GOP Pollster: Dem Leads For Missouri Senate Race
A new Republican poll, from the firm Wilson Research, shows that Democrats are starting out with the advantage to pick up the Missouri Senate seat of retiring GOPer Kit Bond in 2010.
When matching up presumptive Democratic nominee Robin Carnahan against Rep. Roy Blunt, the former House GOP whip, Carnahan is ahead 47%-43%. Against former state Treasurer Sarah Steelman, who ran unsuccessfully in the primary for governor last year, Carnahan is up 47%-39%. The margin of error is ±4%.
Blunt is currently the frontrunner for the nomination, but the pollster sees some serious problems for him, with high negatives: "My conclusion is that he starts out with serious issues that are difficult to overcome in the general election, if not the primary."

Good news, I'm hoping this seat is Carnahan's and by golly if the Dems work hard to define the issues while the Republicans are beating themselves up we'll have 60 and then some.

Steelman is a former state treasurer known to few beyond the party faithful. Blunt is from the Ashcroft branch of the MO GOP and we still haven't heard the real reason why his son suddenly decided not to run for re-election in '08. Unless the political climate changes radically this will be an easy pickup. I just wish the progressive wing of the MO GOP had a bigger bench instead of electing another moderate like Carnahan.
