Leading House GOPer Agrees With Rush Limbaugh, Wants Obama To Fail

Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN), who is the third-highest member of the House GOP in his role as conference chairman, appeared yesterday on CNN and quite loudly agreed with Rush Limbaugh -- he wants President Obama to fail:

Rick Sanchez: Do you want Barack Obama to fail?

Pence: Oh, come on, Rick. Nice try. I know what Rush Limbaugh meant. I actually listened to him about a month ago when he made this point on the air. I heard much of his speech on Saturday.

Look, everybody wants America to succeed. But everyone like me, like Rush Limbaugh and others who believes in limited government, who believes in conservative values, wants the policies that this administration is bringing forward -- higher taxes, a massive increase in government spending, a huge increase in the role of government in our daily lives, a departure from traditional values -- you bet, we want those policies to fail.

Because, Rick, we know big government, increases in debt, the micromanagement of the economy out of Washington, D.C. is a policy that will fail. It has failed throughout the last century, across the globe...

(Transcript via Nexis.)

Now let's think about this for a minute. When the stimulus bill was just on the verge of final passage, Rush Limbaugh said the following, still posted on his Web site: "And after this stimulus bill package passes, I want it to fail."

And Pence says here that he's a Rush-listener. So please, tell us what Rush really means when he says he wants Obama and his policies to fail.

Uh, when did obama ever say that he wanted to micromanage the economy? I don't recall that one.

These fools are delusional. Nobody ever said they wanted the king to fail. That would have been stupid and nobody wanted him to fail. People wanted him to fail in responding to katrina? People wanted him to fail in iraq? People wanted him to fail in going after terrorists? Nope. These bozos are really outrageous.

You have to know that none of this is genuine. This isn't about small government, overspending or any of the supposed ideological disagreements Rush and his minions have with President Obama.

It's about power, plain and simple. They see Obama as a threat, and they will make the noise of revolution - regardless of whom they may be instigating - in order to stop him. Him being a Democrat isn't enough. They have to make him into King George. (And no, by that I don't mean Bush.)

These people know precisely what they're doing. What they don't seem to know is that it's not working (politically) outside of the bubble they exist in. But for many of them, it may not matter. Their districts will re-elect them, so all is well. And if the revolution they're inciting does arrive, they'll likely blame the man they're propping up (Rush) when it fails.

I'm not sure that waiting for the other guys to fail, while they are busy helping Americans, is the best way to succeed. Maybe if you listen to a 14 year old boy for political strategy advice... but who would do that?

This is great -- get the Goopers parsing their own language. That used to be how liberals got tripped up. Yeah, make them explain themselves over and over and over...

user-pic

Shorter Rush/Pence: We only want America to succeed when the Republicans are in charge.

Simple.

user-pic

Change: "...ONLY when Republicans are in charge."

user-pic

The problem is that there is no historical basis for republicans to claim that. The last 8 years were a failure. The b-movie actor was a failure. It takes a hell of alot of spin to make that one a success for the american people. Zero basis for the republicans claims, including zero basis of fiscal responsibility. They have none. Delay was tripping all over the place last night on softball about the failure of the last 8 years, but it wasn't, but it was. It was hilarious to watch.

user-pic

Hello.
Who cares what these people (Repubs) want or think? Why are we wasting our time talking about what Limbaugh, Jindal, Pence and the rest of the Repubs want? They really don't count here. Being irrationally negative (such as wanting the country to fail so they can prove their point) is the only way the Repubs can get any attention nowadays so let's not help them by continuing the discussion.
Let us use all of our collective energy trying to make the stimulus and the budget work and to stay positive.
The Moose

Well, maybe we can just get them to agree to pass the whole Obama agenda - so they can see if it fails. If they want failure and they believe the policies will fail, let's call their bluff! We can say: Ok, help us see if these things fail! Help us pass the legislation - and we'll have the experiment. If you're right, they will fail.

But if the experiment does not fail, the repub party platform obviously is built upon fallacies.

I challenge the repubs to let this experiment proceed! They had 8 years of bush and look where that got us. Now let's have 8 years of Obama. And compare the results!

user-pic

And it only took 6 weeks!

user-pic

Who wants the fragile American economy to fail?
1. Osama bin Laden.
2. The Grand Ayatollah of the Republican Party, Rush Limbaugh.

user-pic

Yeah! That's it! That's the ticket! Only the enemies of Ameria want Obama to fail!

user-pic

Right after Pence said I listened to Rush say it a week ago I would have followed up asking was it right before or right after the Barack the Magic N song.

user-pic

Consider the source. This is from a guy who said that Baghdad after The Surge was as safe as an Indiana farmer's market.

user-pic

So they will muddy the argument now that they are stuck with it.

Can anyone imagine a dem getting away with this talk if they had made the statement against bush, for ex.?

There is something very weird going on that congress members are openly allowed by the media and other members to say this stuff without any retribution.

This is not a speech issue.

It borders on a call for the overthrow of the government.
And don't think for a second that the wing-nuts out there don't see it for exactly that.

Because these entrenched repigs represent districts that worship guns and only white men you can expect this talk to get worse as it becomes a direct appeal to their darkest beliefs.

This is scary stuff and I am going on record that I see extreme violence as the inevitable outcome if it is not called for what it is and stopped.

user-pic

The other (much more likely) possibility is that we are watching the Republican party commit suicide right in front of our eyes. The have a fatal cancer within the party and it's name is zealotry.

That whole Rush collecting the balls of the party leadership embarrassment proves the zealotry has metastasized beyond simply cutting it out. Their case is terminal, and needs to be.

user-pic

Forget Bootilicious. The GOP is headed toward Rumpiliciousness.

user-pic

These guys just keep digging every time a reporter hands them a shovel. What are they going to say when the policies succeed? They are spending all this time claiming the want them to fail and they WILL fail. They are leaving themselves no back door. Just once I wish a reporter would ask them, "If they do succeed, will that cause you to have some introspection and rethink your political philosophy?"

user-pic

Pence is the fool that went on a "walking tour" of the Shorja market in Bagdad in April 2007 and returned to say that it was just "like a normal outdoor market in Indiana in the summertime." Not the sharpest pencil in the box.

user-pic

Cannibalism: Not pretty.

user-pic

Okay, here's my visual...

Republican leaders standing in front of a curtain at the castle in the land of OZ, listening to a loudspeaker repeating the words "Obey the great and marvelous wizard", over and over again....

Behind the curtain... Rush Limbaugh, his jester's hat on top of his head, dancing a jig... on top of a 100 million dollar pile of coins...

Too bad the scene is real...

user-pic

Three years from Pence (and Rush) will be arguing that President Obama had nothing to do with the prosperity that will be obvious by then.

user-pic

Rush is claiming that wanting Obama's policies to fail isn't the same as wanting America to fail, and apparently, some Republicans are starting to buy that argument.

But it doesn't make sense. It might be reasonable for a conservative to argue that they *hope Obama's policies won't pass.* A conservative could reasonably desire that Obama's policies will fail to become law, and that instead, conservative policies will become law. Given the current environment in Washington, that's not likely to happen, but a committed ideological conservative could honestly say that they wish the best for average Americans by hoping that Obama's policies won't pass in the first place.

But what Rush is saying is that he hopes that Obama's policies, *having passed*, will fail to achieve their stated outcomes. That means he hopes the economy will tank in the wake of Obama's policies, leading to widespread suffering on the part of average Americans. In other words, it's not just that Rush believes Obama's policies won't work, but he *hopes* they won't work. He wishes ill to America.

This gets the very concept of political ideology bass-ackward. Supposedly, one arrives at a conservative ideology because they believe that conservative principles will have the best results in terms of economic stability and overall happiness for the people.

In this case, it seems that Limbaugh (and his Republican cronies) are committed to a certain set of principles *for their own sake.* Even if more liberal policies have better outcomes, Rush doesn't support them - he wants them to fail simply for the sake of having them fail.

This isn't just stupid, it's irrational.

user-pic

"In other words, it's not just that Rush believes Obama's policies won't work, but he *hopes* they won't work."

That concisely identifies the essence of their position. Well stated.

user-pic

Wow. That's awesome.

It's like if you and I are trying to fix a car. We disagree on what course of action will work. You finally say "OK, we'll do it your way but I want your way to fail so we can do it my way."

What's our goal? To fix the car or to be right? If the former -- which common sense would say is the correct answer -- you shouldn't hope that my way fails, but be happy that you have an alternate fix should mine not work. Hoping you can institute your solution means that you're more interested in being the one to put a fix in place than actually fixing the car.

user-pic

Yes. What your analogy highlights is that they are not afraid Obama's policies will fail. They are afraid they will succeed.

user-pic

What's really going to be fun is watching Republicans trying to explain what Obama policy failure but economy success looks like. How will they clearly explain what that distinction is? How could the two realities ever be separated? Dumb-asses.

user-pic

After these emotionally retarded sorts give their reactionary response to what they conjure the Presidents position to be and I get a good laugh, I sometimes have a brief wave of depression. There are so many of these complete buffoons in office impeding the adult business of the country...it's really sad.

user-pic

Has anyone else noticed that Rush speaks as if were a "King"? He pontificates in a one-way media, using public airwaves (Fairness Doctrine anyone?) to speak to his "court" of followers. He has never held an elected position of leadership - apparently anointed "King" by his "gang" of die hard Konservative listeners. Leave them to it, I say. But keep a close eye on them for the unhinged wingnut to inevitably surface.

user-pic

Another Republican who boasts of having savored the flavor of Tubby's anal cyst!
Maybe he'll accompany Tubby to the Dominican Republic and clean him up after he's done employing one of the local prostitutes. I'll bet Tubby needs a hand reaching down there with that larded gut in the way..

user-pic

Two things strike me. First, this is the crowd, who along with Bush, declared that they didn't have to pay any attention to facts on the ground. They could create their own version of reality by spinning things their way loudly and constantly.
Second, I remember Norquist and other Republicans plotting openly to run up the deficit so that there would be no money left for anything the Democrats wanted. I can't find that link - can anyone else?

user-pic

Yep, I heard the same thing and that was the gameplan under the b-movie actor. Norquist wanted to shrink the government so much so as to drown it in a bathtub as well.

user-pic

What a maroon. His way has failed--not once but many times. So now he wants the other way to fail. What's left? Well, since, these guys believe in uncontrolled births and unrestricted guns, they obviously believe in anarchy and roving bands of murdering Jesus-lovers.

user-pic

These guys are getting harder and harder to see in the rearview mirror. I don't think there's even going to be anyone waving to them from the back seat. Shoot, buses aren't even going to stop for them. Just leave them back there wandering around in a dust storm trying to find a direction. We've got better things to do and places to go. Bye bye GOPpers. Try to stay off the middle of the road or you'll get run over.

user-pic

What Rush really means is, "Listen to my show more!"

It is interesting that the Repo says he listens to the show in real time.

But there is a problem in logic for both of them. If you believe that X will in fact fail (what he says as quoted) then you don't WANT X to fail, wants and beliefs are not the same.

"X will fail so therefore I want X to fail"
"I want X to fail so therefore X will fail"

Neither one holds up to even simple review. The second one comes close if the speaker has the power to undermine X, once X has been implemented (eg the Recovery Bill) -- that is, one takes action to effect the failure either in words or deeds.

So should we be looking for Republicans to commit sedition and treason now?

user-pic

addendum - "we want those policies to fail" -- Pence

If the policies succeed, America will be better off, and Pence's belief will have proven false.

What Pence probably meant factually was that he didn't want to see the policies even tried, he'd want the bills to not be passed and become law. What he meant actually was something like, "I feel so impotent and I'm letting you know!"

Pence can't tell the difference between smart government and big government. I think this might apply to many Repos. You can imagine why they have a problem with this notion...
