Democracy Corps: Limbaugh Drags Down Republicans -- But The Base Loves Him

The Democratic polling/strategy firm Democracy Corps, James Carville and Stan Greenberg's outfit, is continuing to push the message that Rush Limbaugh is a political winner for Democrats -- and an inescapable loser for Republicans.

When asked if they agree with the statement, "Rush Limbaugh shares my values," or the opposite statement that he does not share their values, all voters break out at 32% yes, to 57% no. Among independents, it's 30%-58%.

But here's the thing: Limbaugh scores 60%-29% with Republicans. "There is a reason why," the polling memo says triumphantly. "Limbaugh ranks very high as a leader of the Republican Party's
ideas and direction."

When asked if Limbaugh has too much influence over the Republican Party, too little influence or about the right amount, all voters put it at 49%-15%-26%. Republicans, however, weigh in at 27%-20%-43%, and independents are at 50%-12%-29%.

There is one silver lining: Voters do not agree with the idea that Republicans are following Limbaugh's lead because they want to see Obama fail, with only 32% agreeing.

The memo concludes: "With Rush Limbaugh's vision and values so strong among the conservative Republicans who are the heart of the party's base, Republican leaders carry a heavy weight when they attempt to position themselves to act for the broader electorate."

I haven't done this for a long time, but this story deserves this:

gloatGLOATgloatGLOATgloatGLOATgloatGLOAT...

The GOP, a/k/a Romper Room Kiddies, are marching double-time into utter provincialism and obscurity.

Bush really is The Destroyer. He destroyed our infrastructure, our justice system, our army, the entire world's economy, and the Republican Party.

Truly astounding record.

user-pic

Too bad the damage wasn't confined to the GOP.

user-pic

I agree that the Republican reaction to Limbaugh is Bush's fault, but we've seen this political progression before, and you would expect by now that politicians would pick up on it. When a party leader -- Johnson, Nixon, even FRD -- so monopolizes, even personalizes the agenda, the party can't promote the development of new leadership. Instead, the politicians who get ahead are the ones who learn to stay in line, follow the leader, ignore any unpleasant realities.

By demanding fealty and sucking the air out of any up and coming party members, leaders like Bush et al deprive members of the next generation of a chance to establish themselves. Without thoughtful new leadership, the party is left with a vacuum that loud extremists can all to easily fill until someone with spine does step up. It is interesting that Newt Gingrich, who was out of office during the Bush years, has made some attempts to assert leadership.

Bush had little intra-party opposition when he was in the White House and it was beneficial for him in the short run but disastrous for the party and the country in the long run.

It will be interesting to see what kind of party Obama leaves behind.

user-pic

I thought Schwarzenegger was "The Destroyer".

Otherwise, you are spot on. Bush's legacy is so far one that reminds me of an anti-Midas: Everything he touched turned to sh*t.

What's really telling is that the cheerleader is now the de-facto coach of the team. He's always watched the crowd and now he's providing strategy. I'd go further with this metaphor, but I just remembered that Bush was a real cheerleader....

user-pic

Technically, Kali is the Destroyer; Conan (Shwarzenegger) was the Barbarian. (And then there's some wrestler guy...)

user-pic

Technically, Shiva was the Destroyer of worlds, according to Michael Clayton, as was Ozymandias, until he saved the world, according to Watchmen.

user-pic

You are really bulking up your 'geek cred'! But, yes I believe you are right. BTW, Watchmen was a pretty good movie, I thought.

user-pic

"Bush the Destroyer"? I li-i-ike it!

user-pic

And what about Rush?

How about "Rush the Devourer?"

user-pic

The elected Republicans, the ones holding offices, hate his guts over all. He has too much influence, does not negotiate and cannot be voted out.

The Leader himself could not get elected dog catcher. He flunked out of covering football after a few weeks. The Leader's thing is being a radio blowhard for dyspeptic old white guys.

Republicans disagree with him at their peril.

It is jolly good fun making him the Republican Boss-man.

Congratulations to Carville, Begala, Emmanuel and whoever else is spearheading this hilarity.

user-pic

Keep this up until every American can't look at a Republican without seeing Rush Limbaugh's face tattooed on the Republican's forehead.

user-pic

The Mark of The Lump?

user-pic

Just a thought, add a picture of him bouncing up & down over & over, if that doesn't make you shudder nothing will. God, I don't think i'll EVER get that image out of my head.

user-pic

I am glad that I am not the only one with that problem. I was going to send a nasty note to Keith for playing that loop so many times. It replays in my head every time I see Rush's name.

user-pic

The problem with Carville (and Begala) is that he will be forever tied into Emanuel because of their publicized daily phone calls. And thus every thing he says or does will be tied to the Obama Administration.

Anything Carville does, it was with by Chief of Staff Emanuel. This poll is Rahm Emanuel's poll, straight out of the White House, on a infotainment show and scores a partisan jab - straight out of the White House.

Who made the phone calls common knowledge anyways? It was Begala right? Carville is to smart to let that news out, and it hurts Stephanopolis credibility so he wouldn't have wanted that out there. Rahm gains nothing from it being known either. It had to be Begala.

user-pic

"Republican leaders carry a heavy weight"
Yes they do. About 350 lbs of Rush fat, the most saturated fat on the planet.

user-pic

You beat me to it, jeffgee.

user-pic

We really have a chicken/egg scenario playing out here. The Lump has been gathering his lemmings for a long time now, it is hard to tell just how popular he really is. I know a dozen serious progressives who ALWAYS tune in, adding to his ratings, because he reliably represents the pernicious talking points they will have to deal with all day at the water cooler.

So I suggest that many of his "listeners" are fraudenschaders listening for another cringe-evoking comment, or they are armchair political tacticians, boning up on the daily drivel so they can embarrass the lemmings (AKA Dittoheads) in the daily debate.

I sincerely doubt all of The Lump's listeners are doing so because they LIKE him. I can't tune him in, especially if I've had any coffee (which means ALWAYS), so I can't tell you what he has ever said. But like I said, I know a big list of progressives who listen in just to know what sort of ignorant yammering they will have to argue with that day.

user-pic

Funny, that's *exactly* the point Obama was making when he suggested that Congressional Republicans need to stop listening to Limbaugh.

user-pic

this doesnt matter.
he is strong with the idiots he gets payed to influence.
thats all that matters to the corporate rats that pay him.

and remember that controll of voting blocks is what it is all about.

the only way to hurt the repugs over this was my suggestion to incorporate his failure statements into an attack on the military and then bring the resolution to the floor for a vote!

user-pic

The zen of a tarbaby...the more you struggle...Bwahahaha

user-pic

So the poll says that 41% of independents think Rush's influence on the GOP is either just right or too little (29% + 12%). Versus 50% that think he exerts too much influence...

Hardly a blowout, no?

user-pic

Not necessarily. If the person being polled thought Rush didn't have any influence, that could also be marked under "the right amount" (or if they thought he had little influence and thought that as "the right amount").

On the flipside somebody who thinks he had a lot of influence and liked it might say "right amount". as well.

It's a bad poll question.

user-pic

True it doesn't say whether anyone thinks the influence - or lack thereof - is good or bad.

user-pic

Is that an image of your own face on the toast. lol!

You wrote:
"True it doesn't say whether anyone thinks the influence - or lack thereof - is good or bad."

Because it's not just good or bad, it's pure evil. Name one good that could come from listening to Rush. He is a rabble rouser feeding on the hate and anger of the populace. We have seen these "leaders" before in history. Examples of which I dare not name.

Besides that Rush seems to be the antithesis of President Obama in every way from his gross appearance , his gutteral oratory to his disdain for the human condition.

It's Rush who is clashing with Obama.

user-pic

Limbaugh's ego forced him to emasculate the GOP leadership. I don't know if it was ever reported here but Gingrich and Hanoi Rush had their little spat recently as well.

So while it's fun and games to paint the GOP as a rudderless, captainless ship heading towards a waterfall, you also have to remember it just emboldens the talking heads. You have Glenn Beck openly pining for some sort of armed action over on Fox, for one. If the GOP had a leader, he could smack down the lunatic fringe talk.

user-pic

"Limbaugh's ego forced him to emasculate the GOP leadership."

That would be much harder to do if they had more women on that "leadership" list.

Just try to find one with any real authority these days. It seems as if even conservative women have had their fill of The Lump's Republican Party.

user-pic

"voting blocks is what it is all about."

Do they really believe that "block" is going to grow? It may represent a multi-million member drive-time listenership, but those are small numbers compared to the electorate as a whole.

And of those 5 million, how many of them are considered by their associates to have any measurable intellectual bandwidth?

Why is it, most of us who claim the label "progressive" (at least in my own experience) see most Dittoheads as brick-brained knuckle-draggers who are too easily led around by their inflatable appendages? The same kind of people who would never call or write their Congressperson concerning moral issues of war and famine and pestilence, but they will robocall the same lawmakers when they even lightly criticize The Lump.

So, if that is what actually makes up The Lump's base, it will only bode well for Progressives in the election seasons to come.

user-pic

Oh for the love of... Do you people ever consider the possibility this poll is rigged? Especially considering that these people have made a special effort over time and with planning to discredit the target of this poll.

How gullible are you people? I think the applicable phrase is "mind numbed robots". Should you ever get off you collective duff and read the actual poll you'll see that the sample consists of 50% Dems to 42% Pubs. Gee, what a surprise.

It also includes the really stunning result that 55% of all the respondents think the country is on the wrong track. Apparently the majority agree with Limbaugh. Heh.

user-pic

"you people"

That's what R.E. Lee called northerners...

user-pic

Really rubs ya the wrong way when the shoe's on the other foot, doesn't it.

user-pic

At a score of 60%-29% with Republicans I'd say Limbaugh ranks not just very high but higher than any other leader, elected or otherwise, of the Republican Party.

Run for presdient Rush! Your dittoheads aka the Republican Party will follow you straight to hell.

user-pic

"position themselves to act for the broader electorate."

Would that be what he means by "ankle-grabbers?"

user-pic

Just think, now that they're plotting Steele's firing, and leaning toward Katon Dawson(southern white male, member up until 1 yr ago,of an all white country club.)

who's on record saying,"desegregation was the worst thing that happened to him."

IT'S only going to get worst, for the GOP!

STEELE MADE THE MISTAKE,not of calling out LIMBLAH,NO NO,his mistake was not knowing his PLACE.He was a TOKEN,that was suppose to parrot the same tired GOP talking points (slop,)IN BLACK FACE!!

The GOP,will further slide in poll numbers.

user-pic

I have seriously contemplated pulling a blog ruse, like the ones we saw (see?) from so many subtle trolls here, and get onto some of the really conservative sites as a fictitious Dittohead, and encourage The Lump to run for President (shades of Pat Paulson!) in 2012.

I'll make up a very dittohead kind of name like Strateshooter or something to that ill-effect, and invent a small cadre of sock puppets to support myself whenever necessary, and get some of my friends to join in and promote The Lump for Prez. '12.

Nothing could be better for the health of our nation than to see The Lump faced with the facts of his extreme UN-popularity (imagine what his "negatives" would look like!).

But considering how easily he went into denial after his bigoted McNabb gaffes, it is likely he would claim it was all "fixed."

But regardless of the snark right now, if the Palinites and the Lumpheads don't find a way to compromise their power hunger with their "morals" (The Lump is such an icon of morallity, doncha know?), they will become a splinter party.

And no one could facilitate that splintering any better than The Lump himself.

user-pic

I like it, sort of a PAC ala Borat. You could start a private invite only forum, recruit, and proceed to cheer The Party of Lump straight into the ditch.

user-pic

Shooter: 'Rigged'? Right. 50-42 Democrats over Republicans doesn't go far enough. It should have been more like 53-39 to reflect the parties' true support in the country. And as far as 55 percent wrong-track goes ... before Obama took over it was about 85. Give it up.

user-pic

And that 55%... that couldn't be a reflection of public disgust at where the bankers/corporate overlords are forcing us, could it? Don't they still have a lot more influence on society than any puny fed gov, no matter how popular the president?

user-pic

james carville & stan greenberg's outfit? & you're gloating over their corrupted data? you so-called liberals are greater fools ...

user-pic

"But The Base Loves Him"
which proves how base the dittoheads are.

Not all the 20 million listeners are dittoheads, obviously a few opponents are listening too.

Christian Science Monitor has a graph of his listeners. The smallest following comes from urban centers. He speaks for people who hate government and blame it for everything. The dittoheads didn't mind Bush's government because they knew, as we did, that it was not a real government. It was a tax-cutting, de-regulating, plutocracy.

BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA

In order to gain the political power they've enjoyed over the last ten years, Republican moderates and Reagan conservatives made a pact with the devil (faux Christians and Limbaugh’s radical and pliable right wing misanthropes and bigots) to achieve the numbers they needed to defeat Democrats. It was a conscious political decision to manipulate and exploit ignorance and irrational fears in order to win elections rather than being intellectually and morally honest and lose them.

Today, those Republican moderates and Reagan conservatives are caught between wanting to disassociate themselves with and or casting out the devils they empowered, and the karmic reality that they don’t have the numbers to hold on to or regain power without accepting and even falsely "advocating" values that are dividing and destroying their party. The survival of today's shrinking Republican Party has become so dependent on extremism, that they have no significant political power WITH or WITHOUT the support of America's most dysfunctional lunatic fringe.

The idiom about choosing between the devil and the deep blue sea is certainly appropriate as Republicans are facing the dilemma of choosing between two equally undesirable alternatives that both result in Republican impotence in mainstream American politics. They are reaping the consequences of what they have sown. Deifying George W. Bush cost them their credibility. Sucking up to Rush Limbaugh is costing them their viability.

user-pic

I love how 20% of Republicans think that Rush has too little influence in the party. Those are the wingnuts of all wingnuts.

user-pic

Nothing proves the absolute inability of the Republicans to be a governing party more than their adherence to the nasty, sick blowhard, Rush Limbaugh. The man is a psychopath, and those who respect him are similar psychopaths.

Ordinarily such psychopaths in general society conceal their mental illness in order to avoid being rejected by others, but Rush actually flaunts his and searches out new and nastier ways to display it.

That says a lot about conservatives and modern Republicans, doesn't it?

user-pic

Here are the numbers that the Republicans are focused on:

20 MILLION LISTENERS = 20 MILLION (potential) VOTERS

That's why the Republican critics have to apologize to him.

( will David Frum apologize? I wonder)

Democrats were somehow unable to support and promote Air America so that their party could claim 20 million listeners. Sad.

user-pic

Would you rather have your government reflect the intelligence and values of the many people who watch the Dukes of Hazzard or the comparative few who watch Bill Moyers Journal?

user-pic

Agathena: 20 million voters? Ooooh, scary! Add 40 million to that and you have the total that McCain got slaughtered with. But keep flying that flag! Palin-Wurzelbacher 2012!

user-pic

Bill Maher on Rush Limbaugh.

"I think it’s interesting that he is now the undisputed leader of the Republican Party. It shows how clueless they are. They went looking for the future and they found radio."

user-pic

Not just radio; AM radio, invented in the 19 teens and considered obsolete by many for several decades.

How appropriate.

user-pic

Something about that picture of Rush. It made me think of Archie Bunker on drugs.
