Poll: Obama Ahead Of Gingrich, Huckabee, Palin And Romney In 2012 Matchups

A new national survey from Public Policy Polling (D), already looking forward to 2012, shows President Obama ahead of four potential Republican opponents.

Obama leads Newt Gingrich 52%-39%; he's ahead of Mike Huckabee 49%-42%; he beats Sarah Palin 53%-41%; and he leads Mitt Romney 50%-39%.

"Barack Obama might not have the same overwhelming approval rating he did in the earlier days of his administration," PPP president Dean Debnam said in the polling memo. "But he's certainly still more popular than any of the major Republican figures in the country."

41 percent of those polled would vote for Sarah Palin over President Obama???? That's downright scary.

user-pic

And the undecided will break for the incumbent, meaning in every case Obama would be at or around 57%.

user-pic

Say it ain't so, Eric....A poll??!!!

user-pic

Two words: twelve step.

user-pic

I'm surprised the matchup between Obama and Huckabee is so close.

user-pic

The margin of error is also +/-3.7 percent which means that essentially all of the match-ups are statistically the same margins.

And why oh why does TPM *still* continue to ignore the margin of error when referring to any poll???

user-pic

This polling is way too early.

Obama's opponent will probably get around 40% of the vote regardless.

user-pic

We know that there are some people who pay very little attention to politics, so they are not reading about Sarah's current antics (e.g. her petty, vindictive, incompetent non-governing). But, if Sarah is the republican nominee, after the first presidential debate when that group gets a chance to really hear her non-answers to questions, her support will drop among all but her hardcore "base." And you cant win anything with just the hardcore base.

user-pic

The problem with people like Gingrich and Romney is that they just are NOT likeable.

Palin will never get more than 45% of the vote because she just is too polarizing.

Huckabee is likeable and is less polarzing.

However, the bottom line is unless Obama totally tanks it will be difficult to beat him in 2012 because Obama has the BEST organization around.

If one follows the money gathering abilities . . . Eric Cantor is shaping up to be strongest potential REP Presidential Candidate in 2012.

user-pic

That's pretty depressing for the GOP.

user-pic

Watching Eric Kantor speak is like looking into the Void.

user-pic

Cantor always looks like he can't wait to get back to his office to tear the wings off the fly he's got pinned down.

user-pic

If it comes down to money, mine's on Mittens. He's Daniel Plainview to Cantor's Eli Sunday.

This is all I have to say:

user-pic

That was nice.

Geez, he has aged already, hasn't he?

user-pic

Yeah, he is going gray fast. Just the campaign alone would have killed most of us. And then he won the booby prize.

user-pic

Lord help us: a 2012 poll already? This early in the going, I would have expected bigger numbers for President Obama. It is somewhat reassuring that he slams both Gingrich and Palin.

user-pic

The poll numbers are wrong Mitt Romney or Sarah Palin will beat Barack Obama in 2012

user-pic

Can I get a hit of whatever you're smokin?

user-pic

You betcha. And also too. We're all going to get multicolored unity ponies in the mail in 2012 as well!

user-pic

This is GREAT NEWS! For John McCain!

1. This is WWWWAAAAAAYYYYY too early to do 2012 polling.

2. Whoever wins the Republican nomination is going to get at least 40% of the popular vote. There are many parts of this country, especially in the South, Midwest and Rocky Mountains, that are going to vote for the Republican nominee no matter how many questions they have. Even if, say, Oklahomans find Sarah Palin too out there or Romney to be too liberal socially or Huck to be too liberal fiscally, they're is no way in hell they're voting for Obama.

3. I still say it really doesn't matter who the Republicans run in 2012. If the economy improves and Obama stays out of trouble, he'll win re-election without much drama. If one of those two things doesn't happen, he's in deep you-know-what.

user-pic

Yeah, but its never too early for a pollster to try to pump up its brand recogntion among the politcal consultant class that pay for polls in election years by running a meaningless survey and getting it into the news sources the consultants favor.

user-pic

the american people and thus its politics are a sorry state of affairs.

the truth is ANY republican can get 40% just for running.

like the fact that on tv the show that follows a popular show retains over 70% of its audience simply because the people wont change the channel!!!!

i could get 40 %...????..LOL

user-pic

It is absolutely chilling to realize that anywhere near half of walking talking Americans would put our country and the fate of the world in the hands of Palin, or Gingrich, or Mittens.

What the hell is wrong with being smart and using facts? What part of a functioning brain shuts down when people make these decisions? I really think there needs to be a LOT more research into why people believe and vote with such complete stupidity. There was some evidence that right wing thinkers are also much more racist thinkers but I would love to see a real attempt to pinpoint some of the personality traits that lead to such blatant stupidity.

Obama vs Palin? what the hell is really going on here????
