Inhofe: Specter's Switch Is "First Visible Evidence" Of GOP Comeback!
Now here's an interesting spin on the Arlen Specter switch. Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK) appeared on Fox News today, where he presented the case that Specter's switch is the first evidence that people are rebelling against Obama, and that the Republican Party is coming back!
Inhofe explained that this was a sign that Obama and the Democrats were overreaching, just as Bill Clinton did in 1993, and the people are rebelling against it just as they did in 1994:
"Now the evidence of this was found out when Arlen Specter made his decision," Inhofe explained. "And that is all of a sudden, we find out that Arlen Specter is down in the Republican Party, down in terms of his popularity. The guy that ran against him and was defeated by Arlen Specter in, six years ago, now is so far ahead of him that Arlen Specter's own advisers said there's no way that you can win this thing unless you change to the Democratic Party. Now to me, that's the evidence it's coming."
Inhofe appears to be thinking here that the state of opinion in the Republican Party is tantamount to the nation's opinion overall. This might be true enough if it's just applied to his home state of Oklahoma. But as we've learned in 2006, 2008 and recent months, this doesn't exactly apply to the whole country.

Inhofe's spin on this is quite excessive. That said, there's still a case to be made that there are some good things the GOP can get out of Specter's move. For instance, Campaign Diaries argues that Republicans might have improved their chances of keeping this seat beyond 2010 with Specter’s move:

Ridge would be their only shot in hell but (1) McCain was the GOP's only shot in hell in '08, how'd that work out?(2) Ridge would have an even harder time than Spector in the repub primary, (3) Ridge would likley prefer to end his public service career as former gov/ former cabinet secretary than losing senate candidate and finally...(4) He's pro-choice, is Toomey(& C for G) going to move aside for a differnt moderate pro-choice GOPer?

Completely agree that Ridge would die in the primary. The PA GOP isn't going to nominate a moderate Republican to replace Arlen.

Pro-choice v. pro-choice! I LOVE it!
But it surely means that ReThugs just would not turn out, or would turn out to vote for an American Independent Party candidate.
But seriously, if Arlen could not win a ReThug primary, what makes you think Ridge could either, now that the remaining ort of the party is NEVER going to vote for a pro-choice candidate?

Of course, Bill Clinton did not get a majority of the vote in 1992, as Obama did this time around, and I don't think his approval numbers were anywhere close to where Obama's are now. So he and his party were certainly more ripe for losing seats than Obama and the Dems are now.

Agree. There are no similarities between 1992 and 2008. In 1992 the Democrats had held the House for 58 of the previous 60 years. The party was long in the tooth, without a coherent set of ideas or vision. Clinton won a 3-way race campaigning as a Republican Lite, promoting softer versions of many of the Republican issues, and by focusing on the weak economy.
In 2008 it was the Republicans who'd held the reigns of power, and at the time it seemed like they'd had them forever. It was the Republicans who'd suffered a long string of corruption scandals and whose ideas seemed old and ineffective.
It's important to note that in America legislative power shifts move at a glacial speed. It took 62 years before the Republicans finally won both houses after the Great Depression. And even though their majorities were slim it took 14 years of mostly incompetent leadership before the Democrats won them back.
No, 2010 won't be 1994.

That seems to me to be a common belief in conservatives here in Texas, and Oklahoma is even more conservative-ridden.
The conservatives use every possible technique of self-delusion and social self-isolation to maintain their beliefs. It's really pretty amazing. But Inhofe is a clear result of the process.
I suspect that we are going to see the conservative-dominated Republican party shrink to impotence, while the Democrats are going to break up into the conservative and liberal Democrats. The only real question is whether the Democrats will keep the disagreements within the party, making the Democratic primary into a lock on the general election, or if one of the two groups of Democrats will take over the structure of the Republican Party and resurrect it because it already has a useful state-by-state national legal structure.
The internecine battles within the Democratic Party is reminiscent of the period when parties were first forming under Thomas Jefferson, and of Texas after the Civil War where the Demcratic Primary was the election until the crazies recreated the conservative Republican Party. (George H. W. Bush was a key player in that action, as was Nixon.) (Historical analogies are always an iffy way to reason and predict the future.)

Inhofe might really believe what he's selling. I lived in two large and democratic cities for the first part of my politically aware adulthood. As such, I could not fathom how 1994 happened. I couldn't get my mind around it because I was surrounded by like-minded individuals who overwhelmingly voted the way I did.
Then, I returned home to my red state (which is now blue!). And now I get it. But for Inhofe, who lives in a state where one political position overwhelms the other, he probably has a hard time getting it. When everybody that you talk to on a daily basis thinks the same as you, it's easy to assume the entire world does too. As the Republicans become even more geographically isolated and concentrated, I look for them to become even more delusional.

That is a really good point. I think it is the reason George Bush stayed so happy all the way through his disastrous 8 years; he really and truly believed his own swagger and no one wised him up.
But it is also a good thing to remember for our own sakes. When I hear Bachman and Hannity and Beck et al, I know they are either lying or crazy, but those who listen to them really don't. Remember the crowds that Sarah stirred up last fall -- they are true believers too. I don't think we are in any danger of complacency now, but it is something to watch out for.

Inhofe's comment makes perfect sense if you interpret his "we" as referring not to the Republican party, but to his own brand of extreme conservatives. Understand Inhofe comes from a universe in which, as far as he is concerned, Specter has more in common with Obama than he does with Inhofe - and that was true even before the defection. From that perspective, it is correct to say that the fact that the Specter/Obama coalition would not win in a Republican primary in 2010, whereas the Specter/Kerry coalition did win a Republican primary in 2004. Inhofe's brand of conservatism is actually on the rise. Now throw in the assumption that Inhofe's brand of conservatism is what people truly believe, and that the only reason that people don't vote for Republicans is because they are insufficiently devoted to Inhofean principles, and you arrive at the conclusion that the resurgence of real conservatives in the primary will be the resurgence of conservatism in America.
It's not actually that hard to understand; you just have to be willing to enter into the mind of a true believer.

ahem *From that perspective, it is correct to say that the fact that the Specter/Obama coalition would not win in a Republican primary in 2010, whereas the Specter/Kerry coalition did win a Republican primary in 2004 indicates a resurgence of conservatism.
April 29, 2009 4:51 PM | Reply | Permalink
It doesn't point to a resurgence of conservatism at all. Quite the opposite. The hard right only gained control of the Republican Party in Pennsylvania (and a lot of other states) by hijacking the party machinery and then antagonizing the moderates into bolting, thus leaving the party entirely to its regional mouthbreathing rump. That this faction has consolidated its hold on the machinery of the Republican Party does not mean that it can do so in a general election — in fact, their chances of winning general elections get slimmer and slimmer the more conservative their candidates get.
Indeed, since the disaffected former Republicans now swell the ranks of the Democrats, it is progressivism, not conservatism, that is resurgent.

Well, just wait until Sen. Santorum, who is almost a true conservative, endorses Toomey, you'll see his numbers take off. Santorum is still extremely popular in this state, and proves that conservatism still thrives in Pennsylt--what?
I'm honestly surprised Swann isn't in the running. I mean, why not?
One thing though: the center they named after Ridge in Presque Isle is very lovely, I recommend a visit. And I don't think he'd run against Specter. Corbett and Schweiker I doubt could make it against the CfG - Toomey's not really a candidate (in the same sense that Dr. Porter was never really a candidate against English) so much as a placeholder. An angry, ugly placeholder. But I don't see a Senate equivalent of Dahlkemper in the Republican future.

And this puts people like Inhofe into the area of denying Santo's conservative bona fides - which I suppose is possible, as I assume Toomey is not Catholic - or ignoring his previous and present existence completely.
Or - and here is what I'm hoping - that someone like Bachmann will just act as if Santorum were still in fact representing Pennsylvania in the Senate, just with a new haircut.
