd Gregg of New Hampshire.

Biden Meeting With Hillary, Swearing In Holder At DOJ
Vice President Biden is having breakfast this morning with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, then at 10 a.m. he will go to the Justice Department to swear in Eric Holder as Attorney General. Then he is headed to the White House to join the president for the announcement about the Commerce Secretary.

Report: GOPer Bonnie Newman Will Be NH Senate Appointee
CNN reports that former Judd Gregg chief of staff Bonnie Newman will be the appointee to Judd Gregg's Senate seat. Gregg made the appointment of a Republican to his seat a condition for accepting the cabinet appointment, rather than having the Democratic governor pick another Dem who would give the party a filibuster-proof margin.

Senate Taking Up Stimulus Amendments
The Senate will begin voting today on amendments to the stimulus bill, as Senators sort through the changes they would like to make to the version that passed in the House. The range of opinions varies from Democrats who would like to shift the spending priorities around, to Republicans who want to cut back the spending itself.

Strib: Minnesota Senate Contest Affecting Stimulus Margins
The Star Tribune reports that the protracted Minnesota Senate dispute, and the resulting absence of a Democratic Senator, appears to be making the passage of a stimulus bill more difficult. "Our burden would be a little lighter," said Chuck Schumer, while Congressman Keith Ellison was even more blunt: "Sometimes being one or two away is like being 100 members away. We need that Franken vote, and it's critical that we get it fast."

Lawmakers' Portfolios Plummet In Recession
The Hill reports that the stock market's problems might be making a very important impact Capitol Hill -- lawmakers are seeing their own portfolios fall precipitously. The members of Congress who did speak to the paper about this, including Rep. Jim Oberstar (D-MN) and Paul Ryan (R-WI) all said they've been too busy dealing with the economy to worry about their own stocks, and they are unaware of any recent transactions.

Palin Backs Perry In Texas Gubernatorial Race
Sarah Palin has now gotten herself involved in the politics of another state, endorsing Texas Governor Rick Perry for re-election. Perry is facing a likely primary challenge by Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, so the Perry campaign has sent out a letter from Palin that is specifically addressed to Republican women.

Gregg Was For Abolishing Commerce Dept. Before He Was For Running It
CQ points out that Judd Gregg voted in 1995 for a non-binding budget resolution that called for abolishing the Department of Commerce in the wake of the 1994 Republican victories, and that as a committee chairman he was for cutting the Commerce budget. Now Gregg is poised to head up that very department -- so really, a lot of things can change in 14 years.

Maybe since Gregg knows the intricacies he was picked to pick apart Commerce and get rid of the wasteful garbage.

user-pic

Yep, excellent point and makes sense. Obama wants to make the government more efficient and get rid of waste and mismanagement. Seems like a smart move.

" ... a letter from Palin that is specifically addressed to Republican women."

Given how Palin's presence on the repug ticket last fall sent women of all persuasions fleeing to electoral alternatives, I'd say that letter pretty much seals victory for Hutchison in both the primary and the general.

user-pic

The pro-lifers in Texas hate KBH, and tried to block the senator from attending the national convention a few years back. Makes sense Klondike Barbie would line up with the rightwing nuts who are backing Perry.

user-pic

Really? How come? Is she "pro-choice"?

user-pic

Looked it up. She is toast. A "pro-choice" republican won't make it out of the primaries in texas.

user-pic

It's not like she's ever won a statewide election in Texas or anything.

user-pic

Good point, but the republican party is shrinking, even in texas. The moderates are either becoming indies or dems, so that means the primary voters are getting to be more anti-abortion. They are projecting at the current rate of decline and the dem party's growth in texas, that texas will be a swing state in 2012. That doesn't bode well for her getting out of the primary. She was first elected to the senate 15 years ago and the republican party make-up was different back then.

Total speculation, but it kind of makes sense.

user-pic

Actually, I'm not so sure. KBH is the Austin socialite UT grad who is more "small government" Republican favored in the cities, while Palin will definitely appeal to the small-town God and guns social conservatives all across the rest of the state. Perry was not stupid to get Palin on board.

user-pic

Can someone remind me again why, with a Dem majority, we are allowing Repubs to continue to dictate terms? How can Gregg get away with insisting on a GOP replacement? I'm not being snarky. I need to know how this works.

user-pic

Simple, it's a condition for him to accept the appointment. Otherwise, he would not accept the appointment and it would be moot concerning replacing him.

user-pic

It's not simple. Why was it even necessary to appoint this lackluster republican troll when there are tons of people who could take this backwater patronage cabinet post and we don't get another senate seat out of it?

Explain what makes Gregg worth bargaining for. NADA. ZILCH. ZERO. BUPKISS.

user-pic

yes, that's what i'm getting at. How does Gregg have this bargaining power? Or are we simply running out of Dem potentials who haven't gotten into tax trouble?

user-pic

Several points:

1. It makes it easier to pick up new hampshire in 2010. His seat was not a lock for a pick-up. Now, it looks alot better. Also, the deal probably is that neuman is a caretaker and lynch will run in 2010 and make it a solid dem pick-up.

2. Gregg was part of the leadership in the senate. It takes away a pol from the republican leadership and gets him on board with arguing for obama's policies.

3. It actually politically looks good to have a pro-business republican running a department that is supposed to encourage development of business. Also, he apparently knows the ins and outs of commerce as pointed out by mike from arlington.

4. It makes obama's cabinet look even more bi-partisan for republican voters. Therefore, it increases obama's chances to pick up more republican voters in 2012.

5. Dems already have plenty of votes to break 60 on most issues already, so they really don't need the seat to reach the "magical 60." That's a fantasy.

“The idea of offering the job to Mr. Gregg came, at least in part, from the Senate majority leader, Harry Reid of Nevada. (The two senators are close, aides to both men said.) Mr. Reid mentioned the idea to Rahm Emanuel, Mr. Obama’s chief of staff, who passed it on to the president-elect. During the presidential campaign, Mr. Gregg spoke sharply against Mr. Obama’s candidacy.

user-pic

Bah. Didn't mean to post this here.

user-pic

Why in the world would anyone from either political party give up their seat to the opposition? Majority or not, it's his seat and his party and I would expect the same from a Democrat. If a Dem was chosen as the replacement I would not blame the Republicans for saying Obama only chose a Repub in order to get an extra seat so that he and the Dem congress can do whatever they want. "There he goes again, putting Party first." The real question is what is Obama's stratergy? The payoff of choosing Gregg or a Republican for this spot must outweigh picking up an additional seat.

user-pic

Let's see if Gregg wants to get rid of corporate welfare at Commerce. That'd be interesting.

user-pic

All I know is that the "Judd Gregg," "Greg Craig" thing is like the "William Hurt," "John Hurt," 'John Heard" thing for me, but for politics.

user-pic

myself, i keep hearing "Judd Gregg" as "Judge Dredd," which is funny, but not helpful.

user-pic

Sarah, Sarah. How can we miss you if you won't go away?

user-pic

Aside from all the nonsense about his Senate seat(I'll predict a Democrat wins it in 2010 anyway), I'm another person wondering why Gregg is a good choice for this post--aside from adding another token Republican to the cabinet.
Whatever Obama does, it's never gonna be enough to satisfy the wingnuts who control the GOP--because they'll just say he's not the right kind of Republican.

user-pic

Unless there's a compelling reason to appoint a particular Republican to a post (experience, job skills, etc), I see no reason to indulge a party that shows NO interest in playing with others. Cabinet posts should be a reward for past cooperation, not a bribe to (hopefully) ensure future agreeability.

user-pic

Co-sign, both of these comments.

But perhaps it's an attempt to grab back the narrative on the stimulus bill, because the Obama Administration has significantly lost control of it at this point.

Kent Conrad, D, was asked, in all seriousness, "Is there anything good about this stimulus bill" this morning on AM. The fact that that question was even posed reflects how effectively Republicans have managed to frame this bill. Mr. Conrad, of course, handed them some help by publicly voicing his "concerns" about the bill the minute the Administration sent it over. Heckuva job, Kent!

Judd Gregg told us that it's time for politicians to work together, to stop retreating to ideological corners, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Translation: Democrats? Shape up! The concessions and compromises that Republicans are supposedly making remain nonexistent.

user-pic

Ha ha...Karma's a bitch Joe!
http://www.breitbart.tv/?p=271573

user-pic

That it is. He'll laugh it off, but a lesson learned.

user-pic

So what do we know about Bonnie Newman? She seems to have the gravitas to be her own person. Is she a moderate? She used to be Jedd Greggs Chief of Staff, but that was back in the late 1980's, and has worked as part of the George HW Bush and Reagan administrations. She has been Dean of the Kennedy School of Government and interim President of the University of New Hampshire. She has close ties to Gov Lynch, and has been described as a centrist republican and moderate republican, very smart, pragmatic and and very independent.

The only question I have is where she stands on health care reform.

user-pic

With New Hampshire trending blue and in light of the women's vote, all this moderation makes it harder to get rid of her in 2010. (Is he going to pitch a fit if Dems target her?) Of course, by 2010, maybe our new President may have transformed the world into a better place. One hopes, anyhow.

Hope Gregg makes a *real* good Secretary of Commerce after all this brouhaha.

user-pic

Does anybody know what the Commerce Secretary actually *does*? I don't recall ever hearing anything from one of them, or any of their names, over the 20-odd years I've been politically aware.

user-pic

Your comment underscores, of course, why the Post is not considered a top job and why Bill Richardson was thought by some to be taking a demotion when he was offered this initially. Commerce has a potpourri of agencies stuck in it, from Census, to NOAA, to import and export control, to minority business, standards, telecoms, patent and trademark, and other oddballs. (I *know* this is an important subect for you, so I graciously enclose this org chart for your kindl perusal --http://www.commerce.gov/s/groups/public/@doc/@os/@opa/documents/content/prod01_004984.pdf . Few have been able to make much of the job, though Malcolm Baldridge did so in 80's. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malcolm_Baldrige,_Jr.(Want a more recent example? Could be an overreach!;-) ) But being such a big picture guy, Obama wants Gregg to be doing more than offering leadership to the National Technical Information Service, whatever that is.

Bless you, Keith Ellison, I couldn't agree more.
