Lieberman Welcomes "Another Independent Minded Democrat" To The Caucus
Sen. Joe Lieberman (Democrat-turned-Independent Democrat, Connecticut) put out this statement welcoming Sen. Arlen Specter (Republican-turned-Democrat, Pennsylvania) to the Dem caucus:
"I enthusiastically welcome my good friend Arlen Specter into the Democratic caucus. It will be very good to have the company of yet another independent minded Democrat in the caucus!
"I have always admired Arlen as a man of deep principle who has been a bridge builder to get things done in the Senate. Arlen understands that we get things accomplished when we listen to the vital center of American politics. I know that Arlen will continue to make a major contribution to the Senate and the nation as an effective independent leader and problem solver."

Joe is still a jackass.
I agree with all the comments that it would have been preferred to get another Casey in 2010. Of course Arlen isn't in the greatest health and is old as dirt, so even if he gets re-elected, he may reach a point where he needs to retire. I don't think we'll be stuck with him until January 2017.

Exactly. I just went from "Sweet! My state has two Democrats now" to "Ugh! My state is representated by a Lieberman now."

Eat me, Joe. And F-U for not responding to my weekly emails asking you to take a long walk off a short pier.
Like Joe, Old Arlen has no loyalty whatsoever to anything but his own political future.

I just threw up in my mouth reading that release.
This was a bad move for the Democrats. A moderate Dem was a healthy favorite to beat Toomey, now we're stuck with somebody who will vote against the Dem majority just as much as he'll vote with it.
This is a win for the Bayh centrist group because this insures one of their own keeps his seat.

Joe, shut up, you douchebag.

This should be the kiss of death for Arlen.
But I suspect the deal on this one included Arlen's votes for a "few" policies between now and 2010 that matter quite a lot--like healthcare and energy to name just two. And a deal isn't set in stone--Arlen doesn't deliver then Obama won't deliver. And let's not kid ourselves--Harry Reid and Leiberman don't matter; Obama's support really matters.
I trust Obama to have made a very good deal and we can expect important policy votes well before the Penna primary. If Arlen doesn't deliver, he certainly won't be the supported candidate.

WHAT? A new turn-coat in the party? oh boy, oh boy, oh boy, oh boy, oh boy, oh boy, oh boy!
Geeze - it's like your mother sat you down and explained you are going to get a new step-father, then in walked Zell Miller!

This just made me laugh my ass off...
Joe thinks that he is an 'independent minded democrat'. That's what he likes to call it anyway.
I would call him something more odorous and slimy and completely lacking in integrity.
I have to say for myself while I'm no Specter fan, I think Specter has more integrity than Lieberman.
