TPMDC Morning Roundup

Obama: We Will Deal With Drugs Coming From Mexico -- And Guns From The U.S.
President Obama is headed to Mexico today, where he will offer U.S. solidarity in the Drug War. Speaking to CNN en Espanol yesterday, Obama explained: "We are going to be dealing not only with drug interdiction coming north, but also working on helping to curb the flow of cash and guns going south."

Obama's Day Ahead: Discussing High-Speed Rail, Traveling To Mexico
President Obama will be speaking at 9 a.m. ET this morning, discussing proposals to build a high-speed rail network. He will then leave for Mexico City, and is scheduled to arrive there at 2:10 p.m. ET. At 3:10 p.m. ET he will meet with President Felipe Calderón, and the two will hold a press conference at 4:45 p.m. ET. Obama will meet with U.S. Embassy employees at 5:40 p.m. ET, and will hold a working dinner at 9 p.m. ET.

Biden's Day Ahead
Vice President Biden will be attending President Obama's speech on high-speed rail this morning. He will then travel to Missouri, and is scheduled to arrive at Whiteman Air Force Base at 12:45 p.m. ET, where he will hold an event with Rep. Ike Skelton (D-MO) to thank the troops for their service. After visiting with the troops, Biden will head to Jefferson City, where he will hold an event alongside Gov. Jay Nixon (D-MO) and Commerce Secretary Gary Locke, promoting the stimulus program at the BB Transformer Factory.

CQ: Obama Charitable Deduction Plan Would Adversely Affect...Obama
CQ reports that President Obama's proposal to cap the tax deduction on charitable deductions by top-earners would have had a serious effect on one particular taxpayer: Obama himself. Had this proposal been in effect last year, Barack and Michelle Obama would only have been able to deduct $48,174 out of their $172,050 in charitable donations, which would have resulted in an extra $20,000 on their their tax bill.

Rove: Tea Parties Show GOP Has To Stress Tax Cuts
In his latest column in the Wall Street Journal, Karl Rove hails the Tea Party protests, and urges the GOP to keep pushing tax cuts. "The open question is whether Republicans will be boosted by the nascent tea-party movement," Rove writes. "House Republicans smartly offered a proposed spending plan this year that would freeze nondefense discretionary spending, suspend earmarks for five years, and reform entitlements. But cutting spending won't be enough. Taxes matter -- and will matter more in the coming years."

White House Goes Into Lockdown -- Thanks To Box Of Tea
The White House was placed under lockdown by the Secret Service yesterday, after a package was thrown over the fence of the North Lawn. As it turned out, the package was a box of tea bags -- and along the way, the commotion itself shut down the Tea Party anti-Obama protest.

AP: Governing Not Easy For Palin
The Associated Press examines Sarah Palin's current political goings-on in Alaska, finding that she has become a polarizing figure who, while popular, nevertheless has an uncertain future. "Her actions don't fit together in a pattern," said University of Alaska Fairbanks political science professor Gerald McBeath, when asked what Palin's plans might be. "So that leaves me to suspect she hasn't figured it out. She hasn't decided. Or alternatively, maybe that's just part of her style and we just haven't gotten used to it yet."

Ron Paul Makes Cameo In Bruno
Ron Paul has an upcoming cameo -- unwittingly, of course -- in the upcoming Bruno movie by Sacha Baron Cohen. "I was expecting an interview on Austrian economics," Paul told Curtis Sliwa. "So, that didn't turn out that way. But, by the time he started pulling his pants down, I ... What in (inaudible) is going on here? I ran out of the room."

Another Blow to Right-Wingers: Tea Bags for Tax Day Held Not Tax-Deductible

Oy. Please stop spamming our comments with your unfunny headlines. If TPM readers want to read your site, we'll bookmark it.

What would happen if every TPM reader who has a site constantly spammed the TPM comments, like you do?

Give it up.

Your site isn't funny in the slightest.

user-pic

Seconded.

The only impressive thing is how often he gets in with first Spam, I mean comment....

user-pic

Save your keystrokes. He doesn't even read the comments here; just posts links to the these lame-assed comics.

user-pic

OK then, time for everyone to click the link that says, "report abuse."

DonDavis probably subscribes to the RSS headline feed, so he can quickly get his spam in as the first comment.

user-pic

Don't take this as too strong a defense but the only times I see his links in individual topics they're, well, topical. In the round-up they're not always associated with any particular line item but sometimes they're pretty funny. Nobody hits a home run every time they bat.

As for not reading the site I am unsure if he does or not but I have seen him occasionally reply to comments about his cartoons.

user-pic

DD's crime is not that he's spamming; it's that his cartoons are hardly ever funny.

His posts are mercifully short, and, as CL suggested, the Roundup is essentially an open thread.  I really don't have a problem with it, and I'd hardly consider it abuse.

"But cutting spending won't be enough. Taxes matter "

Yeah, the ship is going down, get more water!

That's called opportunism.

user-pic

It's also called "being a moron".

user-pic

Supposedly there was Palin polling done in Iowa that asked if it was important if Palin ran for Governor again in 2010.

I think there is a possibility that she may not run for re-election. I mean her Presidential ambitions will be a huge issue for her during the Gubernatorial campaigning, seeing as 2010 is when the Presidential primary season starts and she'd need to be out of State a heckuva lot for the next two years of a four year term. Does Alaska have term limits for it's Governors?

Could she risk losing the election and how would that play in the Presidential primaries?

user-pic

Wow, a president who will do things that are against his own financial self-interests. About time.

user-pic

Ironically 95% of the whacko tea baggers will get a tax cut under Obama plan.

user-pic

But those tax cuts could be so much more if he wasn't spending so damn much.

user-pic

But increasing taxes on the wealthiest 5 percent is 100 percent tyranny! (Or whatever the sign held up by one of the wackos said in the TPM photo gallery.) Won't someone think of the rich people?

user-pic

That was satire from Billionaires for Bush. It's hard to tell the difference.

user-pic

And they'll think their protest will be the reason for it.

Rove: Tea Parties Show GOP Has To Stress Tax Cuts

You go, Karl - let's get the GOP identified with the "teabaggers" - the angry fringe. That's a one-way ticket to joining the Whigs.

I liked this comment, from the Wisconsin Democratic Party (DPW) - note the headline:

DPW Chair Wineke Statement on Republican Tea Bag Party
MADISON – Democratic Party of Wisconsin (DPW) Chair Joe Wineke today released the following statement regarding the Republican Tea Bag Party in Madison today.
“This Tea Bag Party was billed as a grassroots rally against taxes and spending, but when was the last time you saw a grassroots group hire 15 roadies and erect a 25-foot stadium screen?
“When you look behind the curtain, you’ll see that this so-called grassroots movement is being bankrolled by special interest groups desperately fighting to protect the Bush tax cuts for multimillionaires and big corporations.

user-pic

If all those people participating in the tea parties yesterday believe their taxes are going up, then whatever Backmann has is contagious. Obama needs to get the Center for Disease Control to develop an antidote before all rest of us sane people succumb to the same illness too.

user-pic

I checked out the TPM photo series on these 'protests'. All white (without exception). Mostly men. Mostly old.

They do not represent any America I'm familiar with.
I bet Fox is having a field day with this. Let's pretend this is the new voice of America. The movement has begun! Spin, spin, spin. Yawn.

As so many Conservatives are fond of saying .... "Freedom isn't free".

It's real easy to carry around a sign that says "No taxes". (Really?)

Any suggestions, then, how we pay for all of this?

user-pic

By cutting more taxes, of course!

user-pic

ah the teabaggers... if there's one thing republicans love it's their creation myths.

misunderstanding US political history through the piss poor rose-colored fantasies posing as civics education that we use to indoctrinate third graders is republican bread and butter.
