TPMDC Morning Roundup

Gates Asks For War Funding; To Testify Before Committee Today
Sec. of Defense Robert Gates is asking Congress to pass $83.4 billion in funding by Memorial Day for the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Gates will testify today at a 10 a.m. ET hearing of the Senate Appropriations Committee, joined by Sec. of State Hillary Clinton, where he will say: "After Memorial Day, we will need to consider options to delay running out of funds."

Obama's Day Ahead
President Obama will meeting at 1:30 p.m. ET with Sens. John McCain (R-AZ) and Carl Levin (D-MI), and Reps. Ike Skelton (D-MO) and John McHugh (R-NY). At 2:30 p.m. ET, he will speak at the "White House to Light House" Wounded Warrior Soldier Ride, a program to raise awareness about the challenges facing wounded veterans. At 3 p.m. ET, Obama will meet with Treasury Sec. Tim Geithner, and at 3:45 p.m. ET he will meet with Sec. of State Hillary Clinton, joined by Vice President Biden.

GOP To Launch Rebranding Effort -- Headed By McCain, Jeb Bush And Others
CNN reports that the Republican Party is set to launch a rebranding effort today, in a new series of town halls billed as the "National Council for a New America." Leading figures will include John McCain, Jeb Bush, Haley Barbour, Bobby Jindal and Mitt Romney.

Some Senate Dems Unhappy With Specter's Full Seniority
The Hill reports that senior Democratic Senators are upset with the deal that Harry Reid made with Arlen Specter, allowing Specter to keep his full seniority as if he had been elected as a Democrat back in 1980 -- thus pushing him ahead of various Dems for plum committee assignments. "I won't be happy if I don't get to chair something because of Arlen Specter," said Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), and another unnamed lawmaker said the full Democratic conference will likely vote against giving Specter full seniority after the 2010 election.

GOP Rep. Gerlach Being Encouraged To Challenge Specter (And Toomey)
CQ reports that Rep. Jim Gerlach (R-PA), who had been preparing to run for governor in 2010, is now being courted by some Republicans to run for Arlen Specter's Senate seat. Gerlach said he hasn't given the matter much thought, but he's not saying no, either: "Don't rule anything out in life." If Gerlach were to run, he would first have to face a primary against conservative Pat Toomey, whose bid has already caused Specter to switch parties.

GOP Donors Asking For Refunds From Specter
The Washington Times reports that Sen. Arlen Specter (D-PA) is already facing a stream of requests to refund campaign contributions from upset Republicans, including numerous GOP Senators. Specter is not legally required to do so, but in his announcement of his party switch he made it clear that he would in fact return money raised during this campaign cycle, upon request of the donor.

Rescued Captain To Testify At Senate Committee
Merchant captain Richard Phillips, who was rescued after being held hostage by Somali pirates, will testify today before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, at a 2:30 p.m. ET hearing. Committee Chairman John Kerry (D-MA) called for the hearing on piracy when Phillips was still being held hostage.

Rove: Obama Outsourcing President To Others, Relying On Photo-Ops
In his latest Wall Street Journal column, Karl Rove accuses President Obama of relying too much on other people to shape legislation, namely Congressional Democrats. Mr. "Obama is a great face for the Democratic Party. He is its best salesman and most persuasive advocate," Rove writes. "But he is beginning to leave the impression that he is more concerned with the aesthetics of policy rather than its contents. In the long run, substance and consequences define a presidency more than signing ceremonies and photo-ops."

Wait, wait: First Bill Kristol's column on Wednesday making the case that bad news equals good news...and NOW Karl Rove offers advice on "substance and consequence," having shepherded George W through 8 disastrous, substance-free years? The question is not whether Colbert is serious, but whether Kristol and Rove are also stealth comedians.

My goodness if I see Karl Rove I am going to bash his chin in. WHY ISN'T HE IN JAIL!?!

... I am going to bash his chin in.

Which one?

...another unnamed lawmaker said the full Democratic conference will likely vote against giving Specter full seniority after the 2010 election.

How about while they're at it they also vote against re-electing Harry Reid as their "leader"?

user-pic

Can we look forward to Bobby Jindal performing an exorcism at a National for a New America Town Hall? Please?

user-pic

Karl Rove has zero credibility. Most people now assume exactly the opposite of what is coming out of his mouth is true.

What I want to know is how a man who lost a presidential bid in 2000, kissed George Bush's behind for 8 years, lost another presidential bid in 2008, and first started serving in office when people were still flying Braniff, gets to head a group called Council for a New America.

Memo to Senator McCain: Why not take up the cause for OLD America? I think you're be more comfortable with your own kind.

user-pic

Good point, but are there enough of McCain's "own kind" still around to fill a "town hall" meeting? They were scarce before the election, and my impression is that their numbers are rapidly declining. Then, again, maybe McCain has started twittering too?

user-pic

Karl Rove: "Obama acting more like president, less like monarch."

user-pic

Rebranding? Ha ha ha. Its like trying to put a new coat of paint on a pile of crap and using the same painters that caused everything to really stink.

user-pic

Lipstick on a pig, baby!

user-pic

"But he is beginning to leave the impression that he is more concerned with the aesthetics of policy rather than its contents. In the long run, substance and consequences define a presidency more than signing ceremonies and photo-ops."

You're fucking kidding me right. I think this fuck nut Rove thinks he is still in the Bush administration. Hypocrisy and the pot calling the kettle back cant fully capture Rove's evil delusions

user-pic

"...substance and consequences define a presidency more than signing ceremonies and photo-ops."

Really, Karl? Really? So, like, showing up at the drowning of New Orleans would be more important that showing up for a photo-op with John McCain on his birthday? And exactly when did you learn that?

user-pic

I wonder what kind of Republican McCain will be today? A social conservative, a fiscal conservative, a moderate, a hawk or Joe the Senator?

McCain has added a whole new level of flip flopping to the political arena. No wonder he's such good friends with Specter.

PEACE

Rebranding? The GOP still does not get it. It isn't about your PR efforts. People don't like the GOP right now because of their policies. Coming up with a new slogan or a new way to insult Obama (fascism is the new socialism) is not going to change a thing.

Also, rebranding? Using McCain (loser), a Bush (do I even need to make a snarky comment on using the name Bush to rebrand anything?), Romney (who lost to McCain who then lost to Obama), Jindal (who can't give a speech without people pointing and laughing)? Good God, the GOP is doomed to irrelevance for some time to come.

user-pic

We should all be encouraging them them to continue the effort. If the faces of the Repub party are a shrub of another name, a loser, another loser, and an exorcist, how could we possibly ask for more? Perhaps we could hope they find a cretin for a party chairman and...oops, already accomplished!

user-pic

Would love to write off the GOP and they certainly seem to be headed into irrelevance, but unfortunately history shows the wheel turns quickly sometimes. Regan, Dems in 2002 etc.

I keep thinking about that core group of 30% or so who still support W and thought he did a bang up job. The GOP doesn't have to start from scratch.

Their weird coalition of the rich, the wannbe rich and the evangelicals looks to be smaller and less likely to cohere this time.

It is good to be a Dem at the moment - would be nice to have been left surpluses not crises by the former occupant.

Labor Day in Europe tomorrow have a good weekend.

maybe the repiglicons havnt noticed, but Obamas election WAS the new america.

pathetic attempt to gain some attention.

and who do they think will be paying any attention?

you think after they have wiped up all the crazies to a fever pitch that they will become any less crazed now??

lol..this is going to turn out as lame as steele.

user-pic

The Rove column is the latest version of the "he should stop campaigning and start governing" meme that's been circulating on the right.

By which they mean: "Please, Mr. President, stay out of public view so we can monopolize cable news time to constantly call you a socialist and fascist!"

user-pic

Um, isn't it the ROLE of Congressional Democrats to craft legislation? I guess Rove still thinks like he did when Bush was in power--that legislation comes from the White House.

user-pic

Um, Mr. Rove, have you perhaps forgotten what exactly it is that the legislative branch of government does? And what the executive branch is supposed to do?

Oh, nevermind -- what was I thinking? You've never read that goddamn piece of paper anyway, except maybe after you wiped your ass with it.
