Franken Rings In Court Victory, Quotes Paul Wellstone On Politics

At a press conference just now, outside his home in Minneapolis, Al Franken again declared victory in his campaign for the U.S. Senate, after the election contest court ruled that he was the winner of this race. (Special thanks to our good friends at The Uptake for carrying the live stream.)

"I am, of course, incredibly gratified by today's ruling and grateful to the judges," said the apparent Senator-elect, "to our legal team and most of all to Minnesota's civil servants, elected officials and citizen volunteers who have taken so much time, and taken so much effort over the last several weeks and months to make sure that the votes were accurately counted."

And one point he stressed repeatedly, was that he should finally be allowed to get to work in Washington. "It has been more than five months since Election Day, and more than three months since the winner of this election was supposed to be sworn in to go to work for the people of Minnesota. This long delay in the seating of Minnesota's second U.S. Senator has come at a time when our state badly needs help from Washington."

Franken also quoted his old friend Paul Wellstone -- the man whose death in a 2002 plane crash so clearly affected Al and inspired him to become truly serious about politics, to the point of spending years of his life running for his late friend's political office. After discussing all the problems the country faces, and the reasons he got into the race and why his supporters fought so hard, Franken said: "It's like what Paul Wellstone always said: Politics isn't about winning, it's about improving people's lives."

Franken then took questions from reporters, and the first one was what he thought about the likely scenario of Norm Coleman appealing this ruling and preventing Franken from being seated for still longer. "Well I have no control over what he does," said Franken. "And he says he's gonna appeal, so he is, to the Minnesota Supreme Court. But as these three judges said, this was a very fair election, totally scrutinized, they agreed unanimously on everything, and I'm very confident that we won."

"I don't think that by attacking the courts of this state, by attacking the election processes of this state, I don't think that's a winning argument in any court in this state -- especially the Supreme Court of this state. And after that I believe I will be certified and go to work in the u.s. Senate."

He did say he would likely travel to Washington between now and when he's officially certified as the winner, though not apparently in order to be seated: "But I've been going back and forth, in part of the process of just getting ready to hit the ground running."

Again, Franken was asked about what he would say to Norm Coleman about appealing. "Yes, I would probably urge him not to appeal," said Franken. "Although, you know I'm sure that he's made his mind up, and I don't - I'm a pretty persuasive guy, but I don't think I could win that one with him."

Coleman can't win in Minnesota, however, if US Supreme Court chooses to hear the appeal, we can be sure Roberts, Alito, Scalia, Thomas and Kennedy will vote to seat him.

franken may have a hard time getting the senate to vote him in. how could coleman get the votes?

Shalamarfine, 5 sure SC votes against Franken? That's definitely NOT something we can be sure of.

I would be surprised if the US Supreme Court would even consider this case. It is a states' rights issue. The court of last resort in this case should be the MN. Supreme Court.

Congradulations Al, I knew you could do it. Paul has never left your side, he would be proud. You see Paul Wellstone is one of my heroes too. You can never replace Paul but you can come pretty close. Congradulations again.

I was visiting DC when Wellstone died. I went to the Capitol to see the flags at half-staff and say goodbye and good job to my favorite Senator. When Coleman won the seat it was heartbreaking. Bush and Rove got another yes man and the Senate lost it's conscience. I am thrilled to have Franken pick up where we all 'left' off six years ago. If you ever read Franken's book 'LIES and the Lying Liars who tell Them' you can share the fun when someone tells the Senators from redneck bullshit hell that reality is making a huge comeback!

We are happy to help you. I was in northern Minnesota when it happened, pretty close. Al is the best thing that I can think of to bring Paul back. I cried when I drove back to Minneapolis. It hurt. I finally feel a little better.

Thinking back on that election cycle still evokes real sadness. Losing Paul just when the senate most needed his voice of progressive conscience was just devestating. And then the whole ordeal of the media distortion of his memorial rally and Coleman's subesquent narrow victory and Bushes re-election...

Paul's plane crashed on land I knew well immediately adjacent to a YMCA camp where I spent many happy childhood summers. Losing a personal hero... there... omg I practically need to be medicated when I think back to those weeks.

Paul used to say he was from "the democratic wing of the democratic party." I think we once again have a senator from Minnesota who will be able to make the same statement.

If Paul Wellstone's spirit is hanging around, it probably smiled briefly about Al's election victory and then said, "yes, but what are you doing to improve people's lives?" When we look back at Coleman's tenure in the Senate, what can we point to that actually helped improve the lives of Minnesotans? A woeful lack of genuine accomplishment for our citizens. Time for Al Franken to change all that for the better. Roll up your sleeves, Al. Time to do the people's work.

A guy who wrote a book titled "Rush Limbaugh is a big fat idiot" is now a Senator.

Think about that for a minute.

These guys are both talk show hosts. Will Limbaugh run for office? I think not.
