Hoyer Adds Fuel to the Budget Fire
Steny Hoyer (D-MD), the number two Democrat in the House has put out a fairly suggestive flyer hammering Republicans in both bodies for their sudden and hypocritical aversion to passing controversial legislation via budget reconciliation. It reads in part:
The budget reconciliation process has been used most years since it was first used in 1980, including in recent years when Republicans controlled Congress and considered the following legislation:
- 2005 - Legislation That Reduced Spending on Medicaid and Raised Premiums on Upper-Income Medicare Beneficiaries
- 2003 - President Bush's 2003 Tax Cuts
- 2001 - President Bush's Signature $1.35 Trillion Tax Cut
- 2000 - $292 Billion "Marriage Penalty" Tax Cut (VETOED)
- 1997 - Balanced Budget Act
- 1996 - Legislation to Enact Welfare Reform
- 1995 - "Contract With America" Agenda
And then it names names. Specifically, it calls out such influential Republicans as John Boehner, Judd Gregg, and Charles Grassley, who as recently as three years ago were singing the praises of the reconciliation process as a way to circumvent Democratic filibuster efforts. But now, in an unsurprising twist, they strongly oppose it. Just last week, in a somewhat melodramatic episode, Gregg compared the maneuver to "running over the minority, putting them in cement and throwing them in the Chicago River."
This all occurs against the backdrop of a brewing controversy over the possibility that Democrats will try to pass several aspects of Obama's agenda via reconciliation. And whether they genuinely intend to go that route, or are trying to pressure Republicans into crossing the aisle on issues like climate change and health reform, Hoyer's move is more fuel for the fire.
The whole flyer can be seen here.

Exactly what they should be doing - Shout it from the roof top. The GOP doesn't get to whitewash their actions during the 8 years of the Bush Administration. They should be forced to own up to everything they did.

Of course the GOP can probably release a similar list of quotes from Dems slamming the process...

And the correct response to that is something like, "wow. The Party of Hypocrisy is once again accusing us of being hypocrites. OK. So we're all hypocrites. Your point is still proven invalid beyond all reasonable doubt, and we're still doing this because you people don't even care enough about fixing the country to care what's in the bill you're blocking."

My problem with Hoyer's list is that it does not include Reagan who use the budget to bring us REAGONOMICS and is the core platform for why we are in the financial debacle we are today.
Regan started the process..the intervening years with only one Democrat President who tried to curtail their heading off the cliff.

Excellent. Now all we need is a mainstream media with an awareness that history goes back more than 1 year...

Their history goes back as far as the latest press release they've been handed by the wing-nuts.

Too bad they never read what they write themselves.

Oh so you think folks like Ed Henry will understand what they are speaking about BEFORE they start talking? Good Luck

I sure as hell hope this is the game plan because the Senate will kill Obama's budget and agenda for change otherwise. It is time to demand that the future be realized and not short changed by narrow minded politicians. We must think in terms of 10, 20, 30 years to tackle of critical issues of our times. Drive the train Democrats! We are on board for the ride!

Yes. And that is why we have to organize and mobilize folks who want change. WE are theCHANGE only we have the POWER to make congress ACT by being politically active about the process.

Atta boy, Steny!
Full speed ahead.
The country voted for big CHANGE.
If we don't do this, Repubs like Gregg, McConnell and Grassley will filibuster it, with chicken-hearted jerks Voinovich and Specter bleeting "me too.".
Is there a bigger asswipe than Judd Gregg?
What an unbelievable jerk.

O but that is the beauty of Obama's plan. They canNOT filibuster the budget. It only needs 50 votes!!!
That is why O'connell, Boehner and Cantor were groaning during Obama's not State of the Union address, when he told them 'the budget I am putting forward" they visibly grimaced.
We do NOT need their votes, their choice is only how to spend the money not whether to spend it, and that is the same tactic Reagan used.
We can WIN this if folks PAY attention and do not get distracted with the media stories.
They WANT us to get hung up in their faux outrage and the 'special olymics' comments..to divert our attention and make it seem like the public does not support Obama. That is the entire point of their message agenda.
And it is the reason Obama has done an independent media blitz...he knows he has to go directly to the people to be heard. Thus, the town hall, his press statement on Tues and his op=ed.
Obama is doing everything he can from his bully pulpit to get ouT HIS message.

Chris was discussing this on HardBall tonight. He kept saying that Obama has to "spend his political capital" in his first year to get health care and tax cuts for the middle class because nothing gets done after that, and on and on.
What these people don't get is that this country is ready! It isn't just Obama's capital, it is a strong desire from the electorate to finally have health care that is not linked to an employer.
How many potential entrepreneurs have taken boring jobs just to get their families insured? How much innovation have we missed out on just because of that? But even leaving that aside, if the republicans kill health care, they do so at their peril.
I am tired of the talking heads not getting it; just assuming it is Obama's pie in the sky.

The country is ready. But they must make their voices HEARD. Over and beyond the MSM who has the politicians believeing we do NOT support the budget.
Everything we voted for is in the budget.
We have to act and not become distracted. That is why it is critically important to call congress people and Senators..,.so they know that the nation has the political will to back them. And that the GOP and their memes will not be a political backlash!!!

Brian, these comments in a memo only go so far. We know that in today's 24hour cable cycle only visual clips and soundbytes carry the day. Do you guys have the ability to search for these video clips (CSPAN or elsewhere) with Gregg, Boehner, et al. making their case for reconciliation?

This makes me kind of sad we didn't get Gregg. The man is full of brilliant ideas. I'd like to implement his "running over the minority, putting them in cement and throwing them in the Chicago River." plan.
