TPMDC Morning Roundup

Obama To Order Cabinet To Cut $100 Million
President Obama will reportedly use his Cabinet meeting today to order the Cabinet to cut a combined $100 million in costs from their departments. The move is intended so that Obama will be able to quickly point to savings that the administration is implementing, from cuts in government waste.

President Obama will hold his first Cabinet meeting today at 11:30 a.m. ET in the Cabinet Room. At 2:35 p.m. ET, he will meet at CIA headquarters with Director Leon Panetta, the deputy director and other CIA officials, and will deliver remarks to CIA employees at 3:30 p.m. ET. At 4:30 p.m. ET, he and Vice President Biden will meet with Robert Gates.

Biden's Day Ahead

Congress Returning From Break
Congress is returning to Washington, after a two-week recess marked by Tea Parties, talk-show appearances and other public rhetorical jousting. The Associated Press says key issues that will be taken up this week include credit cards, health care and energy.

Senate Returns To Held-Up Nominations
The Washington Post reports that the Senate is poised to battle again this week over several stalled nominations from the Obama administration. Most notable is Christopher Hill, the nominee to be Ambassador to Iraq, whose nomination is being held up by John McCain and Lindsey Graham.

Al-Qaeda's Zawahri Blasts Obama In New Web Audio
Al-Qaeda's second-in-command Ayman al-Zawahri told Muslims in a new Internet audio posting not to trust President Obama: "America came to us with a new face, with which it is trying to fool us. He is calling for change, but (he aims) to change us so that we abandon our religion and rights."

NYT: Obama's Revenue Plans Hit Resistance In Congress
The New York Times observes that President Obama has run into resistance in Congress on key revenue-raising proposals needed to finance his agenda on health care and other issues. Key examples include Obama's effort to limit itemized deductions and thus bring in $318 billion, as well as his big proposal to sell carbon emissions permits for $600 billion.

Republicans Bash Obama And "Fascism"
The New York Times reports that some Republicans are now taking up the word "fascism" to go after President Obama, an example of rhetorical inflation from "liberal" or even "socialism." Explained former Michigan GOP chair Saul Anuzis, a former candidate for the RNC chairmanship: "We've so overused the word 'socialism' that it no longer has the negative connotation it had 20 years ago, or even 10 years ago. Fascism -- everybody still thinks that's a bad thing."

so fascism = bad. ok, got it. but exactly how is the current administration fascist? the GOP, unless it figures out how to get from point A to point Zxxyzz, will continue to sound like whiny monkeys denied their bananas. which is fine with me.

user-pic

What's so hilarious is that socialism and fascism are pretty much polar opposites.

I guess if one doesn't stick, try the other one.

user-pic

Well if "fascist" is a bad word then it certainly must apply to President Obama. Now that's settled!

user-pic

Cut $100 million? I'll bet with a little streamlining of the bidding process, Bob Gates could probably come up with $50 million right now.

user-pic

So the GOP plan is to bring a positive connotation to fascism by associating it with Obama?

user-pic

We've so overused the word 'socialism' that it no longer has the negative connotation it had 20 years ago, or even 10 years ago.

Maybe you shouldn't have used it ad nauseam for the last three months then, huh?

"America came to us with a new face, with which it is trying to fool us. He is calling for change, but (he aims) to change us so that we abandon our religion and rights."

Sounds like Zawahri's been getting his talking points from the tea baggers.

user-pic

And when fascist doesn't work, how long before "nazi" isn't trotted out using the same slippery slope explanation Azunis is using.

You know what has a real negative connotation Saul? Call Obama a "Republican"...
(Of course this has already been tried by Gingrich to an extent)

user-pic

Hell even better call Obama a "child molester" that isn't true either, but the facts have never stopped desperate Republicans.

user-pic

McCain tried that one too, if you recall.

Some are already heading in the direction of calling Obama a Nazi. Go on Huffington Post and look for the pictures from last week's teabagger parties. There's one in which Obama is dressed up like Hitlter with the little Hitler mustache. Of course nowhere in this discourse is there any explanation as to why they think Obama is a facist. I think it has something to do with the fact that they know they can't get away with calling him a nigger, which I'm guessing is what they really want to call him.

They probably already do, at least when Mike Steele is out of the room.

user-pic

I think when all is said and done, we'll be able to credit the Republicans for the economic recovery, if only for their massive purchases of tinfoil for all those tinfoil hats.

user-pic

and tea bags, don't forget the tea bags.

user-pic

Once fascist is overused then my guess is that they will go back to calling him a gangster (you know, the Chicago pol smear).
