In Letter, Reid Sends Warning Shot At Senate Republicans--Cooperate On Health Care

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) has sent a letter to Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) warning that--as we reported Friday--Democrats will give Republicans until mid-October to reach a compromise on comprehensive health care legislation before the Democrats use the budget reconciliation process to circumvent the filibuster and pass reform.

Nearly 46 million Americans - including 15 percent of your constituents in Kentucky - have no health insurance, and the problem grows worse by the day. In Nevada, more than one out of three people under the age of 65 went without health insurance during 2007 and 2008 - and more than three-quarters of them went without health care for six months or longer.

In order for this bipartisan process to take root, Republicans must demonstrate a sincere interest in legislating. Rather than just saying no, you must be willing to offer concrete and constructive proposals. We cannot afford more of the obstructionist tactics that have denied or delayed Congress' efforts to address so many of the critical challenges facing this nation....

Make no mistake - we are determined to reform health care this year. Our strong preference is to do so by working alongside you and your caucus. The health of our citizens and our economy are at stake; neither will be able to recover if we do not....

We look forward to hearing your ideas and working with you. The budget we will vote on this week gives us nearly six months to work together toward a comprehensive reform bill. Let's use that time to work together in our common interest rather than against each other and against the interests of the American people.... There is a seat for you at the table; we hope you take it.

You can read the whole letter here. One important thing to keep in mind is that, if the standard Senate process fails to produce binding legislation, the resulting process--reconciliation--isn't just a straightforward slam dunk. Republicans and outside interests will still be able to interfere in a number of ways, and corrupt the resulting legislation in a number of ways. But, as we've seen several times already this session, 60 votes is a high hurdle, even when the Democratic caucus is 58 members large.

Reminds me of a thing I did for ICHC:

It's easily the most popular thing I did at that site, and it illustrates precisely what Sen. Reid is up against. Feel free to favorite me if you agree.

Yes, there's nothing the Weak Reid is better at than strongly worded letters. Take that, GOP!

Yawn.

The basic problem is that the Republicans have a bunch of ideas that would work great Republican Bizarro Delusion World, where they all live, but are insane here in the real world. They put forward crazy crap like "shut down employer provided insurance by taxing employers for providing it and then let people deduct five of the twelve grand they'll have to pay to get it themselves" and really believe that magic free market pixie dust will take care of the rest because in Republican Bizarro Delusion World, stuff like that works great.

Democrats respond by saying, "Jesus, if you're not going to offer a serious idea, then shut up and get the hell out of the way while the grown-ups work," and the Republicans are stunned because they think they did offer a great idea that was just unfairly rejected out of hand by those damn Democrats who think government is the solution to every problem.

I sort of like this description. People living in Bizarro World should be treated with compassion. They shouldn't be allowed to drive the bus, however.

I guess I'm still waiting to be impressed with the skillfulness of Reid's leadership. A "sternly worded letter" isn't have a big effect on my opinion.

Our children isn't learning.

That should read isn't having much of an effect

Uh-oh, the GOP is trembling in its boots now — Harry is seriously miffed. That means it might be a full 5 days before he quietly throws up his hands and acquiesces to the Republicans. He's the GOP's best friend.

For once I agree with Sen. Reid and Democrats in passing Comprehensive Health care reform. Hopefully it is the Single Payer system, but with so much corruption in politics and the influence of lobbyists for elitists in the trillion dollar medical insurance industry it’s unlikely? THE PEOPLE do not need middleman anymore as they become rich of the backs of sick people. It will be very interesting to see what is enacted on Capitol Hill? Let us see if the majority of Democrats and president Obama are really concerned about the working man? We saw E-Verify, the legal status verification system, dissolved by Harry Reid and House speaker Nancy Pelosi. Perhaps this time they will contribute to a hurting economy by introducing Universal Health Care for all?. Just have to ensure illegal nationals go home to get health care--NOT ON THE BACKS OF US TAXPAYERS? GUESS WHERE BILLIONS OF TAXPAYERS MONEY IS GOING...?

And will the MSM report on this offer of bipartisanship so that the American people know exactly who's ignoring their needs? Sigh.

user-pic

Reid does not have the intimidation gene that Speakerette Pelosi does. Brittanicus has a valid point about Congress doing nothing regarding the millions of non-citizens who are here. That has to be resolved first.

user-pic

For crying out loud you are giving this woman exactly what she wants.

user-pic

Whoa, wrong thread.

Now, as to Reid, I see he is once again offering preemptive surrender. He's ready to compromise before the bill is introduced.

I predict Americans are going to be totally screwed with this healthcare bill.
