Obama Announcing New Strategy Against Al-Qaeda In Afghanistan
President Obama will be rolling out the new strategy for Afghanistan and Pakistan today, involving the deployment of another 4,000 military advisers to Afghanistan to help train the Afghan army, and an increase in spending of 60 percent from the current $2 billion per month rate. New benchmarks will also be imposed on the Afghan government, with Obama reportedly telling Congressional leaders: "The era of the blank check is over."
Obama's Day Ahead
President Obama will be speaking from the Eisenhower Executive Office Building at 9:25 a.m. ET, delivering remarks about the new strategy for Afghanistan and Pakistan. At 10:25 a.m., he will speak at the installation ceremony of Attorney General Eric Holder at George Washington University. At 12 p.m. ET, he will meet with a group of leaders from financial institutions. At 6 p.m., he will depart from the White House, headed for Camp David.
Biden's Day Ahead -- Travel to Latin America
Joe Biden is traveling to Latin America today and over the next few days, where he will visit Chile and Costa Rica to consult with Latin American leaders regarding the upcoming Summit of the Americas in mid-April.
NYT: Financial Reform Battle Lies Ahead
The New York Times says that the Obama administration has a long road ahead of it in implementing Tim Geithner's financial reform proposals. Industry groups are already mobilizing to block new restrictions and win new protections -- and there is likely to be a battle on the government side, as well, as different regulatory agencies jockey for position under a new regulatory regime.
Paul Ryan Flips On Bonus Tax Vote
Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) told the Politico and C-Span that he has changed his mind on his vote for the bonus tax, saying that it was brought to the floor in a rush and he did not know that some legal scholars believe it to be unconstitutional: "Now, that I know -- which I didn't at the time -- that this is unconstitutional, I wouldn't have voted the same way."
DSCC Donates Madoff Money To Relief For Victims
The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has announced that they have gotten rid of $100,000 in contributions from Bernie Madoff. The money was sent to Irving Picard, the trustee appointed to liquidate Madoff's assets and process claims from Madoff's victims.
Louisiana Sec. of State Still Weighing GOP Primary Against Vitter
Louisiana Secretary of State Jay Dardenne (R) told reporters earlier this week that he is still considering a challenge to Sen. David Vitter in the Republican primary: "I have not decided to run, nor have I ruled out the possibility that I may run." Dardenne said that Vitter's recent incident at an airport, involving a door alarm and a reportedly angry exchange with an airport employee, has prompted more calls from supporters to get in the race.
Conservative Group Has New Ad Against Obama Health Plan
A new group called Conservatives for Patients' Rights is rolling out this new ad against President Obama's health plan, slated to air on CNN and Fox News:
The ad likens the health plan to the AIG bonuses: "Isn't it amazing folks in Congress were shocked the plan THEY passed allowed those huge bonuses for AIG?" says group chairman Rick Scott, a former healthcare executive. "Now some in Congress want to raise taxes and spend $634 billion for the President's healthcare overhaul -- without even seeing all the details of his plan. They just never seem to learn."

Interesting...a lot of us thought it was unconstitutional the second we heard about it...that should've at least generated a few questions before voting.

Sending thousands of "advisers" to prop up a puppet government in Asia? Hmm, haven't we (if we're old enough, anyway) heard that one before?

Unfortunately.

Alright, what do you propose?
March 27, 2009 10:51 AM | Reply | Permalink
Three words: Get out. NOW.
This "chasing al Qaeda" business is just as bogus as Kennedy's rationales for getting us bogged down in Vietnam (9and Johnson's for doubling down on his mistake). We are not and never will be powerful enough to deny them every square mile of the planet as potential bases; the focus should be on international law enforcement cooperation to head off attacks, not on useless and even counterproductive use of the military against a fundamentally non-military problem. Oh, and an added "bonus" of this "strategy" is the continued destabilization of Pakistan- a nuclear power. Great idea, that.

They're not "advisors" meat. They're combat troops.

They're CALLING them "military advisors". (It's right there in the story, dope.) That's EXACTLY the same Orwellian term Kennedy used in Vietnam.

Just read the article cited, "advisors" is nowhere to be found...

Direct quote from today's WaPo story on Afghanistan: "Obama said he will send at least 4,000 more this fall to serve as trainers and advisers [emphasis mine] to an Afghan army expected to double in size over the next two years."

It's really semantics, but Kennedy was trying to pretend our guys weren't fighting, no one should be under that illusion in this sittuation.
P.S. AP, Bloomberg and CNN don't mention advisors, I think it's the author's term, not the Administrations.

Apparently they are going to help train the afghan army. Training the afghan army means advisors. It really is immaterial, because there are not enough troops in any event to do shit. Maybe the solution is to get out and just go in periodically with special forces to kill taliban and al queda when they set up shop or bomb the shit out of their camps.

There's the "trainers" plus the 17,000 combat troops plus the ones already there. Steve was trying to draw some dumbass parallel to Obama sending advisors = Vietnam.
March 27, 2009 11:32 AM | Reply | Permalink
The parallel is not exact, true, but the level and type of doubletalk about what's going on and what can really be accomplished are disquietingly familiar.

Steve,
maybe Obama will eventually learn that Afghanistan is where armies go to die.

Unfortunately, there are not enough troops to rectify the situation, nor probably would there be enough troops if we put the whole freaking standing army in afghanistan. The country is huge and is in the stone age. We don't have to bomb it into the stone age, it's already there.
I really don't know what we can do about afghanistan, nor do I think anybody does. It's a complete clusterf*ck thanks to the king and not enough troops in the first place to kill and capture the taliban leadership and the al queda leadership. What should have been done was launch with overwhelming force in 2001, kill and bomb the shit out of the enemy and get the f*ck out in 2002. Now we are stuck there for years. Brilliant strategy, just f'n brilliant.

There is no rational reason for us to retain out presence there for even one day more.
NO foreign power has EVER been able to control Afghanistan. Not even Alexander the Great managed more than a brief and illusory degree of control, and that only after the hardest and costliest fighting of all his campaigns.

SFCW,
from today's TPM;
"The 4,000 military trainers that Obama is sending to Afghanistan will come from 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. All of the troops he is dispatching to Afghanistan, including the combat troops, will be there by fall.
Obama's plan does not send in more combat troops, for now. Military commanders say they think more such forces will be needed."
On the other hand, if these "trainers" get within 100 yards of combat, which is very likely, they will become combat troops.

Every NCO in the Army (and most Officers and some soldiers) is a "trainer." 4000 "trainers" from the 82nd (one of which is a close friend of mine) will be imbedded with the Afghan units and fighting along side them.

Is this the Ryan who is supposedly putting together the "details" of the Repo "budget" proposal?
I found it interesting that he flipped on the bonuses because the bill MIGHT be unconstitutional. What a blow in the wind mentality he must have...
