During a trip to Pakistan yesterday, John Kerry was told by the country's leadership that the United States should not attach conditions to President Obama's proposed $7.5 billion in foreign aid. ASU OBAMA SNUB WILL BE COSTLY

Needless to say, all hell broke loose when the ASU "Obama-snub" news was made public, and the university has found itself caught up in an extremely embarrassing situation. So instead of just eating crow, making a public apology to the President and offering him the honorary degree afterall, the university tried to "fix" the snowballing slight over the weekend. The ASU President issued a statement saying that instead of an honorary degree, the university will instead designate a group of scholarship students as the "President Barack Obama Scholars" and will name a special scholarship in his honor. HUH?????

Naming a scholarship in his honor is a "very nice gesture," and is the sort of thing you give IN ADDITION TO, not INSTEAD OF. So unless ASU is creating the "Obama Scholars" AND also awarding him an honorary doctorate degree just as every other commencement speaker has ALWAYS received, there will be hell to pay! Apparently ASU still doesn't understand how unbelievably rude their actions are and how unbelievably embarrassing this situation is about to become. Ironically, this is the first time they've denied the honorary degree to a commencement speaker AND their slight just so happens to be against the very first African-American President of the United States! This is a deadly minefield they are already failing miserably at navigating and with each passing day ASU seems to keep digging themselves into a deeper hole, assuring that this story is FAR from over.

The President of ASU is a McCain donor. He decided to take out his partisan bitterness is a decidedly unprofessional manner. He deserves to get rolled for this.

"No strings"? What are the Pakistanis talking about, does anybody know? They're angling about something specific, right?

user-pic

Well, the Bush admin was in the habit of shipping billions in unmarked bills to Pakistan. They are understandably upset to have to account for the way they use the money. Er, our money.

user-pic

This was literally the case under Musharaf.

Says TPMMuckraker:

In fact, however, a considerable amount of the money the U.S. gives to Pakistan is administered not through U.S. agencies or joint U.S.-Pakistani programs. Instead, the U.S. gives Musharraf's government about $200 million annually and his military $100 million monthly in the form of direct cash transfers. Once that money leaves the U.S. Treasury, Musharraf can do with it whatever he wants. He needs only promise in a secret annual meeting that he'll use it to invest in the Pakistani people. And whatever happens as the result of Rice's review, few Pakistan watchers expect the cash transfers to end.

That's a pretty amazing story. Cash, and no accounting. Wow.

user-pic

"No Strings" so America just ups the foreign aid handed out to Pakistan and they can do with it whatever they choose? Pffft.

It's extortion - give up billions of dollars or we'll become a failed state with loose nukes.

user-pic

I guess they've been talking to AIG executives.

user-pic

How about this: No strings, and NO FUCKING MONEY!

user-pic

Senator Kerry,

Please feel free to attach at the strings you want to aid to Pakistan.

Love,
The American People
(BTW We sign your paycheck.)

Tie nice big sticks at the end of the those carrots with those strings while you're at it.

Okay, I'm in!

I am prepared now to volunteer to help the Pakistani people in this trying time: by accepting cash in respect of my assurance that I will use the money in the advancement of interests of the Pakistani people, as I may cognize such in my unfettered discretion. Unmarked bills, and light of our special international relationship, no tedious receipts, please! Hey, we're bigger than that!

And I am fully prepared to undergo any reasonable number of hokey meetings/ceremonies/testimonials in which I weep/flagellate self/wax maudlin, about how *crucial* this is at this darkest of hours, always thus right before the dawn, tra-la-la-la-la!

That's how much I CARE!
