Biden Does Radio Ad For Democrat In Special Election
Vice President Joe Biden is now wading into this Tuesday's special election for Kirsten Gillibrand's former House seat, with this new radio ad for Democratic candidate Scott Murphy:
Biden plays up the issue that has become Murphy's signature approach, support for the stimulus package: "He knows people have to work together to get things done, and he'll work with Democrats and Republicans in Congress to get things done for Upstate New York. That's why Scott supports our economic recovery plan, because it means 76,000 jobs for Upstate and funding for schools, which helps keep property taxes down. We have a lot of work to do, and Scott will help get it done."
Yesterday, President Obama sent out an e-mail officially endorsing Murphy, and asking his own supporters in and around the district to help out.

A Joe Biden sighting!

If Murphy loses it will be hung around the neck of Obama and Biden by the GOP and the infotainment talking heads - "President Obama and Vice President Biden are obviously not as popular as they think they are - they campaigned for Scott Murphy and he still lost what was a Democrat seat in New York".

Well this election is for Tedisco to lose.

They would have done that whether Obama and Biden weighed in or not. They always planned on saying "REUPUBLICAN COMEBACK" so who cares?

If it's lost, it will be because of the choice to take Gillibrand out of the district. It's a classic lose/lose. They take two good seats and put them both in peril. Delaware, Illinois, Colorado, Arizona, Kansas, and New York all have harsh prices for their losses to the administration too.

Micheline, you are absolutely wrong when you say it's Murphy's to lose.
This is a hugely Republican district, and has been for decades. We managed to elect Gillibrand in the '06 Dem onslaught, and reelect her with the Obama '08 election. Though I like her, she should not have been chosen Senator, especially since it put the Congressional seat in real danger of going back.
Please appreciate that this district is overwhelmingly Republican by registration. In addition, Tedisco is a fairly popular local Assemblyman .. at least he has a lot of name recognition compared to newcomer Murphy.
If Murphy wins, it will be because of his backing for Obama's stimulus package. Let's keep our fingers crossed on this one.

You're absolutely correct Brian (except about what Micheline said -- she and you, and I, all *agree*). Gillibrand would never have won the seat in the first place if John Sweeney hadn't almost literally knee-capped himself(well, actually the violence was supposedly directed toward his wife). He'd been the only one to hold the seat since the district was re-created, but this region of the state is about as solidly Republican as you can get. Gillibrand's victory in her re-election, over Sandy Treadwell, was a surprise but *she* was riding on Obama's coattails IMHO.
Another factor is that a lot of otherwise loyal Dems are furious at Paterson for selecting her - both the selection itself (she's seen by a number of people as a "Palin pick" -- pretty and vivacious but not much other than ambition underneath the attractive hair-do) and how he went about it. So voting Republican as a way to 'chastize' him or show disgust about that whole mess is being discussed openly. In fact, I was one of those doing the discussing and seriously considering it ....... BUT ...... if Joe Biden wants my vote for Murphy, he's got it!
So, Obama/Biden support for Murphy is going to help .... but whether it will help enough is an open question. But if Murphy doesn't win, it's going to be because of local factors (history, ideological leaning of the district, name-recognition, anger at Paterson, anger about the Gillibrand pick). That won't stop the Reps from trumpeting their message ... but when has reality played a big part in what they say?
