Poll: Vitter Below 50% For 2010 -- In Both Primary And General Elections

A new Research 2000 poll suggests that Senator David Vitter (R-LA), the staunch social conservative who became bogged down in the D.C. Madam prostitution scandal in 2007, could potentially be vulnerable in 2010.

Vitter is still ahead in the primary and general elections, but in both cases he's scoring below 50% -- and that's before having to go through an actual campaign, where his personal and policy issues could all get dredged up.

In the Republican primary, Vitter attracts 43% of the vote, Secretary of State Jay Dardenne (used here as a stand-in for some reasonably well-known Republican) gets 32%, and porn star Stormy Daniels is at 1%. Louisiana primaries have runoffs, by the way -- so if multiple GOP challengers get in and Vitter were ahead but under 50%-plus-1, he would have to face a second round.

In general-election match-ups against two hypothetical Democratic candidates, Vitter is ahead of Rep. Charlie Melancon, a socially conservative and economically populist Dem, by 48%-41%. Against former Rep. Don Cazayoux, who has a similar political profile as Melancon, it's 48%-39%.

I love it. Stormy is at 1%. She has them right where she wants them. Look out, she will come from behind. Stormy in 2010.

Stormy is a stripper, NOT a porn star (as Eric mistakenly characterized her), thus the likelihood that she will "come from behind" are probably slim. That's why we need to encourage her to stick to her guns and mount a full-frontal assault!

Go Stormy!

Sorry to burst your bubble, but she is a very talented actress with many films to her credit. She is also a director and producer. See below link:

She has more films to her credit than the b-movie actor did and is clearly more talented. Maybe she should run for president in 2016. I bet she might be able to pull it out in the end. She has to take on vitter first and take him from behind and then maybe the presidency. I like her positions as well. Go Stormy!

Don't worry. Her numbers will go up when people see her many excellent positions.

I understand she has a very desirable political profile vis-a-vis Louisiana voters.

We ought start an anti-Vitter ad contest. I'm sure that we'd come up with some good ones. On second thought, maybe we ought to wait until he's got the nomination so the Dems don't go against a prostitution-free candidate.

Why doesn't someone have the cajones to ask this twit what form of "protection" he was using with his hookers? And how much he paid them? And if he doesn't think that preventing pregnancies when people who aren't married have sex is an issue he understands....

Maybe they should ask his wife, since he dragged her up to the podium when he did his mea culpa -- she is definitely fair game. How would she feel if one of his hookers got pregnant. Would she want that baby aborted, or would she prefer that he support the baby and the mother?

All reasonable questions, no?

user-pic

Seeing as "Diaper Dave" was more into acting like a baby than producing one, I suspect the question is moot.

Eric, I don't understand your comment about runoffs. Doesn't Louisiana have a system of (Stormy, please excuse the expression) "all-comers" primaries in which Dems & GOPers alike compete, and where a) somebody gets 50%+ & wins outright or b) the top 2 have a runoff in the general?
