Franken Visits Senate Dems' Lunch Meeting

Norm Coleman visited the Senate a couple of weeks ago to huddle with Republicans -- now Al Franken is in the Senate, ducking into the Democrats' weekly luncheon just behind Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), the campaigns chief who helped steer Franken's run last year.

Franken signaled that he may answer some questions after the lunch, so we'll keep you posted.

Late Update: I couldn't nab Franken on his way out the door, but Politico did. The Democratic soon-to-be-senator told the newspaper that he would not attempt to be seated until the three-judge panel in Minnesota rules in his favor, which he predicts will happen.

His Minnesota colleague, Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D), told me that Franken gave fellow Dems an update on "what was happening -- he discussed the recount, he explained how the process would work up to the Minnesota Supreme Court, and he predicted he'd be the next senator."

Question for Al:  Is Rush Limbaugh really a big, fat idiot?

user-pic

Sir, who are you calling fat?!

In the preface, Al says he originally intended to title the book Rush Limbaugh is a Big, Fat, Hypocritical Liar, but he thought that would be excessively confrontational.

Dick Cavett wrote on his blog last year that he got hate mail once that read "Dear Dick Cavett: YOU LITTLE SAWED OFF FAGGOT COMMUNIST SHRIMP!"

He wrote back, "I am not sawed off!"

I wonder if this is a signal that the US Senate is about to get proactive. I can't see any other reason for why Franken would travel all the way to DC again, if he didn't think the end line was in sight.

They're keeping him in the loop. Once the MN courts decide, he's in.

Unfortunately, due to our quirky election laws, there is no provision for a provisional certification.

Top screwing around and seat him. And I thought Fats Limbaugh was a big fat LIAR. But I am old and memory fades...

Big fat idiot, actually :-)

The Politico article goes a bit further. It quotes Senator-Elect Franken as saying that he won't attempt to be seated until the Minnesota Supreme Court rules in his favor.

"I believe we are going to win the election contest, and after that, Sen. Coleman can choose to do what he wants," Franken said.

If Franken wins and Coleman appeals, it would land in the state Supreme Court.

If the state's high court rules "in our favor, then I imagine I'll be certified and it won't be very controversial that I'll be seated."

He added: "We're not attempting to be seated before that."

Franken is going to rest his case tomorrow, too.

Don't trust the GOP leadership. They play dirty and don't care about no stinking election rules. Look to them to block and block. Too many Senate votes are coming up where Al would be a great addition and a great voice. They want that vote blocked and that voice silent.
