Pelosi: This Is Astroturf, Not Grassroots Protest

She probably won't wake conservatives up to the men behind the curtain, but House Speaker Nancy Pelosi understands a thing or two about the Tea Party Protests.

An interviewer at Fox TV in San Francisco said "thousands of Americans...are having a tax and tea party today saying that we're taxing and spending our way into oblivion."

Pelosi responded:

"....What they want is a continuation of the failed economic policies of President George Bush which got us in the situation we are in now."

What we want is a new direction. In fact, in the President's initiative - in the Recovery and in the Budget - 95% of the American people get a tax cut. This is a tax cut for the great middle class. This initiative is funded by the high end - we call call it astroturf, it's not really a grassroots movement. It's astroturf by some of the wealthiest people in America to keep the focus on tax cuts for the rich instead of for the great middle class.

Pelosi probably knows a thing or two about the difference. In March 20, 2003, the day after President George W. Bush invaded Iraq, thousands of people participated in a real protest (i.e. no cash rewards) in San Francisco, largely shutting down her district and, in many cases, winding in jail.

To put a finer point on it, though, Pelosi released a statement today to make a point that's been lost amidst all the teabag coverage. "Millions of Americans will see their taxes cut this year thanks to the economic plan of the New Direction Congress and President Obama," Pelosi said. "We enacted the fastest tax cut in history--the Making Work Pay Tax Credit--that workers are already seeing in their paychecks."

Nancy also talks from the side of her mouth or from across the aisle on occasion. Where does she stand today? Wondering.

user-pic

She's certainly not perfect (who is?), but she's by some distance the best we've got in the Congressional leadership.

user-pic

Those who demand ideological purity in their politics, on the left or right, are losers.

user-pic

Wait, so the only "real" grassroots in the country are the liberal ones? Yeah, pull the other one, Nance. It's got bells on.

user-pic

You really don't know the difference between grassroots and astroturfing? One comes from the people. The other comes from FreedomWorks.

It's hard to put words in Pelosi's mouth when the video is right there for everyone to see, eh?

user-pic

Oooh! You're drinking Kool-Aid? What flavor?

I don't buy that the only "real" middle America agrees with Pelosi-style politics, and I'm not impressed that you do.

user-pic

you aren't make any sense.

there are plenty examples of right wing grassroots organizing. but these teabagging parties aren't one of them.

there's also a fair amount of left-wing astroturf out there.

that this teabagging bs is astroturf organizing has nothing to do with it being right-wing organizing.

user-pic

It is a fact, not opinion, that this movement was manufactured. Fox News organized it. Period.

You can have your own opinion that water is not wet, but it doesn't change the facts. And you yourself look really foolish with your posts on here, BTW.

We already held a protest/revolution at the voting booth in November. This Astroturf protest is just sour grapes because they lost. And they will lose again in 2010 if they continue to cater to these far right wingnuts who are out there today putting on a show.

user-pic

Exactly. I seem to remember 70,000 and more turning up to hear Senator Obama speak at places across the nation -- from Blue Oregon to Red Missouri. The fact that they can get literally hundreds of Fox News fans to show up for an anti-Obama protest is meaningless.

Oh, and let's dispense with any pretense this is about taxes or the deficit. If McCain had won and done exactly the same things there would not be a peep of protest from the Republican Party propoganda machine (Fox, Rush, etc.), and no "tea parties". There is a reason that all the faces at these protests are lily white.

It's more about their hate for a black man than it is anything else and the rest of it is sheeples doing the dirty work of the rich. Talk about stuck on stupid!!!

And to Theswan. You coudn't wipe Nancy Pelosi's butt - you aren't even worth the toilet paper it would take to do so.

This really isn't that kind of a blog. Strong feelings are one thing, crude references are another. Ick.

I got my paycheck today and it was for more than usual. I had to check my pay stub to see what happened. I knew it wasn't a raise, not in this economy (thanks Bush & Wall Street). Nope, not a raise, I'm just paying less in federal income tax now. I bet in the next few days many others will have the same pleasant surprise.

Either the people at these "tea parties" are really rich and liars or really stupid and oblivious (all signs point to stupid).

I think, more than Astroturf, and much more than Grass, these people remind me of mushrooms - they prefer to be kept in the dark and fed loads of bull sh*t.

How little our Tax paying citizens actually understand - tax cut and tax deferred are not the same. Nothing was cut - the tax laws were not revised, they were deferred. It won't effec me but in 2010 tax reductions are eliminated. With deficits proposed in the trillions what seems deferred now will swallow every wage earner making $40M+. why are we not working to provide insight and solutions? Government should not be trying to control everything - take the emotion out of the discussion and we all have to know that, right?

user-pic

How is a $400 tax credit not a tax cut? To be exact I could have said "less of my paycheck is being withheld to pay federal income tax because of the $400 tax credit included in the 'American Recovery and Reinvestment Act'", but my lack of detail hardly detracts from my point, which I suppose I'll take this opportunity to expand upon and make more clear: 1) Less of these people's money is going to the federal government under President Obama. 2) These people were able to vote on election day. Therefore it is illogical to protest "Taxation without representation" when they are represented in government and they are paying less in taxes than they previously had been.

user-pic

What i find the funny about this is that they have no clear thing to protest, you look at what they are saying and its all over the place.

user-pic

You guys generally do a great job, but funny as it is I think you overcovered this whole teabag thing. Let the Fox Fringe just play with themselves; they really don't need the rest of us watching.

user-pic

Lets just say Nancy is made of astroturf. When it burns it sets up a beautiful smoke screen.
