Obama: We Will Work With International Community To "Deliver A Strong Message" To North Korea
A reporter asked President Obama what his message was to North Korea, after today's missile launch. His response, from the White House's transcript: "We delivered it today. They, I think, have taken a provocative action. It creates instability in their region, around the world. If they want to take an appropriate path to rejoin the international community and break out of their isolation, that's available to them. That's not the path they're taking right now. And we intend to work with the international community to deliver a strong message."

Obama's Day In Prague
President Obama spent the day in Prague, meeting with Czech President Václav Klaus and Prime Minister Mirek Topolánek at 3 a.m. ET. Obama delivered a speech at 4 a.m. ET, calling for a world without nuclear weapons. He met at 5:30 a.m. ET with EU Commission President José Manuel Barroso, and then attended an EU summit working lunch. Obama met with leaders from Spain at 8:55 a.m. ET, with leaders from Poland at 10:30 a.m. ET, and with former Czech President Václav Havel at 11:10 a.m., and then left Prague for Turkey at 12 p.m. ET.

Gibbs: North Korean Launch Was Violation, Even Though Unsuccessful
Speaking to reporters today, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said the North Korean missile launch was not a success -- no stage of the rocket went into orbit, but it fell into the Pacific Ocean after passing over Japan. "Look, the launch itself was the violation, not the fact that the launch we now see was unsuccessful," said Gibbs. "It was the launch itself that was provocative and in violation of Security Council resolutions."

GM's Henderson: I Have "Several Masters"
Appearing On Meet The Press, GM's new CEO Fritz Henderson downplayed the role that the White House would have in controlling the company. "David, I report to Kent Kresa, the interim chairman of the board, the board of directors," said Henderson. "But I also have direct line into the president's task force. In fact, I have several masters."

Obama: America Can Lead In Creating World Without Nuclear Weapons
Speaking today in Prague, President Obama called for a world without nuclear weapons: "Just as we stood for freedom in the 20th century, we must stand together for the right of people everywhere to live free from fear in the 21st century. And as nuclear power -- as a nuclear power, as the only nuclear power to have used a nuclear weapon, the United States has a moral responsibility to act. We cannot succeed in this endeavor alone, but we can lead it, we can start it."

Obama Backs EU Membership For Turkey
President Obama told the EU summit today that he supports membership for Turkey: "The United States and Europe must approach Muslims as our friends, neighbors and partners in fighting injustice, intolerance and violence, forging a relationship based on mutual respect and mutual interests." French President Nicolas Sarkozy has reiterated his opposition to Turkish membership, while German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that "It's clear there are different opinions."

Axelrod: Bush Has Behaved Like Statesman -- Cheney Didn't Get Memo
Appearing on CNN's State of the Union, David Axelrod shot back at Dick Cheney's public criticism of the Obama administration: "And let me say, in contrast, how much we appreciate the way President Bush has behaved. He was incredibly cooperative during the transition. And when he left he said, 'I wish you guys the best. I'm rooting for you.' I believe that to be the case. And he's behaved like a statesman. And as I've said before, here and elsewhere, I just don't think the memo got passed down to the vice president."

Jeff Frederick Ousted As Virginia GOP Chairman
The Virginia Republican Party has ousted state Delegate Jeff Frederick from his position as state party chairman, in the wake of severe losses for the party in 2008 and accusations of mismanagement. Frederick is perhaps best known for comparing Barack Obama to Osama Bin Laden while briefing campaign volunteers on talking points for the 2008 race, and for Twittering that a Democratic state Senator was about to switch parties and give them power in the chamber -- an event that subsequently didn't happen.

Orrin Hatch and Olympia Snowe have jumped on the "Coleman should appeal as long as he wants" bandwagon.

So let me get this straight, the GOP is against reconciliation because it's gaming the system and they believe there should be legitimate vote and debate on all issues, however at the same time are freezing Franken out of taking part in these legitimate votes and debates?

Sure Coleman is working within his rights and within the system, but the Dems are not doing anything illegal or breaking any rules if they used reconciliation.

The GOP wants it both ways, they want to force the Dems to do the honorable thing, but at the same time play games with the Minnesota Senate seat out of pure politics of having the Dems have one less vote.

If the Dems had any guts they should have only agreed to take reconciliation off the table when they had their full caucus of Senators seated.

user-pic

It's called HYPOCRISY. It's what they are good at.

They shouldn't take reconciliation off the table at all. It should be the ABSOLUTE last resort. They should truly work in a bipartisan fashion to get health care passed. If things break down (probably because of a public option in any bill) and it seems a bill cannot pass we will use reconciliation. That's the right way to do it. We will work in good faith to get something passed but we won't have you stop us from bringing the change that is so deperately needed.

user-pic

I'm waiting to see if any Democrat has big enough balls to tell the repuglicans, plain and simple ... if you want to have a say in legislation and be taken serious, then get off the Coleman bandwagon and let Franken take the seat he won. I'm not holding my breath so don't expect me to turn blue anytime soon.

user-pic

Don't worry, beetlejuice..."Give 'em Hell" Harry will be all over that, with his renowned toughness.
~

user-pic

Oh my, we wouldn't want to snub a Republican simply to get a Democrat seated, now would we. That is not post-partisan at all! Be careful! You might hurt the feelings of a centrist!

user-pic

Indeed.

It seems to me it's precisely because the Senate isn't fully staffed now that reconciliation should be used, repeatedly (at least, until we have everyone seated).

The Dems should say why reconciliation is being used ("'Franken vs Coleman' has left the Senate incomplete, and we've got work to do")," over and over...

user-pic

Well said. While they're at it, why not include Obama nominees?

As in, okay. You want us to forego reconciliation? Then let Franken be seated, AND get out of the way of the confirmation process. Stop preventing them from taking up their jobs in his administration.

If you don't do all of that, we WILL use reconciliation, again and again and again.

On fox news sunday, newt the nazi advocated bombing n.korea and iran and f*ck diplomacy. Just bomb em. At the same time, he "converted" to catholicism????????? He obviously has no clue as to what catholicism stands for. What is with these right-wing loons? Unbelievable.

user-pic

Yeah. Catholicism is OK with adultery & being married three times... umm, or not so much?

Sorry, this recovering Catholic's head's spinning too fast to really get ahold of this one. I'm gonna have to have a drink until I can figure out how many ex-wives can dance on the head of a pin.

57% of Americans want military response to North Korea missile launch:

http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/current_events/general_current_events/57_want_military_response_to_north_korea_missile_launch

What's wrong with these loony Americans?

user-pic

Because it's a ratsmussen poll makes it questionable at best. I can only imagine the question asked. Also, the public is not as informed about the situation as the administration is. Bomb em and then they launch an attack on south korea. Oh, that's brilliant.

The point was that gingrich was saying forget about diplomacy just bomb them. We haven't had concerted international diplomacy with iran for over 40 years and n. korea for the last 8 years. What's wrong with giving diplomacy a chance? We haven't done any for a long time. They make is sound like diplomacy won't work, without even trying. They want to lead with their little head as opposed to their big head and that's silly.

user-pic

No, it's because it doesn't fit your argument, that's why it's questionable.

As for the "diplomacy" I'm not sure what exactly you mean:

- another eloquent statment from Obama
- toothless UN resolution
- useless UN sanctions

Maybe you mean meeting NK without preconditions?

user-pic

Oh, please. Ratsmussen has zero credibility. Give me a gallup poll on the issue. Also, you ignore the point that no active diplomacy has been done. That's the point. Active diplomacy and they keep f*cking around then you get the world behind you to bomb them if necessary.

On you "points," which aren't points at all but slams, concerning diplomacy:

1. No.
2. No. and
3. No.

Basically, none of the above. Sit down with them and the other 4 parties, talk to them one on one as well, give them some timelines and trip wires. At the same time, get the other 4 parties to agree that these are do not cross lines and start the conversation of military action, with agreement by the other parties. Also, at this point, I would be arguing with the other 4 parties for a semi-blockade requiring inspection of all vessels coming and going to n. korea. Is that enough active diplomacy for you and potential military action for you?

Bottom line is that you have to freaking communicate at a minimum and get the other neighboring countries behind the process and involved in the communications, actively. We haven't been doing that.

user-pic

Do you know how long the 6-party talks with North Korea have been going on?

Have you ever heard about the UN sanctions that are currently in effect?

Did you think about the fact that China is the ally of North Korea (and also our newest friend)?

Have you thought about Iran watching how North Korea is totally going to get away with it?

And did you even realize that North Korea fired that missile EXACTLY when Obama is talking about disarmanent?

user-pic

1. 6 party "talks", two years and what a handful of meetings and strutting like a peacock king non-diplomacy.

2. Uh, yeah, and what's your point.

3. Nah, really, china is an ally? No shit.

4. Uh, yeah, and the iranians were probably at the test. That was the point on a semi-blockade to prevent proliferation and technology going to iran. Again, and your point?

5. No, realy? You're kidding. Obama was giving a speech on getting rid of nukes and stuff like that. No shit. I didn't realize. And, what's your point? N.korea is acting like an ass, so we are supposed to just bomb the shit out of them? I think we know where that type of diplomacy has gotten us. Nowhere.

user-pic
And, what's your point?

His point is that he's a troll. Remember when he was a Hillary Clinton supporter? You think his "sudden" conversion from embittered Democrat to hard right Republican is a coincidence? He's a classic troll. He'll say whatever's necessary to get a rise out of people, because his life is so devoid of joy and meaning that he has to claw for attention on the internet. It's all just rather pathetic, and the sooner you recognize him for the joke that he is, the sooner you can stop treating this loser like he deserves the slightest scrap of respect.

user-pic

Yeah, I remember. I got off track. I should have ignored the absurdity. Thanks for reminding me.

user-pic

Hmmm, let's see...

I guess this troll managed to rub you the wrong way, 5 responses and each but a footnote about Rasmussen and me.

But hey Bruno, if you don't like what I say, you can stop reading or go find yourself another blog.

user-pic
Have you thought about Iran watching how North Korea is totally going to get away with it?

Oh man, you're bringing up this argument again. L-O-L. Yeah dude, invading Iraq totally deterred Iran and North Korea.

Do you have meet a specific threshold of stupidity to be a member of the Republican Party?

user-pic

I guess it didn't. Let see how saying "Please Could You Stop" multiple times is going to work for NK.

user-pic

Who's saying that? I didn't and obama hasn't. The only ones saying that as far as I can tell are republicans. Please stop? Give me a break.

user-pic

I haven't heard Obama talk about semi-blocade. Have you?

user-pic

1. No.

2. Give it time. He has a ton of shit on his plate from the clinton nightmare and the king's years. I bet you we see it in short order.

3. I haven't heard him or any dem say "please stop." I have only heard that from republicans with their saber rattling bullshit. Please stop or we will bomb your ass, for what, 8 years now? You actually think they believe that? I wouldn't.

user-pic

You bet? It's on.

user-pic

Huh? I'm betting what? Your posts are trite and childish. Go back to hillaryis44.com. You will like it there.

user-pic

Yes, diplomacy won't give everyone a unicorn therefore we should wage a costly war that would put several close allies in peril! This is the kind of brilliant thinking that led to that permanent Republican majority!

LOL!

user-pic

It surely would give you more than one.

user-pic

The problem is that, like all of Rasmussen's policy surveys, the question was either full of loaded language or wasn't clear to a layman:

If North Korea launches a long-range missile, should the United States take military action to eliminate North Korea’s ability to launch missiles?

A lot of respondents probably interpreted this as a long range missile launched at the US.

Of course, unlike my fellow Dems, I love Rasmussen, because it encourages the GOP to embrace completely untenable positions. So keep pushing for war with North Korea, Lalo, I'm looking to add at least 5 Senate seats in 2010. :)

user-pic

Specifically, if the question had been:

Should the US take military action against North Korea now?

you would almost certainly get a drastically different response. Of course, Scotty knows how to insert the right ambiguities and loaded terms into his questions. Then again, as President John McCain would tell you, Americans overwhelmingly support GOP policies!

user-pic

Rasmussen is a very conservative polling group. They were way off on the election and generally an outlier with these sorts of things.

That said, I hope the American people are too smart for yet another war. In these economic times? Aside from the likely loss of life (which is the paramount concern), do they really want another trillion dollars (or more) wasted on another endless military engagement?

The military-industrial complex would cheer this on, of course. But it would be horrifically bad for the world. I hope Obama has put an end to the Bush program of generals going on the tube and acting like neutral experts, while being paid by the government (and their corporate masters) to push for war and more war.

user-pic

Democrats should embrace Rasmussen, as he encourages the GOP not to moderate their extremist positions. Advocating for a costly war with North Korea would be a good way to secure a Democratic supermajority in 2010, so I'm all for the Pubbies flogging Scotty's magic polls until the harsh reality kicks them in the balls (again).

user-pic

Okay. Now I'm beginning to see what Obama is up to. He's not into making the world a nuke-free zone ... he's taking the only weapon in the arsenal the repuglicans think is their big stick to use to beat up the rest of the world with. Without nukes to toss about indiscriminately when they get a hard-on, they'll have to start playing fair and being nice for a change.

user-pic

He's running for President, Michael A, like I argued on my TPM blog. http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/blogs/mare_nostrum/

He can pull money from fat cats cause they like him, but to get them to invest, he wants to show them he can also appeal to the all-important Talibangelicals, Xenophobes, and Extreme Nitwits that make up the backbone of the party (not to mention Racists). He much needs these horse's asses to get past Palin and Huckabee in a primary.

user-pic

Pls. see my other reply to you below. If Gingrich can get good support in the party's imbecilic base in 2012, there are a lot of Catholic one-issue voters out there who would vote for most any nitwit who winked at Catholicism and *deplored abortion.* This is what Gingrich means when he talks about "building a majority," i.e., assembling a voting coalition of low-information voters/dumbasses. He's in, statements like these latest only confirm it.

user-pic

I really, really despise this nazi. He really qualifies as far as I am concerned for the label. He is so slick and sounds "good", but his policies are atrocious. Also, "family values"? He is a total pig. Then on top of that he "converts" to catholicism? I almost threw up when I heard that one. Catholic? That's beyond offensive. The guy can convert to buddism and he will still rot in hell for his conduct. Catholicism? I still can't believe it.

user-pic

The headline of the day should be this, "The policy of the United States of America is Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons."

Ok, I dvr'd meet the republican hack and am watching it now. Why is david "I love the republican non-agenda" gregory on meet the hack? He should go to faux news. He is pathetically delusional and quite frankly nuts. Go to faux news gregory and exist where you will be wanted. Pathetic.

user-pic

I haven't watched Meet the Press since Gregory got the job. Has anybody heard how high his ratings are?
