Geithner Squirms About Bonuses

Frustrated by the recent bonus bonanza Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Calif.) asks for a chart of bonus statistics for all TARP recipients. Geithner demurs. Check it out.

All of these twits want to be the star of their local 6pm newscast.

What exactly would providing a chart of all bonuses accomplish? Are the Dems currently unhappy with the pitchfork wielding crowds that have gathered outside AIG and wish to now distribute torches and maps to other financials?

Sorry, but I'm getting rather tired of the grandstanding and wish that congress would get on with more important things like, oh, I don't know, healthcare, energy policy, something, anything.

Second this.

Providing a chart of all the bonuses might reveal how extensive the bonus bonanza actually is, and further illuminate how different Wall St. is from Main St. That's not necessarily a bad thing. Furthermore, it might also reveal how strong the link is between the current Administration and Wall. St. executives. That's not necessarily a bad thing, either. For too long, the financial world has held too strong a grip on the political world. Sunshine would be nice.

The problem is, though, that Congress/cable news/blogosphere will just use it to score cheap political gains, the public will continue to be outraged, and we're not any closer to getting out of this mess.

How will it show connections between the Administration and Wall Street?

I guess I was thinking of Geithner's actions before he was Sec. Treasury. And the involvement of his office (last fall) in the negotiations that took place with respect to TARP.

Where are the minute long video's where Geithner answered something "correctly"? Or is TPM all about painting Geithner and thus Obama in as negative light as possible?

Sachs COULD play a role in Geithners plan, Geithner thinks his plan will work (and if he had contingencies the story would have been "Even Geithner doesn't think his plan will work", and now Geithner isn't going to publish the names of private citizens salaries probably because the next request would have been their address and phone numbers.

It certainly does seem that way, which is very disappointing. I thought TPM was above this sort of thing.

TPM does a mountain of great work but it's harder to tease out the substantive threads of that work now that the work volume is up and a small but significant portion of that volume is daily shit-stirring in the manner of The Politico.

Couldn't agree with joejoejoe more.

(Who writes your headlines now? ("Geithner Squirms About Bonuses
By Brian Beutler - March 24, 2009, 1:31PM.")

The man did not squirm, perhaps he rejected the premise of the (stupid, self serving) question.

Not only is TPM sounding like the Politico, it is linking way to much lately to The Politico. What happened to the slogan "In DC, but not Of DC" You should be critical of whomever you wish, but please try to be honest and substantive about it. Cut out the hackery.
