Lieberman: I Never Meant To Say Obama Doesn't Put Country First

Joe Lieberman is now doing something that might have seemed odd last summer: Singing the praises of Barack Obama.

In an interview with the Associated Press, examining how he has worked to repair his breach with Democratic Party, Lieberman said that Obama has shown "great leadership": "Bottom line: I think Barack Obama, president of the United States, is off to a very good start."

Lieberman still stands on principle about his support for John McCain, and his constant attacks against Obama and the Dems. "When I said those things not only did I believe them, but I believe looking at the records of the two people then, they were right," Lieberman said.

On the other hand, he says he never meant to suggest that Barack Obama doesn't put his country first -- but he does say his remarks were "too subject" to that interpretation and he wishes he'd said it differently.

So what might explain Lieberman's turnaround? It probably has a lot to do with the White House's help in him keeping his chairmanship. "President Obama played a very important role, he was very gracious," said Lieberman. "That obviously sealed the deal and I appreciated it a lot."

Fuck you Joe.

user-pic

Yeah, I'd say that pretty much sums it up.

user-pic

I'm glad your comment is at the top of the list. It fully deserves to be there. Not a word less.

user-pic

I strongly agree. I don't want to plagiarize, but I would like to respectfully join in Acewrap's comment personally, and hope nobody minds:

Fuck you Joe

user-pic

Fuck You Joe!

user-pic

THANK YOU. Exactly.

user-pic

Ace,

are you the guy who yelled "Fuck you, Cheney" when he was down there checking Katrina?

Either way, I'm sure its the same sentiment. :)

user-pic

You've put it perfectly. Thanks Acewrap!

user-pic

What a tool. As a CT resident who voted for Ned Lamont twice, I am SO ready to sign on to a campaign for a primary challenger. I know I have to wait. But that's OK. I'll still be here, Joe, waitin' to take you DOWN.

user-pic

You stay with that important thought, junkmailqueen. We're with you.

user-pic

So, is someone else going to run for the CFL nomination? Because last I checked he wasn't a Democrat.

user-pic

Hah! Wouldn't it be a hoot if even the "Connecticut for Lieberman" party voted Lieberman down?

user-pic

Or, what Acewrap said.

user-pic

So, in other words, Lieberman stands for nothing except Lieberman. I really can't stand this creep, but if he votes the right way, regardless of why, Obama probably did the right thing.

user-pic

When it comes down to it Obama made the right decision. We wanted his head, Obama wanted his vote. That's why he is President.

user-pic

"wanted"? I'd say it's still pretty much present tense on that verb.

user-pic

Yeah, theone, what you said. Dammit!

user-pic

But has he got his vote yet? Lieberman's making nice in the press, but how exactly did he vote on the stimulus package? Hmm? Has he come out in support of even one of Obama's programs?

user-pic

Sounds a lot like Michael Steele's "sometimes what you say comes out different from what you're thinking" apology to Rush.

user-pic

This guy is nothing more than a shameful, two-faced hypocrite. He has no political morals whatsoever and hopefully the CT voters will not allow him to continue his shenanigans when he's up for reelection.

user-pic

Connecticut needs new blood in both Senate seats and the Governor's office. It's a atate full of dead wood. Between Dodd's Iraq War vote, his performance on the Senate Banking Committee, and this quote (Dodd: "I don't think of Joe as the independent, I really think of Joe as a Democrat" - AP) I'm done with the guy. The nation HATES the clubby BS of the Senate and these clowns are doing everything they can to embrace it. I'd like to break the 'cooling saucer' over their fat heads.

And AP, why the hell would you include this this quote in a story: "Do I think it is more principle or politics?" said Quinnipiac University Poll director Doug Schwartz of Lieberman's moves. "It is a tough question." Why not interview a Magic 8-Ball next time and save yourself the phone call?

user-pic

It's too bad Joe never bothered to actually register himself as a member of the Connecticut for Lieberman Party. If he got primaried in that party, that would just make my day.

Oh well. I hear the polls are very bad for him, so we won't have to put up with him much longer.

user-pic

Only 4 more freaking years, unfortunately. However, bottom line obama did the right thing for his vote.

user-pic

True that. But once Franken gets seated, Lieberman becomes that much weaker. And if Democrats pick up another Senate seat in 2010 (or if Specter or one of the two ladies from Maine jump ship), he'll be irrelevant. So for these next four years, I'll just ignore Lieberman and content myself with having Obama in the White House.

Of course, I don't live in Connecticut, so I'm sure I have a much easier time pretending Lieberman doesn't exist. My condolences to CT Voter.

user-pic

Yep, actually maybe after the election in two years traitor joe will be truly irrelevant. The only way he would be partially irrelevant now is if all three "moderate" republicans bolt and franken get's seated. It would still be close though. Another shelacking in 2010 by the dems and he can then ride out his last two years in obscurity and retire in 2012.

user-pic

Political stunt?

user-pic

Why not just say he got caught up in the campaign for his good friend who he still believes would have been a good President?

Of course that shows his terrible judgment right there, as can you imagine McCain/Palin in the White House and the Cabinet they would have put together. Of course Lieberman would have probably been Secretary of State, which of course is the real reason he was so vehement in his backing of Sen. McCain.

Four more years is right. Say goodnight, Joe.

user-pic

You hush that kind of talk! McCain/Palin in the White House and Lieberman SOS! Ye Gads man, that is UNMENTIONABLE. Now I have to go outside and scream. ;)

user-pic

Politicans have a bad name? Go figure!!!!

user-pic

What a cu*t.

user-pic

Joe should go and can take Dodd with him. CT elect some new Dems back to the senate.

It will not hurt if they were interesting as well.

user-pic

Dodd wanted to be VEEP as I heard. Supposedly was testy over not being picked. I don't know enough to have much against the guy, but I still was a bit surprised he took himself so seriously.

user-pic

If Lieberman didn't like Obama as President he could have sat on the sidelines and backed nobody. Instead, he became actively involved in McCain's campaign, supporting him and criticizing Obama. This is why he should be ostracized.

This also enabled him to get more face time on TV, something he loves to do. I remember the many times Bush came out on the White House veranda for an announcement and just behind Bush there was Lieberman. Even after the Stimulus Package passed, there he was, just behind Harry Reid as Reid made the announcement on TV.

I always wonder, and I'm amazed, at how often he's able to pull these cameo appearances off.

user-pic

Remember Wood Allen's movie, "Zelig"?

user-pic

Yep, Zelig and Forrest Gump.

user-pic

Not to mention The Sidler from that Seinfeld episode, the guy who also appeared in front of the boss when a project was getting praised, and was nowhere to be seen when it flopped.

user-pic

Was Zelig a whore?

user-pic

Did you catch it, when Obama wanted him to stay in the caucus, mollify the swine, and Reid went along with a meeting agreeing to tolerate his key chairmanship, after which they were to be no questions? But Traitor Joe came dancing out in front of the cameras anyway, infuriating Reid by basking in some masturbatory photo ops.

That pic of him that TPM puts up just makes you wanna punch the screen, don't it?

user-pic

Joe, since you have so much trouble saying what you mean, why don't you shut the hell up?

user-pic

Lieberman pisses all over Democratic voters in CT and Dodd calls it rain. Lowell Weicker was a better Democrat than both of them and he was a Republican.

user-pic

Exactly. We CT Dems said WE DIDN'T WANT HIM, so he ignored the will of the people and ran anyway. God did that make my blood boil. And since we Dems didn't want him, you know he beat Ned Lamont with disaffected GOP votes (they can't mount a statewide campaign for their own candidates for shit). Oh, that and the Greenwich Dems, all of them stockbrokers from Wall Street, who are not Dems at all.

user-pic
he beat Ned Lamont with disaffected GOP votes

Let us not forget the total winning combination, here: disaffected GOP voters + Democratic voters who still believed Joe's bullshit about being a good liberal "who marched with King".

Dear God! We knew Lieberman was toxic. But... Democrats in his own goddamned state?!?

user-pic

Totally anecdotally ... On my commute, I drive from a middle-class community through some of the most affluent towns in the state. During the general election, the Lamont signs were heavy in my own area, but gradually disappeared and were replace by Lieberman signs in the front yards of the mansions the further I got into Wall Street commuter territory. I think -- hope -- that REAL Dems are on to ol' Joe. In fact I'm sure he's toast in his next re-election campaign. In the meantime, I'm planning on working to rid myself of Dodd.

user-pic

Not surprising in the least. In the areas where you would expect solid Republican votes, you saw Lieberman signs.

Remember the name of the actual Republican candidate in that race? Well... I don't. He got zero press and literally a handful of votes, as few or less than any third party candidate might have. The message from the GOP was clear: you R's will vote for Lieberman.

I cannot remember ANY time, anywhere else, where the GOP threw their own candidate who actually was on the ballot under the bus, like that. But one thing's clear: almost every single Republican voter in CT got the message, loud and clear.

So, for all practical purposes, the CFL Party candidate was the de facto Republican Party candidiate. Causing me to ask again: why were the Dem voters in CT who pulled the lever for Lieberman so utterly fucking clueless?

(Sorry... I'm still not over this, obviously... :-)

user-pic

What a Judas!

user-pic

Help me out here. Is Joe Lieberman a lying sack of shit, a complete douche bag, or both? Personally, I think he's both, but while "Lieberman douche" gets ~20,000 hits on Google, and "Lieberman sack of shit" gets ~16,000 hits, "Lieberman douche sack of shit" gets a meager 1,630 hits. Frankly, I'm surprised that "Lieberman douche sack of shit" doesn't get more hits, but that may because people do not consider that Joe Lieberman can be simultaneously a douche bag AND a lying sack of shit, and that they have simply fallen prey to a common logical fallacy (frequently used by Republican politicians and their leader, Rush Limbaugh) known as a "false choice".

Thus continues the long twilight struggle for Truth.

user-pic

Try: Lieberman Judas.

You get 50,100!!!

user-pic

ADad,

hahaahhahha, good one. :)

user-pic

Up to 1680 hits now. Who says one good man can't make a difference!

user-pic

LOL!!!!

user-pic

Fellow Truth enthusiasts:

Interestingly, "Lieberman asswipe" gets 3000 hits, although in fairness to Joe, some of these refer to asswipes associated with Joe, not just to Joe himself. Still, hard to top "Lieberman Judas" and the bit-storm of 50,000 hits.

user-pic

Let's not waste energy reporting on Joe L. Since he craves attention, let's not give it to him.

Unless he performs at the circus, riding upside down on an elephant while sucking it's c*ck; wait, he's already done that.

So, anyway, let's just ignore him.

user-pic

I'm so glad I had already finished my coffee when I read this. Otherwise, it would have been sprayed all over my desk...

user-pic

let us not ever forget that joe puts HIS country first. which country? israel of course.

AIPAC treats joe like a ATM. and he always pays out in spades.

user-pic

with the enormous head that LIEberman has, it must be really easy for rush to get his hand up there and work his mouth.

user-pic

Two-Faced Joe, Traitor to the Democratic Party.

user-pic

Classic backpedal by a hyena. Hopefully it does you no good. Your seat has a dayglo target painted on it, Slimy one.

user-pic

I'm not usually prone to contentless personal attacks, but I just wanted to express my opinion that this man is a gutless, morally bankrupt piece of shit.

That is all.

user-pic

Oh, darn. Did I miss it? Are we all done saying "Fuck you, Joe"? Because I'd really hate to miss my chance to chime in on that!

user-pic

Lieberman definitely puts country first --- that is, Israel.

user-pic

I think Lieberman is a jerk, but would you cast similar aspersions about the dual loyalties of a Roman Catholic politician who opposes this country's laws on abortion or birth control?

My guess is that the answer is no.

user-pic

Rich is right. Can't we just have an ecumenical "Fuck You Joe" without bringing in his faith? I wouldn't want foreigners to think Bush speaks for us, Neocons and their ilk certainly don't speak for all Isreal. Plenty of Israelis don't feel the Israeli right-wing or their American fan-boys are doing the country any good.

user-pic

The man even grovels like a Republican!

user-pic

If Joe wants to show his Dem bona fides, he should offer to become their attack dog.

user-pic

I'd like to see the mail Lieberman gets.

user-pic

I love when he openly admits he has no principles and the game is only about who strokes his ego the nicest.

user-pic

Holy Joe LIEberman....on his way to fooling Connecticut voters for the second time running.

user-pic

Just like an undercover Republican, when you lose, attack the opposition in every way possible. Then when you are exposed, and or the light shines on you, you act like the opposition's view point was the greatest thing on Earth. What a slimey turncoat. This man must be removed A.S.A.P.

user-pic

I was pretty unhappy when I read this. But then I read the comments and all is once again well in this world.

Fuck you, Joe!

user-pic

Is it piling on to say, Lieberman's a putz? If it is, I accept the 15 yard penalty.

user-pic

Not to rehash ancient history, but I still can't get over it...how did this fucking reptile ever end up as Gore's running mate?

user-pic

It had to do with his "saintliness" at the time of clinton's monica episode. From hind-sight, of course, that seems impossible. But there it was!

user-pic

Oooh, you know what? That picture there is the one that is in my dictionary right next to the entry for "weasel".

user-pic

I know it's been said several times now, but let me say it once more: Fuck you Joe, you fucking douche.

user-pic

Yep, I gotta agree... it's short, sweet and to the point:

Fuck you, Joe.

user-pic

What an ass-kisser. Motherfuck you, Joe.

user-pic

It is wonderful to understand that JL is well understood by others. I would like to suggest that this energy be channeled into a Stop Lieberman effort. There is a 4 yr period to work in, and some "shedding the light" on his record, affiliations and positions may end up being a big part of the effort. Plus, hitting him where it hurts (in the spotlight) will bring out a response and allow us to see where his backing and leverage is coming from. The sad fact is he did get (re)elected against a candidate who was "on the charts."
