Obama Picks Sebelius For Health And Human Services
President Obama has reportedly selected Governor Kathleen Sebelius (D-KS) to be his Secretary of Health and Human Services, and will officially announce the pick on Monday. Sebelius' move to the cabinet would seem to take her out of the running for the 2010 Senate race, for which some had hoped she could be first Democrat to win a Senate seat from Kansas since 1932.
Limbaugh Reaffirms It -- He Wants Obama To Fail, And America To Succeed
Rush Limbaugh accepted his "Defender of the Constitution Award" at CPAC last night, reaffirming that he wants President Obama's policies to fail. "You can't say, Mr. Limbaugh, that you want the President to fail because that's like saying you want the country to fail," Limbaugh said rhetorically. "It's the opposite. I want the country to survive. I want the country to succeed," he added, as the crowd cheered.
Cantor Distances Himself From Limbaugh, Says GOP Doesn't Want Obama To Fail
Appearing on This Week, House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA) rejected the rhetoric of Rush Limbaugh, that Republicans want Obama to fail:
STEPHANOPOULOS: So the Rush Limbaugh approach of hoping the president fails is not the Eric Cantor , House Republican approach?
CANTOR: George, absolutely not. And I don't -- I don't think anyone wants anything to fail right now. We have such challenges.
What we need to do is we need to put forth solutions to the problems that real families are facing today. And our common-sense, conservative principles of limited government, and the belief in free markets, and the belief that really opportunity can only be created by the private sector are going to undergird our proposals going forward.
Rahm: Limbaugh "The Intellectual Force And Energy" Of GOP
Appearing on Face The Nation, Rahm Emanuel moved to further tie the Republican Party to Rush Limbaugh, declaring him to be "the intellectual force and energy behind the Republican Party." Of Limbaugh's rhetoric about failure, Rahm said: "He said it, and I compliment him on his honesty. But that's their philosophy that's enunciated by Rush Limbaugh and I think that's the wrong philosophy for America."
Orszag: Deficit Will Go Down In Near Future
Appearing on This Week, White House Budget Director Peter Orszag reaffirmed the White House's projections that they can cut the deficit in half in the next few years, as the economy recovers and the Bush tax cuts expire. "We've got both spending constraints and additional revenue, as the economy recovers," Orszag explained. "That's where a lot of the deficit reduction comes from."
Gates: Obama 'More Analytical' Than Bush
Appearing on Meet The Press, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates compared President Obama to his previous boss, George W. Bush: "I think that probably President Obama is somewhat more analytical. And he makes sure he hears from everybody in the room on an issue. And if they don't speak up, he calls on them." He also said it is "fairly remote" that the current plan for withdrawal from Iraq would change.
Mullen Expresses Confidence In Obama, Withdrawal Plan
Appearing today on Fox News Sunday, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Mike Mullen said that the current timeline to withdraw from Iraq is acceptable, and expressed his confidence in President Obama: "He clearly has sought my advice. I feel very comfortable that as a senior military officer and adviser to the president that he is giving me the time and the opportunity to advise him accordingly."
Pawlenty: Coleman Has 'Plausible' Chance
In an interview with The Hill, Governor Tim Pawlenty (R-MN) said of the disputed Senate race in his home state: "Norm has a plausible chance, a decent chance of winning this thing. He has raised irregularities that rise to the level of legal issues, legitimate legal issues, that could change the result."

Well, considering that the current crisis has forced a doubling (or more?) of the deficit, reducing it to the previous merely humongous levels shouldn't be that hard.

The problem is that they've assumed pretty optimistic growth numbers for the economy. Very optimistic. The administration puts the following growth numbers for the US economy into their model:
1.2% this year
3.2% next year
a rip-snorting 4% clip after that
You kidding me? Not gonna happen! This will turn out to be the biggest economic downturn since the Great Depression (but not bigger). It will not be over this year, or next. This is global. Afghanistan is gonna get worse before it gets better. Factories AROUND THE WORLD are going idle. Banks AROUND THE WORLD are collapsing, and the financial systems have to be rebuilt. These situations will take YEARS to resolve.
The deficit numbers are based on a very rosy, steady-as-she-goes scenario. But, new problems will come up elsewhere; nothing is ever as simple as we plan it. The recovery will be a long way off, and, at first, will be uneven. We should all be thrilled if the US growth equals half those amounts listed above.
By necessity, the deficit will remain massive for a number of years.
The long term implications of such a huge deficit aren't good. But then, the long term implications of not running a deficit of this size to handle the problems Obama inherited are even worse. Rock and hard place.

Suddenly the GOP is beside itself over things that could be construed as voting irregularities?
Cool!
Every time one of them speaks "seriously" anymore, it's hysterically funny.

Uh oh, Cantor has committed the unpardonable sin of appearing to criticize El Rushbo, and I foresee a session in the woodshed ahead for Eric. In fact, I think I can hear him squealing "Please sir, may I have another?" already.

re: Eric Cantor (R-"I so want to be George Allen") quote: "And our common-sense, conservative principles of limited government..."
A line taken *directly* from former Senator George Macacca Allen, (R-Racist). Allen spoke those exact words.
Here is a clue, Eric: "Common sense" tells most "real" Americans that the Republican policies utterly failed. Er go, you have no common sense.

Look at CPAC, the republicans are paranoid, crazy, jealous, out of touch, no solutions, one trick pony lunatics. If I was a republican with this cast of asinine characters I would head for the hills. At CAPAC they didn’t offer up ANY new ideas about the economy, energy, healthcare and education. These same nut case republican got their tin foil hats in tizzy when they thought the democrats wanted us lose in Iraq but cheer Limbaugh who wants Obama to fail

You know, several columnists criticized Obama for mentioning Rush's name in that meeting with Repubs and Dems. One made the point that it caused the GOP to fall in line and give zero votes for the stimulus. Kind of like an "in your face" to Obama. Buuuut, it looks like Obama's comments, Rahm and those commercials may effectively tie ALL Republicans to the woman bashing, drug addicted, immigrant hating, racist, liar, wants-Obama-to-fail Rush Limbaugh. Now so-called "respectable" GOPers will try to distance themselves from Rush, have Rush spank them on the radio and then they will come back begging for forgiveness. I am loving this, it's better than my soaps.

I really like gates. Anybody else notice that he seems to be all smiles lately. I don't remember him ever smiling under the king. He was almost giddy walking into the joint session on Tuesday. Smart move on obama's part keeping him on. I think that he will do an excellent job and he has been doing a good job thus far.

If Bluebell is all smiles, that means she's convinced that the world will end next week . . . after innocent children are all murdered by a band of crazed chimps who destroy the environment, burn the homeless for entertainment and start a dozen new wars.
Bluebell prays for misery and disappointment every day. It gives her a reason to keep that black cloud of doom running full steam!

Agree about Gates. He's doing a good job and I think he's loyal to Obama and has faith in him as commander in chief. Not so much with Patreus and Mullen. I hope the president asks them to spend more time with their families.

Yep, and the military contractors can't stand him and wanted him to go. Gates also wants to can the f-22 and other ridiculously expensive and wasteful weapons programs. They were pissed that he was staying on. That's a good thing. Also, he really cares about the troops, unlike dumbsfeld.
It really is surprising that the king picked him, because he totally was not like the rest of the crooks that were in his administration. He is probably more in on board with obama than he ever was with the king.

Absolutely correct. Gates wants to do the right thing and the brass knows that. I appreciate that Obama knew the value of Gates to the people he serves (the military). I think Gates and Obama make a great team. Let's hope they end these godawful wars as soon as they can.

Limbaugh either continues to rant and marginalizes himself or lessens his bluster, moderates himself and beings the majority of dittoheads with him. It's really a win-win for the country.
You know Rush hates the scrutiny he's being placed under - he likes ranting and raving to his 14M dittoheads daily without the rest of America tuning in. Now he has to worry that every remark he makes could be captured in the next union ad or end up as the next Democrat talking point. He really tipped his hand when he was outraged that his comments were used against McCain and Republicans during the general. And there is a treasure trove of archived material that could be used against him.
Steele was on with DL Hugley and DL had Steele saying that Rush is nothing more than entertainment and that "Rush Limbaugh isn't the de facto leader of the Republican Party, I'm the de facto leader".
March 1, 2009 2:44 PM | Reply | Permalink
Steele is in fact the nominal leader of the Republican Party, and the sooner he learns that, the better it will go for him.

Yeah, that's right, and forgive me from being pedantic, but the knucklehead literally may not know what "de facto" means. He's the "de jure" leader, approximately meaning nominal as you say. It's not clear that they have a "de facto" leader (Limbaugh? Gingrich? Norquist? Boehner? Cantor?), but if they do, I don't think it's Steele.

More interesting 2010 news from Oklahoma, where Rep. Mary Fallin announced she would run for Governor. That means OK-05 will be an open seat, and while it is a heavily Republican bench, Democrats have a surprisingly strong bench there.

Limbaugh is a loser and fortunately most of the country knows it, so the Democrat's strategy of painting the Republican party as that of Limbaugh is genius. I pity poor Eric Cantor, I wonder how Rush will publicly embarrass him, maybe a little Phil Gingrey treatment...

I guess when you've made hundreds of millions of dollars by manipulating so many naive and ill-informed yet hard working Americans, you can afford for the country to fail even in a time of crisis. Most of his listeners, however, would not be able to endure the consequences of such a failure, and it's pathetic and immoral that this POS would exploit them in that way.

Let's get this straight...the Dixie Chicks remark that they're embarassed to be from the same state as Bush and heads explode from coast-to-coast; Limbaugh announces that he hopes this country falls off a cliff and that millions of people lose their jobs, their homes, their access to healthcare, etc., and THAT's okay?

There was a quick little shot during DeMint's speech at CPAC. It was towards the beginning, and he had just said something derogatory about public schools. There weren't a ton of people in the audience, but the camera showed a crowd reaction. And right there in the middle of the shot: 3 - 4 skinheads. It was really, really weird.
