TPMDC Morning Roundup

Jindal: Do I Want Obama To Fail? It Depends
At an NRCC dinner last night in Washington, Bobby Jindal blasted Democrats for demanding that Republicans not want President Obama to fail. "Make no mistake: Anything other than an immediate and compliant, 'Why no sir, I don't want the president to fail,' is treated as some sort of act of treason, civil disobedience or political obstructionism," said Jindal, going on to explain the bottom line: "My answer to the question is very simple: 'Do you want the president to fail?' It depends on what he is trying to do."

Obama's Day Ahead
President Obama is meeting in the Oval Office with NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer at 10:45 a.m. ET. At 1 p.m. ET, he will meet on Capitol Hill with the Senate Democratic Caucus, where he is expected to discuss his budget proposal. At 5:05 p.m. ET, he and Vice President Biden will host an event in the East Room to commemorate Greek Independence Day. And tonight he will speak at two DNC fundraisers: An 8:15 p.m. ET event at the National Women in the Arts Museum, and at 9 p.m. ET in Warner Theater.

Biden Meeting With Pelosi
Vice President Biden will be having lunch at the Capitol today with Nancy Pelosi.

Iraq Ambassador Nominee Getting Hearing Today
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee will be holding a hearing at 9:30 a.m. ET, on the nomination of Christopher Hill to be U.S. Ambassador to Iraq. Hill's nomination has thus far been objected to by John McCain and some other prominent Republican Senators, though he has the support of others such as Sen. Richard Lugar (R-IN).

Pelosi: Threat Of Bonus Tax Already Working
Nancy Pelosi told reporters yesterday that the threat from Congress to pass the bonus tax is already working, in that some AIG bonuses are being returned voluntarily. Pelosi said the House's proposal of a 90% tax "will have accomplished what we set out to do, which is to get the taxpayers' money back. And to do it right away."

Poll: Hillary Getting High Approval
A new CNN poll finds that Hillary Clinton has an approval rating of 71% in her performance as Secretary of State. This number is ten points higher than where Condoleezza Rice was in March 2005, the equivalent point in her own time as Secretary of State -- and even includes a 50% approval among self-identified Republicans.

Report: Cantor Hits Bump With House GOP
The Hill reports that House Minority Whip Eric Cantor has run into a rough patch among the House GOP, thanks to his vote for the bonus tax that other top Republicans opposed. Said one anonymous legislator: "When your whip votes against you, it's kind of tough to whip for it."

Media Critics: Obama Needs to Attend 'Anger NON-Management Class'

To get back to yesterday's major story, I'd want to point out that reports of EFCA's death are greatly exaggerated. Sure, Arlen Specter's opposition is quite a blow since he co-sponsored it last time. But there are other Republicans who have left the door open to supporting a compromise. The question is whether it's worth watering down the legislation a bit or whether it's wort waiting for 2011.

"Pelosi: Threat Of Bonus Tax Already Working"
"Report: Cantor Hits Bump With House GOP"

Those headlines encapsulate the reasons why it was a smart political move. Mission(s) accomplished, now everybody can move on to more important matters.

user-pic

Jindal has become an object of ridicule and derision.

user-pic

And he evidently isn't acquainted with the First Rule of Holes.

user-pic

YET while Obama was answering questions from our mind-blanked mainstream media . . .

Governor (and noted 'anchor-baby') Piyush Jindahl was throwing a fund-raiser for the Republicant Party that netted the elephant worshippers SIX million dollars (Talk about bonuses that need to be taxed).

NEVER under estimate folks rush to stupidity or avarice.

user-pic

Off topic (slightly):
Is Richard Adolf's use of "Piyush Jindahl" comparable to Ann Coulter's use of "B. Hussein Obama," and if it is, who here will call him out for being the xenophobe he obviously is?

user-pic

Actually, exactly the opposite is truth. The moniker "Bobby" (as in Bobby Brady of the Brady Bunch . . . Where Mr. Jindal adopted his nom de plume from) is not his name. Mr. Jindal disrespects us by hiding his proud heritage.

Ms Coulter is a racist haranguer seeking to obscure reality.

user-pic

Hey Pateush so its ok to want Obama to fail but not ok to wish Bush failure.

user-pic

Appears to me that Jindal is trying to have it both ways with his "it depends" comment. He wants Obama to fail for sure, but he's taking the middle ground so as not to piss off Rush and Moderates...I guess.

There is hope! (even with these AIG and Madoff scandals) A Madoff victim reportedly won the lottery using Madoff's prison ID numbers. Who needs the stimulus plan when you can win $1500... if only there was enough luck to go around.

No, hey Bobby Joe Jim Bob, makes a fair point. After all, I wanted Bush to fail in his plan to reduce the Constitution to toilet paper and expand the police state mentality in our airports to the country as a whole. However, I do seem to recall the guys you were talking to calling anyone who wanted Bush to fail in that endeavor an angry, adrift godless traitor.

user-pic

"When your whip votes against you, it's kind of tough to whip for it."

Sweet! It'd be nice if the House GOP caucus wised up to what a weasel Eric Cantor is and dumped him, but wising is not something they do well, and his replacement would not doubt be some horror as well. But Cantor bugs me more than most of the GOP'ers. I'm not exactly sure why.

user-pic

Oh this Bobby. Trying hard to play in the big league yet never hitting the ball.

user-pic

jindal is seeen by many in the GOP as the "future" of the party and an "ideas" man and yet, he hasn't expressed any new IDEAS. sure, he's told what he's against (volcano monitoring, creating jobs etc) but being AGAINST something isn't an idea...

my point is, if this guy is the best the GOP has to offer their goose is cooked for awhile...

user-pic

We can only hope Jindal is the future of the Republicans. For the reason you mentioned.

user-pic

Palin/Jindal or Jindal/Palin for 2012. Either is perfect, for President Obama 2012 that is.

PEACE

user-pic

Shorter Bobby Jindal: "What Rush said."

Alternate translation: "I only want Obama to fail if he does things I don't like. What's wrong with that?"

user-pic

I want to know how is it that the big media is full of distorters and liars in regard to anything the Democrats or Obama propose. They seem to line up behind reports of Republican talking points. Don't these organizations have editors or some sort of responsible managers? I have given up - this is the sort of thing that could justify the failure of the major newspapers who play along with the BushReagan political claptrap, it seems that they have been doing it so long they actually believe their reporting on such things as climate change or blaming Obama for the financial crisis we face, Good Riddance I sayand a pox on their houses - if they have one left.
