SEIU and Change to Win React to Specter

The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and Change to Win are also vowing to press on with their work on the Employee Free Choice Act despite Sen. Arlen Specter's (R-PA) momentum-killing announcement today that he would oppose the union-organizing bill.

SEIU President Andy Stern says he's "dismayed by those who say they support the democratic process, yet refuse to allow meaningful debate and a democratic vote on critical legislation like the Employee Free Choice Act," while Change to Win takes a more diplomatic approach in responding to Specter. Both groups' statements are after the jump.

From SEIU's Stern:

In the middle of this economic crisis, passing the Employee Free Choice Act is exactly the right thing to do to give workers the chance to level the playing field. Majority Leader Reid said today, and as even Sen. Specter acknowledges, we need strong labor reform. Now more than ever, America's workers need a choice, free from intimidation and harassment, to bargain for job security, better wages and health care. Our President, Vice President and majorities in both houses of Congress share this goal, and we will not stop in our efforts to achieve it.

In an essay Senator Specter recently wrote for the Harvard Law Review, he states that for people like himself, "finding a practical solution is more important than political posturing." That's why we're dismayed by those who say they support the democratic process, yet refuse to allow meaningful debate and a democratic vote on critical legislation like the Employee Free Choice Act.

It's simple: If you support democracy, you should support the right to debate legislation that could improve the lives of millions of working Americans, pump $49 billion into the economy at a time when we desperately need it, and that's supported by the vast majority of the public.

We look forward to working with Sen. Specter and the rest of the Congress to find ways to give workers the free choice to join a union free from intimidation and harassment.

From Change to Win Chair Anna Burger, also Secretary-Treasurer of SEIU:

The Employee Free Choice Act is a vital component to restoring our economy, rebuilding the middle class and renewing the American Dream for America's workers. Allowing workers the choice to join together, free from intimidation and harassment, to bargain for job security, better wages and health care will stimulate our economy and put working families back on the path of prosperity. We will continue to work with Democrats and Republicans, including Sen. Specter, to pass this critical legislation and make our economy work for everyone.

So what happens next? Evan Bayh comes out and tells us labor isn't very centrist and in the interest of moderation Democrats should embrace the Chamber of Commerce? I mean who really needs jobs for constitutents when you have lobbyists filling your pockets?

Andy Stern needs to hire someone a bit more literate to write his press releases:

It's simple:  If you support democracy, you should support the right to debate legislation...

That's exactly what Arlen Specter is supporting -- the Senate's right to debate this legislation. . . . and debate . . . and debate even more . . .

"SEIU President Andy Stern says he's 'dismayed by those who say they support the democratic process, yet refuse to allow meaningful debate and a democratic vote on critical legislation like the Employee Free Choice Act,'"

Hey Andy, if you are such a big cheerleader for the democratic process, why are you running a hostile and undemocratic takeover of UHW-West? Democratic principles would suggest that if a majority (91K of 150K) of union members sign decertification cards declaring they don't want SEIU representation and instead want their democratically elected leaders back by way of the National Union of Healthcare Workers you'd step aside.

Convenient how democracy takes a back seat when Andy Stern knows what's best for union members.

Sí, se puede, Andy!

So management can run a card check campaign to get rid of a union, but the workers can't run one to get a union? Maybe, just maybe, management applies a little pressure when asking for a card signature?

Both sides should have the same organizing power -- that includes union organizing at the work place on paid time.

Just because it can't possibly be said enough:

Fuck you, Arlen, and your good buddy Joe!

Its funny to hear Andy Stern talk about democratic values. I'm a Kaiser employee from California. Andy and his scab staff tried to take over our union and removed the shop stewards that we elected because they dared to actually speak about workers' rights to be represented by the leaders we elected.

Fortunately we have basically told SEIU to shove off and have chosen NUHW as our new union. Lisa Tomasian, one of our shop stewards that Andy tried to replace with scabs describes exactly what happened this weekend on the Daily Kos: http://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/3/22/711746/-My-letter-to-SEIU

Read your link, I think this link gives a more balanced viewpoint;

You mean a friend of Andy Stern's wrote a biased article in favor of SEIU? What a genuine surprise.

But the real telling point is which group would love to have a democratic vote by union members to determine who should represent them? Gee, NUHW would love that and SEIU is doing everything to prevent such a vote.

Its really simple: let the workers vote which union they want to represent them. What is SEIU so afraid of? Why hide behind the NLRB and legal technicalities?

Reid can talk all he wants, but we need a Senate Majority Leader who has guts. Hey, Harry threaten the nuclear option! You guys have an 8 seat majority and act as if you can't do a damn thing! Once Al Franken gets there it will be 9 seats. The Republicans got what they want with 50 frickin' Senators when they threatened to use it!
