DSCC Launches Anti-Bush Strategy To Attack Simmons
The DSCC has just sent out a press release against former Rep. Rob Simmons (R-CT), who has declared his candidacy against Chris Dodd in 2010. And one thing is clear: Democrats are going to keep running against George W. Bush for years to come.
The statement begins with a Simmons quote from 2004: "I am a big fan of the president's and I am quite proud to be a Republican, and agree with him on many issues." The rest of the release then goes on to link Simmons to Tom DeLay and Jack Abramoff, on top of the George W. Bush link.
Simmons held his House seat for three terms, but then lost re-election by a margin of 83 votes out of over 240,000, in the big Democratic year of 2006. A recent Quinnipiac poll gave him a 43%-42% edge over Dodd. So expect the Dems to make this race about Bush as much they can -- after all, it sure worked across the whole country in 2006 and 2008.

DSCC STATEMENT ON ROB SIMMONS CANDIDACY
Simmons on Bush: "I am a big fan of the president's and I am quite proud to be a Republican, and agree with him on many issues."
[Hartford Courant, 3/25/04]
"Rob Simmons is no moderate - he was a staunch supporter of George Bush's failed economic policies and this race will be an opportunity to hold him accountable for that record," said DSCC Communications Director Eric Schultz. "As someone with close ties to Jack Abramoff and Tom Delay, Rob Simmons is a candidate who comes to the race with all the sins that have plagued this Republican party over the past eight years. Meanwhile Senator Dodd is working hard with President Obama to get this economy back on track, fight for Connecticut families, and deliver real relief for middle class families."
Simmons held a Fundraiser at Convicted Lobbyist Jack Abramoff's Restaurant. Simmons held a fundraiser at Signatures, a restaurant owned by Abramoff, and a place where Republican fundraisers were frequently held, on March 30, 2004. The invitation requested $1,000 PAC donations from each guest. [Hartford Courant, 4/17/05]

Doesn't Dodd have a potentially tough primary he might face? (Or am I confused?)

Not confused, but thinking wishfully. I'm in CT and I don't think anyone who will be a problem for Dodd has declared yet, though I wish Ned Lamont would. (The guy who actually beat Lieberman in the primary two years ago.)
Lamont isn't taking input at his website, and the CT Dems so far have refused to respond to my emails about getting rid of Dodd and Lieberman, so right now I'm feeling pretty glum about the whole thing.
But I don't think Simmons will be much of a challenge. He couldn't do it to Lieberman OR Lamont in '06, and of course the GOP is in even worse condition now.

So, Lamont would also beat Simmons, you reckon?

The fact that you put Dodd and Lieberman in the same sentence is enough for me.
So Dodd got a preferred mortgage rate from Countrywide. Big deal! People in high places get perks. NEXT! If you can prove that he did something bad, fine. But this push against a guy who's been a stand-up liberal on all the issues, tried to filibuster FISA is just too ridiculous for words.

I would feel so much better about this if Chuck Schumer was still runing the DSCC. That guy knows how to win elections. By the time Schumer got through with Liddy Dole (who was considered a shoo-in), she couldn't get elected chief pooper schooper in her home town. They not only beat her, they humiliated her as a clueless senator.
He's a ruthless knife-fighter, compared to Menendez is lame and wimpy.

I hate that insufferable Dole. Nice work, Chuck!

Totally agree on that one. I wish schumer was still running the show as well. Menendez is a complete joke.

I realize it's unfair to condemn someone for a single misstep, but I'm still pissed over his affirmative vote for Mukasey.

As if it mattered. He wasn't going to get in regardless.
Mukasey had been totally different before he went to the Justice department. He surprised a lot of folks with how much he was a tool. But he was still better than Gonzales. At least he could read!

Gonzalez is an ordinary criminal. Should be in jail. Tough not to be better than Gonzalez!
