Anti-Gay Rights Group Calls its Marriage Campaign '2M4M'

Now that activist legislators are legislating from their legislatures to legalize gay marriage, activists are turning up the volume on anti-gay marriage rhetoric.

There's just one, ahem, kink.

In an unintentional but hilarious nod to gay sex chatters everywhere, the National Organization for Marriage has dubbed their campaign "2 Million for Marriage". Or 2M4M. Whoops.

For a bit of context, the National Organization for Marriage, founded in 2007, describes itself as a group created "in response to the growing need for an organized opposition to same-sex marriage in state legislatures." To do that, they run an education fund and a political action committee and have spent $1.5 million on this nation-wide ad, which, according to YouTube, has been viewed well over 100,000 times since it was uploaded on April 7 (though it's unclear how many of those viewers are angry or amused or irony-minded liberals).

To their unending credit, gay rights groups are taking a break from the busy work of fending off attacks on gay marriage to enjoy a bit of a chuckle.

Late update: A civil rights-minded person or group seems to have bought the domain http://2m4m.org/

And just in case it's not obvious to everyone, adding the "2" in front implies a male couple, in search of a third. also written mm4m.

user-pic

Thank you. I was having that same feeling of puzzled provencialism I had before Josh finally explained the bathroom foot tapping code thing during the Larry Craig imbroglio.

user-pic

A THREE WAY!

Oh, how hedonistic, how indulgent, how slutty in that Fabulous and tawdry Rocky Horror way!

We never knew.

"It starts with a jump to your left, and then you step to RIIIIGGHTT."

user-pic

The ad and the group are really pitiful and pathetic.

user-pic

I saw it on one of the MSNBC shows. I'm still puzzled by how 2 men or 2 women getting married legally is going to infringe on my rights. Gee, maybe same-gender marriages will eventually make opposite-gender marriages illegal? or unpalatable? or maybe it means the end of the human race, because god knows, we have a real problem with a dwindling human population in this world -- we can't have more relationships that might not produce children, right? Oh, wait, we already have some opposite-sex marriages that don't produce children! Well, then gee, I guess gay marriage infringes on my rights because it goes against all the biblical strictures. But, my neighbor eating barbequed ribs does also! And what about people who cook on Saturdays? That's going against Biblical strictures. (Oh, and what about men who have sex with their wives less than a week after their wives had their period -- a real abomination!).

user-pic

I'm still puzzled by how 2 men or 2 women getting married legally is going to infringe on my rights.

It's quite simple. The act of gays getting married will cause straight men and women to suddenly wake up and realize "Oh my God! I'm actually GAY!". The divorce rate will skyrocket, and human civilization as we know it will end.

The same thing would probably happen if gays were allowed to serve openly in the armed forces.

Don't you understand the powerful magnetic force that gays have on everyone else?

I went to a talk by Barney Frank a few years ago and he said it would hurt straight couples because they'd have to buy a wedding gift for their gay friends.

user-pic

2M4M, Teabagging... What's next "National Tossed Salad Day" to protest all the illegal immigrants farming lettuce.

user-pic

Under the Hindrocket Postulate, an unintentionally homoerotic statement from the National Organization for Marriage was inevitable.

user-pic

Aha! The "Hindrocket Postulate." That explains it. And all the time I was thinking there must be a network of gay moles that had infiltrated right-wing organizations...

user-pic

I'm expecting any minute now for Glenn Beck to start a new segment debunking the Gallup organization. He would call it "Poll Smoking" (c) The Daily Show.

Or maybe he wants to protest cuts in military spending so he will get a bunch of ex-military band people together where they will play rusty trombones.

Yeah, I'm not sure how I know this stuff...

user-pic

And to express opposition to increased government monitoring in agriculture "Help local meatpackers hide the sausage day".

user-pic

I think it's a cry for help.

user-pic

I think you're right.

user-pic

Not to put too fine a point on the headline of this story, but there is no such thing as "gay rights."
The struggle is for equal rights.

It may be there is a mole in the NOM'S ranks. Someone leaked the outtakes from auditions by actors for a role in this TV spot to the Human rights Campaign. Rachel Maddow aired them on MSNBC. They were hilarious! Sure would be interesting to know how HRC gained possession of the auditions by these wannabe actors portraying straight people whose marriages are threatened by "teh gays."

user-pic

Infiltration of some of these nutso groups would definitely seem to be in order...

user-pic

Don, I don't want to shock you, but I think maybe we (not you and me we, me and other gays we) might be disproportionately represented among the creative class in ad agencies, etc. that makes produces these kinds of things and one of us thought it would be amusing to pass these along.

user-pic

The First Amendment protects their right to present speech I disagree with, but when they say that "their freedom will be taken away" I think it presents a level of deception that goes beyond protected speech.

user-pic

I am now breathlessly awaiting the inevitable classified ad SEEKING a local chapter:

"Christian activist seeks local 2M4M......"

:)

user-pic

Like this mock magazine cover? heh

user-pic

About that ad...I think it would have been much more effective if the actors portraying these poor persecuted heterosexuals, instead of reciting their lines while standing in a ramrod-straight mannequin posture, had been hanging from crosses.

The imagery would have much better captured the suffering heteros everywhere have experienced as a result of standing up for their religious beliefs.

user-pic

Good job, first time TPM ever made me lol.

user-pic

I say this without any irony, scorn, or derision, but that new anti-gay group's name is totally gay.

user-pic

Maybe I can convince my wife that if she divorces me, a gay marriage will take our place! Than she won't leave me! I'll go ask her.

Oh, crap, that didn't work. She said that she has changed her mind about gay marriage! "Next time" she said, "I do intend to marry a man, for your information!"

Splitsville, here we come!

user-pic

"Don't you understand the powerful magnetic force that gays have on everyone else?"

I usually cross the street to avoid their erotic mesmerism, lest I blunder into an occasion of sin.
I avoid calculus too, lest there's an occasion of sine.
But stop me if I've told that one before, okay?

user-pic

If you look at their site, it says "people always ask 'how does gay marriage hurt you?'" and then lists four answers of "every day Americans." As far as I can tell, though, these are all explanations of how being anti-gay marriage has hurt them, not how gay marriage itself causes harm. Sure, being a bigoted moron will have ramifications. Letting two dudes marry or two chicks? Not so much.

user-pic

So if marriage is going to be between one man and one woman, how do they pick the couple that is allowed to marry?

user-pic

I'm looking forward to the inevitable catastrophe as they fall drastically short of their two-million goal.

I suspect they won't get more than hundreds or low thousands signed up, seriously. And then how miserable will they feel? Hardly anyone for marriage! (Or for minding other peoples business enough to sign up for this nonsense.)

btw, Xantar, think there will be any rusty trombone performances at the teabag party next week?

user-pic

Did you really have to put this under the headline Annals of Marketing???

user-pic

Thanks for that update link, Brian!

If these anti-marriage people are the same as the TeaBaggers (all sorts of unwanted imagery there), they're going to have problems with organizing, aren't they? Aren't the TeaBaggers deathly afraid that ACORN is going to swoop down and turn them all gay, and so, told people not to give out any contact information, to anyone?

user-pic

How long until they host a "cruise to nowhere" type event on Lake Erie using a vintage steamship? A true Cleveland Steamer.

user-pic

We were at it and kickin' the Urban Dictionary references, I'd like to add that between the teabaggers, the 2M4Ms and the minutemen, I don't know who is the most ironically and pop-culturally clueless.

Except for maybe the teabagging minutemen!

Bahaha!

"Hurry, while supplies last!"
(I love that!)

user-pic

I got a robo telephone call from Iowa Representative King last night. Sure would like to hear the results, also to hear how many hang-ups they got. Or how many hang-ups they have.

user-pic

Big picture: here's the problem that most people aren't talking about. You've got a very small minority of the gay population who has lucked out, met someone who is 'marriage material' and is ready to take that step. The other 80% is still trying to figure out where to meet someone, how to go on a date, what to do, how a relationship works, how to keep one going, etc...but nobody wants to talk about that. This whole marriage thing is going to be a disaster until we TALK about what's underneath all of this. Otherwise, it will just be another box to check that will not apply to the majority of the gay community. My fear is that we are doing a real disservice to most gay people by ignoring the fact that we weren't given much information on how to start relationships and make them work in order to be ready for marriage. And before you say it, I 100% agree for legalizing our marriages. I understand the legal reasons. I understand the hospital and power of attorney and all those things. I also understand the voices of MANY gay people who are angry that gay marriage is the only thing being talked about. How about issues that single gay people face? How about single gay people whose families have thrown them out, and now they've lost their jobs due to this recession, lost their health insurance, are going to lose their home, etc - what about them? I understand that these groups that are against GLBT people are vile and are using the possibility of gay marriage as some sort of sideshow performance for their agenda. Good for them - let them make fools of themselves. They are always going to be like this. I am already seeing the next generation (15-25 year olds) who are exactly like their parents - they have us too. This is not going to change for a long time - so let them think what they want.

In order for the gay community to be unified and support legalizing gay marriage - because let's face it - it's going to take a lot of work by us and for us to get this going - you have to sell it to gay people first. Right now the majority of the gay community is so cynical about not finding any relationship at all, or having it end within six months, that marriage is a lost cause - what good is legalizing marriage when one can't even meet someone? We have to restore a sense of hope and possibility for the entire community, not just the privileged few who have found someone and are ready to get married now.

user-pic

How about single gay people whose families have thrown them out, and now they've lost their jobs due to this recession, lost their health insurance, are going to lose their home, etc - what about them?

And how are they any different from single heterosexuals whose families have cut them off for whatever reason, have lost their jobs, and therefore their health insurance, due to the recession, and risk being made homeless? This is not an experience that is unique to gay people.

Neither is the difficulty of establishing lasting relationships. It doesn't come easy to heteros, either.

user-pic

I wonder if any of the 2m4m crew are going to a teabagging party!

user-pic

Why are all these people who want to protect marriage not bocotting the advertisers on their favorate shows like "The Bachelor," "Wife Swap," "Who wants to marry a millionaire," etc? If protecting marriage was REALLY what they were about they would start a campaign to boycott all companies that advertise on these shows as THEY are the true threat to the "sancity" to marriage. Until I see a national movement to do just this I will continue to dismiss these dangerous people as redneck homophobics who also happen to be posing the real threat to marriage.

user-pic

AMEN!

user-pic

"Don't you understand the powerful magnetic force that gays have on everyone else?"

That 'magnetic force' was well explained in Kevin Kline's movie In and Out... remember it was 'gay voodoo vibes' and all the kids in his classes stood, shivered and announced - Oops, I'm gay! Father, brother and mother declared the vibes had got them too - nothing cuter than Debbie Reynolds announcing sweetly, I'm a lesbian! Then the rest of the community joined in: his barber, his mailman, dress shop owner, all the volunteer fire department and even Tom Selleck. It was a tremendous affirmation and a delightful movie.

user-pic

I remain neutral when I first saw the issue. In my opinion, I think same-sex marriage isn't a bad thing. If they can find the one they truly love, take care with each other, and spend the rest of their life together, then I'll be happy for them. They cannot decide their sex when they were born, but they can have rights to pursue their love. No matter how high the divorce rate is; it does not matter with neither same-sex marriages or opposite-gender marriages, but it matters how people operate their marriage. However, I believe there are several further implications out there need to be concerned carefully(i.e.raising children and same-sex parent's explainations to their children).

I could give a rats a** as to what these folks want to do.
Just leave me and the laws of the land out of it.
Your self serving interests are taking up space on more important issues that face the whole world.
I don't speak to stop your movement or progress,
but suggest you put it in perspective of a wider view of the worlds problems.
If some matters are not adressed, your crusade will not matter.

Facebook

OK, so maybe the acronym wording is wrong or not well thought out but the message is clear. same-sex marriage is not going away. Look at some fertility clinic who have same-sex family building so they can become parents.
