Pat Toomey To Join With Joe The Plumber, Against EFCA
In yet another sign that former Rep. Pat Toomey (R-PA) is on the verge of challenging Arlen Specter in the 2010 Republican primary -- a rematch of their 51%-49% battle in 2004 -- Greg Sargent reports that Toomey will appearing at rallies in Pennsylvania alongside a top GOP leader: Samuel "Joe The Plumber" Wurzelbacher.
Toomey will be joining Mr. The Plumber at an upcoming rally against the Employee Free Choice Act. In a way, this might seem superfluous, now that Specter has come out against EFCA and effectively sunk it during this Congress. On the other hand, any candidate should go hunting where the ducks are -- and there should be plenty of conservative ducks at a rally like this.

Toomey makes Joe the Plumber horny.

Just add michelle "the lunatic" bachmann to the rallies and you get a trifecta.

I'd say this is good news for Specter. Sure, the base is going to love the fake Plumber, but moderates aren't going to.
And if it doesn't benefit Specter, and Toomey wins, it's going to benefit whoever the Dem is.

Nah, the problem is that many moderate republicans in pa have fled the party. The remaining voting pool is harder right than it used to be. They love rambo, "joe" the non-plumber and lush. Odds are specter won't win the primary.

Well, if Toomey wins the primary, then whoever the Dem is will have some great material to make ads from.
Who's Toomey's economic advisor? Joe the Plumber!
And so on and so forth.

Good points. Another republican bites the dust. Specter is wearing thin on me at this point and we are wasting time with him. I'd rather see him go in 2010 now.

Joe now has full access to all of the privileges and perks that come with membership Toomey's Club for Greed. I actually enjoyed watching Toomey ads when I was working in PA during the 2004 campaign; I was able to involuntarily increase the intensity of my workout when I saw him on the TVs in the Health Club.

How is he as a speaker? I've never heard him.

Joe the Plumber is backing Toomey? Well I'm sold!

Giving full meaning to the party of Hypocrisy, Joe Blow forgot the "buying my own business" bit, failed miserably at being a reporter, not able to pull off the country singer gig, and now wants face time everywhere so he has a better chance of getting laid. Toomey will tell him what to say but Joe's total lack of wisdom behind his attention seeking ego should highlight the republican path to insignificance. When your options are Spectre or Toomey, Joe fits right in as a nominee for the academy award for phony.

Specter needs to respond with an equivalent political celebrity from his own moderate wing (though, at this point, it is more of a finger or two than a whole wing) of the Republican Party, perhaps Meghan McCain. I'd love to see a debate over economics and labor policy between "Joe" the "Plumber" and Meghan McCain, though I fear it would make my brain cry.

Looking ahead, do you think the path chosen by Lieberman (defeatd in primary, switch from D to I, get elected) may in any way apply here?
March 27, 2009 2:59 PM | Reply | Permalink
He can't pull a Lieberman, as PA state law doesn't allow it, but he could run as an independent.

Besides, independents didn't elect Lieberman, it was the Republicans that put him in. Democrats would never do the same for Specter.

Specter is worried and looking at all his options.
This Pittsburgh Post Gazette article says he is testing the waters about making the PA primary open to Independents. That would certainly help him in the primary. Lots of moderate Republicans left the party in the presidential election.

Interestingly, the article quotes both state Sen. Eichelberger and Sen. Mike Folmer.
Both were elected in 2006 after the state's pay raise fiasco and were endorsed/funded by Pat Toomey's Club for Growth.

See what kowtowing to the rightwing gets you Arlen?
I knew it. And I'm sure Spector was promised he'd be spared a primary challenge if we obeyed his puppet masters. But these thugs will gleefully stab you in the back.
Serves the coward right.

Exactly. With Specter's EFCA betrayal, he gets to lose his seat, his soul and his legacy all at once. That's the real trifecta.

Are there polls on how Republicans actually respond to Joe the Plumber?
I think very lowly of the rump GOP base, but I have to think that even they see this guy as a liability rather than a rally point.
March 27, 2009 3:15 PM | Reply | Permalink
Really? They love insanity and lush and rambo and cooter. Why would they find sam the unemployed, I mean "joe the plumber", a liability?
