Steele: The Supposed Global Warming Is Part Of The Global Cooling Process

Michael Steele has taken the GOP's global-warming denial to a new height: "We are cooling. We are not warming. The warming you see out there, the supposed warming, and I use my finger quotation marks here, is part of the cooling process."

That quote comes from Steele's little-noticed appearance as a guest-host on Bill Bennett's radio show the Friday before last, which was just dug up and posted by Sam Stein.

Steele also continued to make threats against pro-stimulus Republicans, as well. "Those first principles, with respect to how we as Republicans, as conservatives view the economy, view wealth creation, have to be adhered to, they have to be supported," he said. "And those who don't put their reelection in harms way."

This really does show how Steele is the gift that keeps on giving: Even when he's stopped doing media appearances, we get previous ones like this or the GQ interview popping up in the interim.

"The warming...is part of the cooling process."

Wow. Just wow.

user-pic

Also, the GOP losing election after election after election is part of the 'winning' process.

user-pic

You joke but I can totally see them saying:

"The problem of the GOP is that we lost what it means to be Republican. We are getting rid of those that weakened our political message. Returning to our core beliefs strengthens our party. We will once again rise stronger than ever before."

user-pic

Come to think of it, (and as hunter notes below) I believe they were saying pretty much exactly that after the last election.

Damn, it's hard to ridicule these guys -- they do such a good job of making themselves ridiculous with no help whatsoever!

user-pic

Honest to God, I got an email from a Republican friend of mine (after I had gently ribbed him about his camping trip in the political wilderness) who said:

"this short excursion into the wilderness will be good for the GOP. We've been here before after Goldwater. I understand that sometimes you need a Jimmy Carter to get a Ronald Reagan."

user-pic

The problem is your friend probably doesn't know the true facts about the b-movie actor. At this point it is all this fantastical myth being promoted by republicans. I find it telling that in the 90's the b-movie actor was ranked in the the lower 1/2 of us presidents and boom after building up the myth for ten years, now he is in the top 10? WTF. These b-movie actor fans really don't have a clue.

If warming is part of the cooling process, does that mean I should put my beer in the oven or should I put the pizza in the freezer? It's all so confusing.

"We are cooling. We are not warming. The warming you see out there, the supposed warming, and I use my fingers as quotation marks, is part of the cooling process. Greenland, which is covered in ice, it was once called Greenland for a reason, right? Iceland, which is now green. Oh I love this. Like we know what this planet is all about. How long have we been here? How long? Not very long."

He's not really sure what the heck he's talking about, is he? His whole point is using the words that the Norse called places and using it to refute what millions of data points are telling us.

user-pic

Erik the Red named it Greenland because he wanted to attract settlers to its forbidding shores. Although it probably was warmer (and greener) in the 10th century than it is today, like much of the North Atlantic.

Tangentially, one of the best historical novels I've ever read is about Greenland: Jane Smiley's The Greenlanders.

user-pic

Heh heh, even worse. He's using ancient propaganda as current propaganda to refute millions of data points.

I'll check out that book.

user-pic

Clearly Steele never saw Mighty Ducks 2, where this whole Iceland thing was explained as Coach Bombay got ice cream with the enemy.

user-pic
Mid-way through the program, a caller offered words up support for the embattled RNC chair. "Don't let them shut you up," the voice said.

Steele replied: "Nope, nope. That ain't happening."

No, please don't let them shut you up. Steele, you are just too entertaining!

user-pic

This guy is pure gold! I'm founding a "Keep Steele!" PAC, who's in?

user-pic

I'm totally in. How much do I have to donate to get a t-shirt?

user-pic

I'm on board too. Can the logo have something to do with shooting fish in a barrel?

user-pic

I wish I could laugh.

This guy personifies how Republicans glorify anti-intellectualism (also known by its earlier name, "stupidity"). What more can we expect, sadly, from a group of people who think it's less important to have real ideas and strategies, and more so to know whether or not you'd feel comfortable having a beer with their candidates.

user-pic

Well you see, the warming causes the polar ice caps to melt, flooding more land, and when most of the land is under water the sun's rays will reflect off the surface of the water bouncing off into space causing the earth to cool rapidly, and the water will freeze and we have a new ice age.

user-pic

Man, you are all over that! Do you do consulting work for Steele? :-)

user-pic

global warming can lead to global cooling. all the fresh water that is melting will disrupt the ph levels of the oceans and disrupt currents causing colder (ice age!) temperatures.

it's happened before...

but steele is wrong if he thinks that warming is a part of an ongoing cooling process.

user-pic

1. It's salinity disruption, not pH.

2. It did not result in global cooling, but only localized cooling in Western Europe, which depends on the Gulf Stream for its comparative warmth.

3. There is a real risk if it happening again if large amounts of freshwater ice in Greenland melt and the water is dumped into the North Atlantic.

Remember, London is at 51 degrees 32 minutes north latitude, which puts it north of any place on the continental US and most of settled Canada.

user-pic

The Greenland/Iceland name thing? Proof of the difficulty of science? Stake the fate of the world on your not being able to understand the history of some ironically named countries? His transport policy is based on people driving on parkways but parking on driveways.

Proof he can't even figure out the internet and is not a credible source for anything besides humour.

http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/1965/shouldnt-greenland-be-known-as-iceland-and-vice-versa
(stole driveway/parkway analogy from here too)

I wonder if a Steele administration would support initiatives to increase CO2 production, to help stave off more cooling.

user-pic

The consensus is that man has no impact on climate. This is a 2000 year old consensus.

For many centuries man thought the Earth was the center of the Universe.

It will take time for this consensus to be overturned despite the evidence.

This man is being propped up as a bufoon and the old southern republican will be happy to watch him fall.

Don't blame Steele, pity him.

user-pic

Yeah and my fucking cat's breath smells like cat food

user-pic

EARTH TO STEELE: Not me Baby, I'm hotter than a Ann Coulter look-a-like at a CPAC convention!

user-pic

Oh, its global cooling, not warming. Well that's alright then. We should keep doing what we're doing because, hey, what could possibly go wrong if the world gets cooler? Whew. For a moment there I thought we had a problem.

user-pic

About that 2000 year old consensus: NO!

Ever heard the great American 19th century truism that "rain follows the plow"? Thanks to that inspired bit--premised upon the 19th and early 20th century notion that man MUST re-make the environment to 'redeem' it from 'savagery'--we harvested the Dust Bowl.

Check out Henry Nash Smith, Virgin Land and Leo Marx, Machine in the Garden for the background . . .

user-pic

I'm taking bets on how much time passes before Steele issues yet another mea culpa and reverses course on this statement.

user-pic

He uses his fingers as quotation marks? He's an even bigger tool than I thought!

user-pic

The unintentional comedy scale with this guy is off the charts. I love it.

user-pic

It's just like a sign I used to have on my (Photo) DarkRoom Door: "When the door is shut don't open it - That lets all the dark out!"

user-pic

They reject common fiscal sense, common social sense, and plain old common sense.

Why wouldn't they reject this as well?

If it wasn't so transparent it would be humorous.

user-pic

Oh, all of you laugh at Michael Steele now but this is probably the statement that will save his job at the RNC. In case you don't spend enough time at right-wing sites, global warming is the biggest hoax ever perpetrated, the world is actually entering a cooling period and only God can change the climate. Man has nothing to do with it.

Michael is mainlining to the base here. It's really smart politics for him to be stupid in the GOP these days, which says something both about him and the party.

user-pic

I'm not sure you can get more stupid than Michael Steele. Remember he made up the story about the angry crowd throwing Oreos at him that Steve Gilliard (requiescat in pace) so brilliantly debunked?

I hope he lasts a while, and then Katon Dawson can step in it (yes, sic) and bring the real GOP to the fore. He and Mark Sanford are probably giving each other reach-arounds, gleeful at the prospect, but unaware that they'll mutually self-destruct in the end.

user-pic

This whole ridiculous global warming argument from the republicans is a total red herring anyway. Regardless of it's existence or not, while the evidence is irrefutable that there is a huge problem, we should reduce our pollution emissions into the atmosphere anyway for people's health and the health of the environment in general. We can do it in such a manner that it won't impact greatly on costs to consumers. I think consumers would be fine with paying a couple of extra dollars if that a month for cleaner air and a healthier environment.

These guys are so stuck in the 19th century.

user-pic

Er, shouldn't the RNC chair being a guest host on a radio show be considered an in-kind contribution from the broadcaster? I mean, being a guest is one thing, but when you give him the show, that's not just a media appearance.

user-pic

Yo, global cooling is wack, ice ice baby. Word to your mother.

user-pic

Mikey -- if you want to keep you job this is a start, but you have to commit to the conservative line all they way... you have to believe baby!

repeat after me:

1. the earth is only 6,000 years old
2. there WERE WMDs in Iraq!
3. FDR caused the great depression
4. I can see Russia from my House!

come on, you can do it!

user-pic

Maybe the confusion occurs because Steele is just chillin'
