South Carolina Gov. Sanford: Alright, I'll Take The Money!

The final wall of resistance against stimulus spending has now crumbled: South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford, perhaps the most vocal critic of the bill outside of Capitol Hill, now says he'll spend the money that his state receives -- at least some of it, anyway.

This is definitely a change. Sanford previously said he had his staff looking at the plan, but "for a different reason" than other governors -- that is, to figure out what was wrong with it. And South Carolina Congressman Jim Clyburn, the House Dem Whip, had been exploring ways to force Sanford's hands.

But Sanford now says his opposition "doesn't preclude taking the money," and he'll be looking over the plan to decide which parts of it will help his state.

Bullshit. You know his guys were combing that bill to see what was in it for South Carolina. Now that they have a good idea, they've decided it's better to take the cash than risk the wrath of the voters. God this is just laughable.

user-pic

Boy, his arm sure got twisted! Arm wrestling Dems conquered! ;)

user-pic

"I didn't wanna do it, Mommy, it's all those mean ol' Democrats forcing me to do it."

Of course you know when the stimulus actually proves helpful to SC, he'll be the first to take credit. And the MSM will buy it.

user-pic

Ah, yes, the GOP sure are "principaled"! The GOP is back baby!

user-pic

Governor Perry will stand tall!

user-pic

You can have your way with South Carolina, do with her has you please. but you DO NOT mess with Texas

user-pic

Sanford is a pompous pig of a politician. I hope he chokes on his words and neo-con views.

user-pic

It's that "having it both ways" thing Republicans seem to like so well.

user-pic

My friends, let's use a hatchet AND a scalpel, carrots AND sticks..

user-pic

Got to love Time Magazine's worst Governor. I live in SC and this is the first I heard he is taking the money.

This Gov has been fighting our state Employment Security Commission for weeks because they paying money to the 200,000 unemployed here.

Two weeks ago we learned that we unemployed are taking drugs so as to flunk drug tests so we can keeping getting the free money.

This past week he noted that there where 100,000 jobs bing advertised in the state and that half of us should be working.

Problem is very few unemployed can meet the requirements for the advertised jobs (these two things have been reported on various TV station in state)

user-pic

Now that that's settled, I think the Democrats should play up this Republican grandstanding anytime they get an opportunity. It probably wouldn't hurt to make a few opportunities of their own to hammer the Republicans on this.

The Republicans failed to realize that their grandstanding, and ultimate acquiescence, undermines their alleged "principled stand." If they thought the plan was so egregious, and is going to have these horrific consequences for our nation, or __________ (fill in blank with your favorite nonsensical Republican rant), then why didn't they refuse the funds? I think Democrats should ask that question every chance they get. [Paul Begala, Bob Cesca, and others have already started.]

Short-term, pushing this provides some humble pie for these Republicans. Longer term, it links them to the stimulus, giving Democrats some political cover, if needed, in 2010.

user-pic

I think the Democrats should play up this Republican grandstanding anytime they get an opportunity.

Yes, yes, PLEASE! But let's not be complacent just because the grandstanding and bullshitting is so obvious to us. We MUST hold the media's feet to the fire to keep pointing out the GOP's avarice and hypocrisy down the line when the stimulus starts having an effect and the Repugs start taking credit for it.

user-pic

Sanford is such a true Republican he cannot even work with a Republican legislature and last election teamed up with wealthy Howard Rich of New York to oust members of his own party in favor of supposedly better conservatives, who hate public schools

user-pic

So his ethical misgivings won't prevent him from taking the money? Funny. Blagojevich said the same thing.

user-pic

Of course Stanford and these dopey republicans who strongly railed against the stim bill are now willing and able to take the money. You got love republican kabuki ideology. Hypocrisy is the lifeblood of the Republican Party. What’s next? These repubs who think homosexuality is wrong are now willing to take it in the ass.

user-pic

Don't kid yourself bucko, they have always taken it and liked it. Trust me, some of my _best_ friends are republicans ;-)

user-pic

Stanford is right, the money is tainted,,,,,, there taint enough.

user-pic

A cowardly Repubelick'n who want stand up for what he believes in ... who would have thunk it?

user-pic

Sanford is the darling of the right-wing think tankers here in NC, who always point to him as an example of what kind of leader NC can elect. No thanks.

The problem is, he got far more national attention saying he wouldn't take the money than he'll ever get for changing his mind.

He was on a different cable every night for a while, building up his reputation among the market fundamentalist crowd.

Reminds me of Jindal who was here speaking a couple of weeks ago. They hold him up as a role model too, because he cut taxes, slashed government, blah, blah, blah, never mentioning that Louisiana is now broke partially because of his tax cuts.

user-pic

This is from Economist:

"Mr Sanford has vetoed hundreds of bills approved by the Republican-controlled legislature during his six years as governor, mostly over what he considered wasteful spending. These include such outrages as expanding children's health insurance, funding HIV-prevention programmes and increasing the fine for neglecting to put a child in a car's safety seat. The legislature, both chambers of which are controlled by Republicans, has overturned nearly all of the governor's vetoes."

I guess he knew he would get in trouble if he did not take the money. What a hypocrite ALL Republcians are.

user-pic

Just laughable. This whole Republican dog and pony show is like a bad soap opera.

user-pic

Can a Gov. really pick and choose which parts of a plan he wants to use?

user-pic

Thank you, Gov. Sanford, for making my life a little easier. We've been deciding where to vacation this summer and you're such a twit, I've just crossed Hilton Head and Myrtle Beach off of the list.

user-pic

May I recommend North Carolina? We have many lovely, rather under-commercialized beaches.

user-pic

Thanks for the tip! I'm on it....

user-pic

As much of a shit head that sanford is, please come to myrtle beach anyway. We need the tourist, and I need the tips. It has been a rough winter, and income might be nice.

user-pic

One of the personality characteristics of sociopaths is the complete inability to feel shame or embarrassment or guilt. As a typical Republican, Sanford exemplifies this condition perfectly.

user-pic

I've seen less posturing and posing on a catwalk. So lame.

user-pic

Flippety floppety Easter's on its way!

user-pic

Hahahahahahaha. I just spit coffee all over my work clothes but thanks for the great laugh CT!

user-pic

I'm hoping people will see this Repug absurdity -- I mean I'm hoping the MSM will pick it up (hmm?) and I'm hoping the Dems play it up (hmm?).

I can hope can I...?

user-pic

Today's HChron reports Perry just caved

That leaves the Fine Governor of the Great State of Lurziana, Earl K Jindal!

He'll stand tall for us!

user-pic

"Alright" is not a word.

user-pic

Do you think Fox News will accidentally refer to him as "Sir Allen Stanford" in the graphic below his talking head?

These Guvs are putting on a clinic for consciousness-raising amongst voters in their states. It's like they're TRYING to get rid of low-information voters. How can Rush keep up?

user-pic

I'm not a huge grammar stickler, but 'alright' is not a word.

user-pic

This was a stupid exercise for the MSM to engage in from the very beginning. Was there ever any doubt that Sanford would take the money? Heck no. So this man was given a platform...why?

user-pic

Please all the republicans in congress who voted against the stim bill as well as any Republican governor who railed against stim must not talk any money. They should take a principled stance. They must not drive on any roads repaired or built under the stim, They must not drive over any bridges repaired under stim, they must not attended any schools built or repaired under stim, when their house catches fire don’t call the fire department and when their homes are getting robbed don’t call the cops. Cause you know these jobs were created under the stim.

user-pic

Shorter version: we hate you and everything you stand for but we'll take your filthy dirty money because we need it.

user-pic

So, he'll spend "SOME OF IT"??? Now I'd make him beg for it.

C'mon Gov. Rightwingnutjob, say please...now pretty please with socialism on top...

user-pic

this showcases like few other things how intellectually bankrupt these GOP'ers are...

demagoguery rules the day with these goons... until one day it comes back to bite them big time.. demonstrating how little credibility they have... (it's like with abortion -- they're against abortion but they're also AGAINST CONTRACEPTIVES.. i.e., they're also against methods TO PREVENT ABORTIONS... how can anybody with a brain take these idiots seriously??)

user-pic

Has anyone mentioned "both sides of their mouths?" The new Repub marketing plan, just say "no", but get the money. ("They made me do it.")
Idiocracy has taken over the Party.

user-pic

This Sanford nut along with Jindal and Palin are already campaigning for the GOP presidential nomination in 2012. They have no credibility and they just plain look silly. People are hurting in their states and their answer is ideological bullshicky.
