Obama: "I'm Not Naïve."
Speaking to a student town hall in Istanbul, Turkey, President Obama emphasized both his ambitions and his realism about his hopes for international cooperation. "My attitude is, is that all these things are hard," he said. "I mean, I'm not naïve. If it was easy, it would have already been done. Somebody else would have done it. But if we don't try, if we don't reach high, then we won't make any progress. And I think that there's a lot of progress that can be made."

This is a big day in the Minnesota Senate race, as the state will count a number of previously-rejected absentee ballots, which the judges examined yesterday to select the ones for counting. The public has mixed attitudes on the economy: Only 34% believe it is getting worse, compared to 60% in December 2008, and 20% say it's getting better compared to 8% in December. On the other hand, 49% expect the recession to last another two years or more, 38% say a year, and only 10% say six months.
Lieberman Pans Obama On Missile Defense
The Hill reports that Joe Lieberman has sent a letter to the White House, co-signed by one Democrat and four Republicans, criticizing the Obama administration for planning to pull back on missile defense. "Cooperation on missile defense is now a critical component of many of our closest security partnerships around the world," the letter said. "We fear that cuts to the budget for missile defense could inadvertently undermine these relationships and foster the impression that the United States is an unreliable ally."
Chafee Forms Committee To Run For Gov. of Rhode Island

At least he can read, unlike the king. You can't read my pet goat every time from a podium when you are supposed to be giving a press conference or speech as president of the US.
What is it with you guys about the stupid teleprompter anyway to deliver prepared remarks? It really seems silly and like you have nothing better to criticize him on.

Yep. That's all they got. And if he was memorizing his speeches the complaint would be "Obama is spending too much time memorizing speeches and not enough time worrying about the economy". It's nothing but white noise from Rush Limbaugh and his minions.

Personally, I think it's great they cannot come up with anything better to criticize him about.
It's been said before but bears repeating: Using the teleprompter is no different from using note cards.

I'm not sure you guys understand the codetalk behind the teleprompter thing to be dismissing it so lightly. I guess I'm going to have to lay it out for you.
See, Obama is black, and therefore mentally inferior to real Americans. That's axiomatic. Thus, his entire biography is a monument to that evil socialist plot to replace hardworking white people with underqualified minorities known as "affirmative action." To the extent that he sounds intelligent, it is only, indeed, can only be given the natural order of things, because he is reading things off of a teleprompter that were written for him by white people. (Asians may also be involved, but they count as white people for purposes of measuring inherent racially determined intellectual ability.) This should be self-evident to you, but if you need further truth, look at how he frequently says "uh" when he is speaking extemporaneously. In fact, that's how you can tell. If he says "uh," it means he's not reading from a teleprompter and can't respond with any of the handful of memorized statements that he doesn't really understand that were stuffed into his head by the hidden white people who are really running things.
So who are these white people and what is the real agenda behind this puppet president? Well, okay, sure George Soros and Kos, they're clearly in on it, but who else? And why are they hiding? It can only be because a hidden socialist plot against America and our sacred Constitutional values is afoot, that much is clear.
And the key that unlocks this diabolical secret socialist conspiracy against our sacred constitutional rights and way of life is understanding that he is the only president in history who has used this contemptable piece of technological trickery known as a teleprompter.
Hope that clarifies things for you.

Well, that goes without saying. They've been at it for years.
Unless, of course, you're implying that we need to be regulating water quality. Nice try, commie!

Spot on. Even in the XXIst Century, the Bell-Curvers are still pushing the nineteenth and early twentieth century notion that non-whites are only capable of parroting without any true understanding and that the masses are deluded to think otherwise. The fact that Obama has a perfect score of batting hardballs out of the park unscripted is too much reality for their racist ideology.

It's difficult for some people to believe that a Black man can be that eloquent and intelligent. Others - mostly the men - are simply jealous and can't believe that they are not the smartest one in the room (with Obama). He makes them feel inadequate.

Cue SFX exclaiming "Where is everybody's sense of humor??" in 3, 2, 1 ...
What's so ridiculous about the GOP's obsession with teleprompters is that a) McCain did such a crappy job when he himself used the device (see his infamous "green screen" speech the night Obama accepted the Dem nomination) and b) Obama cleaned his clock at the debates when he was sans prompter -- giving detailed answers when all McCain could do was wander the stage ranting about earmarks, the only sound byte his handlers had gotten him to memorize the night before.
And I agree with The Illustrious Commenter Formerly Known as NCSteve that this is a dog whistle. I think they should heed David Brooks' advice that this whole Palin-influenced anti-elite/education thing is not a winner among independents, many of whom have some of that there education thing.

To be honest, depending on where you live in Austria determines what you speak. Around the southern portions of the Brenner pass, you'll get a mix of Italian and German, the northern parts will give you a German but with a weird accent and with Bavarian mixed in. In the east you'll hear French, German, Italian and the West is also a big mix.
So, I guess Obama could have said, I don't know what you say in German, Italian, French, Yugoslavian, Chech, etc.
It seems that would have been a bit awkward.
But, I can see where you are coming from. If I knew I would be irrelevant for the next eight years or so, I would probably fling poo and everyone too.

About NY-20: Much has been made of the absentee ballots' partisan breakdown, but not that much about the county-by-county breakdown of where these ballots are coming from and that's a shame because there is a very clear lesson there: Counties where Murphy performed well are dramatically over-represented in the absentee ballot count. Campaign Diaries does">http://campaigndiaries.com/2009/04/06/simple-calculations/">does the math.

Makes sense for Obama to visit Iraq. Another smart move.
A good day looks to be in the offing -
Polls like Obama (wonder when the media will catch on). Franken another step closer to being seated. Murphy looking good in NY.
Brightens up an otherwise icky work day.
