Right-Wing Extremist Congresswoman Denounces Attacks Against Right-Wing Extremists

The recent Department of Homeland Security report, which attracted so much criticism on the right for its warnings about domestic right-wing extremists, has another big-time detractor: Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN).

Bachmann took to the House floor on Wednesday night, delivering an impassioned speech about the government tagging decent Americans as extremists for being pro-life, pro-gun rights and anti-illegal immigration -- and asking whether Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano has gone "absolutely stark raving mad":

There's no doubt that Bachmann has a genuine stake in this argument. For one thing, she is staunchly pro-life. She is also in favor of gun rights, and wants to secure the borders. Oh, and she's called for revolution against President Obama's tyranny and Marxism.

"Stark raving mad"? Takes one to know one, as they say. . .

Any word on how many more Republicans have signed on to her currency bill?

user-pic

Yeah, I was going to say. She may be suggesting DHS is horning in on her territory. To the extent she can be said to be suggesting anything coherent at all.

user-pic

That woman has absolutely no self-awareness. She throws out terms like socialist, and marxist, but then herself takes extreme offense when the word "extremist" is used against her.

I wish somebody would have challenged her on that.

user-pic

No self-awareness? HA! She's Ann Coulter in Congress. It's an act. So here and everywhere else she gets tons of very free publicity. Meanwhile, hard-working liberals get none.

user-pic

Ms. Bachmann clearly needs some professional medical help. Delusions can inflict self-abuse (may be good in her case) and lead to irrational acts...Hummm..sounds like her already !!

I'll bet the people she represents are real proud of her....If they really are, I'm outta here !!

user-pic

I love the conjunction of pro-life, gun owners. Hmmm?

user-pic

Good one.

user-pic

If a firearm was somehow used as a tool to perform an abortion, they'd be conflicted. Even more so if the doctor had skin that was any darker than beige.

user-pic

Did she mention how the TSA is going to identify those "pro-life, pro-gun rights, anti-immigration" people?

I mean, do they have the mark of the devil on them?

Or maybe they'll be able to tell by the AK-47's they're packing?

Inquiring minds want to know.

user-pic

I guess you can tell who they are because the wrap themselves in the flag accessorize themselves with crosses?

user-pic

Nah, the AK47's are the dead giveaway. How many airline passengers do you see carrying those? Ok, make that, how many airline passengers do you see, wearing a confederate battle flag wrapped around them, carrying those? I can count the number I have seen on two hands.

user-pic

I'm just trying to figure out-- is profiling bad now, then? Or is it only bad as long as the "right" wrong people are getting profiled?

user-pic

"Smaller government?" Let's start with your removal from public life, you freaking jackass.

user-pic

We need to watch this carefully. If Obama caves in on this one, it's all but over. The Republicans will keep rolling him and rolling him and rolling him.

This has got to be one of the most bizarre "outrages" in recent history. The DHS report, started under Bush's watch, is talking about violent right wing extremists, who may want to commit terrorist acts. No where in the document -- I scanned it -- does it mention the word "conservative". No where does it impugn anyone in Talk Radio or on TV. It simply is an assessment by the DHS regarding very, very real dangers from right wing militias and their ilk.

If Napolitano goes down for this, or if she fires anyone as a result of loony right wing paranoid pressure . . . . we are in very real trouble as a nation.

Apparently, to conservatives, it's only outrageous if far right wingnut groups are under surveillance. They never had any problem with Quakers for peace, students for peace, antiwar rallies in general, being spied on, etc.

Unbelievable. What has happened to this country?

user-pic

Big picture / forest for the trees view:

Minnesota's 6th District may love her (and Sarah Palin, presumably), but most independents across the country will not, and will continue to vote Dem in revulsion, as they did in 2006 and 2008.

user-pic

I love Bachmann and people like her, people like Steve King of Iowa, Marsha Blackburn of Tenn., Newt Gingrich, Dick Cheney, etc. Everytime they open their mouth we get 10 more voters.

user-pic

Blackburn tried to claim that Al Gore is only interested in climate change for the money he can make from it.
He does not personally profit from his investment in Kleiner Perkins.
I thought the GOP was all about free enterprise.
Apparently only GOOPers are allowed to profit from anything.
More chaff for the heat-seeking 24 hour news missiles at Fox.

user-pic

They constantly apply the circular logic that if someone is expert enough to write a book on a topic, their opinion can't be trusted because they're just trying to make money off their book. This BS is no different.

user-pic

To make a handsome profit off a subject you champion in Congress is called the IOAIYAAR rule - It Only Applies If You Are A Repuglican. Democrats aren't allowed.

user-pic

She really thrives on the self-pity stuff. She and those like her are the victims. The part that really sets her apart from the other wing-nuts is that when she can't find enough real things that are being done to repress her people, she just makes stuff up.

user-pic

Well the hardest part for someone like her when they climb up on their own crosses is getting the last nail in by themselves.

user-pic

Having volunteered for habitat for humanity, I learned satisfying it can be to hammer in nails for the public good. It'd be my pleasure to help out Ms Bachmann with that last nail.

user-pic

Why is it we never heard of her rantings until Obama was elected? Sounds like her inner voice is a tad bit xenophobic all of a sudden - just as the repuglican base is too.

user-pic

But she does it with such conviction.

user-pic

I guess you can tell who they are because the wrap themselves in the flag accessorize themselves with crosses?

user-pic

I would be surprised if that DHS report did not mention Rep Bachmann specifically by name as a potential threat to natl security

user-pic

If it doesn't, It really needs to be editted

user-pic

What's ironic about the both of you saying that is that it somewhat mimics Bachmann's own rhetoric during the election wherein she called for investigations of members of Congress (Democrats, obviously). Don't get me wrong - Bachmann is a lunatic, and as a native Minnesotan I am particularly appalled by her.

But when you start saying Bachmann is a threat to national security (even partially in jest as may be the case) you fall into the exact same bs rhetoric that the right has been using since 1949 or so. Bachmann is incoherent, idiotic, and a threat to no one but her own party. Suggesting that she should be investigated in some fashion just provides more grist for her crazy-nonsense mill (though admittedly she seems to find enough grist for that all by herself).

user-pic

Gimme a break, pal.

Firstly, i was *partially* joking.

Secondly, she has called for actual ARMED REVOLUTION and VIOLENCE against Obama and federal government.

Seems to me, that WOULD be cause for investigation and scrutiny.

That is known as incitement and is NOT protected by the 1st amendment:

"The constitutional guarantees of free speech and free press do not permit a State to proscribe advocacy of the use of law violation except where such advocacy is directed to inciting or producing imminent lawless action and is likely to incite or produce such action."

user-pic

Don't forget about the McCarthy era, when peoples lives and carrers were ruined by the likes of Bachmann.

user-pic

I am sure the next thing will be that at the Obama's concentration camps Pro gun pro life and pro loonies will have bar code tats to limit their travel

user-pic

This woman is not stupid. Crazy maybe, but not stupid. Every time she opens her mouth she gets loads of publicity. Like they say, I don't care what you say about me in the paper, just as long as you spell my name right.

user-pic

Once more Bachmann's mouth puts Democratic turnout and support into overdrive. She is beyond Wacko. The Report cited essentially parallels the findings of the Southern Poverty Law Center studies on growth of extremism. And most of us can remember the militia movement and McVeigh and Nicholls who met in the service--it doesn't say that all veterans are this way, just that they are being targeted by the right.

user-pic

I am ready and willing to donate, donate, donate to her opponent. I hope we all do when the time comes. Send her sorry ass packing back to St. Paul with all the rest of the creeps

user-pic

It's the fairness doctrine all over again, and Bachmann isn't crazy, but evil. She's trying to preempt any light being focused upon right-wing extremists in this country. We shouldn't fall all over ourselves to disavow law enforcement practices that may be perfectly legitimate.

I would prefer that we didn't have profiling at airports. It seems to me that, if there's some post-9/11 consensus that liberties must be curtailed to avoid a repeat, then in a democracy we should all partake equally of the inconvenience and indignity.

But if we must have no-fly lists, and tiers of scrutiny based solely upon demographics, profiling, and associations, then there's no reason that domestic right-wing separatists should be exempt from the same treatment.

user-pic

Transportation Security Association? LOL

This woman is pure entertainment.

user-pic

If you'd like to write Representative Bachmann and tell her how much you appreciate her comedy stylings here's her email page:

http://bachmann.house.gov/Contact/ZipCode.htm

You can plug in either of these zip code addresses from her website: 55125 or 56387

user-pic

Has she been a guest on SNL yet? If not, she should be!

user-pic

Here's a suggestion from a Minnesotan. Prior to the proposed Texas Secession, can we trade Minnesota's 6th District for Texas's 25th?

Minnesota would get Austin, good music and better mexican food. Texas would get much needed water resources like the upper Missisppi and St Croix Rivers.

Their liberals for our crazies. Everyone will be happier. Its totally win-win.

user-pic

How dare the DHS come to the conclusion that veterans trained in armed combat and steeped in patriotism could be the targets of domestic terror groups! Don't they know that the OKC bombing and clinic bombings occurred in a vacuum?!

user-pic

OMG, you mean TSA might ... start PROFILING? Just curious: What does a pro-life gun owner look like?

user-pic

Ms. Bachmann has the approximate IQ of a teapot. When she gets warmed up she makes a shrill noise. Minnesota, please take her off the stove.

user-pic

She's smart like a fox. She's the distraction. She makes extremism entertaining. By making extremism entertaining, she makes anyone concerned about real extremism appear to be a fuddy who doesn't get the joke. People don't even listen when they hear the real thing because they've had the parodies drilled into them for so long that they've long since lost any connection to how unfunny far-right thugs are.

user-pic

Again, this is too bizarre.

All of the adults have left the GOP. They have nothing but spoiled, petulant, ignorant children left.

Trouble is, there are many childish adults left in America to keep voting these crazies in. And the Media is stacked with them as well. Mary Matalin just got a gig with CNN.

The pressure from the right is relentless in America. Even though Obama won the election, and the Dems control Congress, I am not sanguine about our political direction. The Dems are just not very good at standing up tall and strong as the majority or minority these days.

America needs progressive government, desperately. It isn't getting that right now, and may never get it.

user-pic

She needs to turn up the crazy if she wants to keep up. The Savage Weiner has gone so far as to file a lawsuit against Napolitano and Holder over the issue.

user-pic

I'm telling you, these folks are trying to out-crazy each other and a few of them, like Bachmann and Steele really are pathological.

user-pic

Nobody could have predicted that Republicans wouldn't give a shit about innocent citizens placed on no-fly lists and otherwise oppressed by the Bush police state bureaucracy, until the day a Democrat was elected to the White House.

user-pic

But GOP Operative Phil Musser can tell who a terrorist is just by looking at him (http://tpmtv.talkingpointsmemo.com/?id=2409648), so Michelle needn't worry. Maybe he can train TSA people to be pre-cogs who only detain non-republicans.
She's OK with Wayne Slater, the author of "Bush's Brain", being on the TSA no-fly list because he pissed off Karl and W, right?

user-pic

Heh. Maybe she saw Minority Report and thought that since they are in the minority now and all she just went with it.

user-pic

Why do pro-lifers need guns?

user-pic

They're pro-life only for the unborn so pro-choicers are fair game.

user-pic

A quote from the future:
"Buchanan and Bachmann (BnB) in 2012, because you can't get any more right than us."

user-pic

I can't decide if she's extremism in the defense of insanity or insanity in the defense of extremism. However with Steve King, Rush,Ann Coulter, Sean Hannity and Palin in the flock of loons , she's really not sui generis.

user-pic

In your guts
you know she's nuts

user-pic

That's funny but I don't think she's nuts. I think she is as cynical as they come - like Ann Coulter.

What's sad is that evidently she believes this shit plays well with her constituents (or at least, those who gave her their votes), and that she will gain brownie points from the GOP establishment for selling this kind of crazy.

user-pic

is it 2010 yet?

user-pic

To Bachmann's rant, I have just this to say: Timothy McVeigh, Terry Nichols, Michael Fortier. Oklahoma City, 168 dead, 800 injured. Second largest terrorist attack on American soil in US history.

Danger to American citizens does not come exclusively from people born outside the US border.

user-pic

Wow. I never would have thought of doing that, but kinda dig the idea of making Fright-Wingâ„¢ lunatics trip through airport security even more laborious and pain-in-the-ass than it already is. Thanks for the suggestion Michelle you whack-a-doodle lil' minx you.

user-pic

Maybe Michele Bachmann really is a terrorist?

Don't worry: She hates us for our freedom.

user-pic

I hate to say this, but I knew back when Republicans were torturing Lefties, that if the shoe were ever on the other foot (and I do NOT quite equate what Dems do in control to what Repubs did when they were in control)

That Righties would fight harder and possibly more effectively for their batshit stupid ideas than Lefties ever fought for the truth.

As far as our Senators and Reps.....and making some allowance for Feingold, Waxman, Leahy, and a few others....rightwinger fight harder and more vocally for their stupid side of things than Lefties fought the last 8 years. I have been sickened by how the Corporate and Wingnut Right have steamrolled us....and we have truth and honor on our side, most of the time. The Right, with the immense help of the media, never lets a shot go unanswered and has fought longer and harder for idiot ideas and policies than the left fights for it;s ideals. Even when we are in power, we get steamrolled and all our initiatives get watered down and thwarted and railroaded.

Just look at how we are doing on wiretaps, torture, health care, etc....

user-pic

That was a rambling rant. What I should have said is that Bachmann is at least fighting persecution (even perceived persecution)....which the Dems never did while they were being persecuted. Dems rolled over when out of power, and are only slightly more resistant when IN POWER.

Obama can't do it alone, and all indications show he isn't inclined to anyways. Health care, spying, torture, accountability....we need 100% change. Slightly altering our trajectory off the cliff is still going off the cliff. I liked the post out on the TPM mainpage from the reader who said Obama is either going to lance the painful boils that need lancing....or he is going to do some half-measure and just try to put salve on it and hope it goes away. And it appears he is not going to go the necessary distance, lance the boils.

user-pic

I, for one, might feel safer flying if we WERE checking out right wing folk before getting on planes.

user-pic

I would guess Timothy McVeigh fits no current cops' profile. Grow his hair out long, give him a beard and put a peace sign on the back bumper of his rental truck, maybe they'd have caught him before he could commit his awful act of terror.

No wonder McVeigh would have never been profiled, he looked like most rookie cops shortly after they get their badge, buzz-cut, clean-shaven, boy-faced and packin' heat.

SO what do we do when the really dangerous characters all look like cops?

user-pic

Can't anybody shut this woman up? Looks like the constant Botox treatments have turned her into a shrill crazy shrew!

user-pic

Really, is that what Ms. Napolitano said, that pro-life, pro-gun rights, anti-immigration people were right wing extremists? Or did Bachmann just identify the subgroup for us? Get this woman out of our government and under medical observation.

user-pic

No one seems to get it here, and Linda's comment,"Or did Bachmann just identify the subgroup for us?" is the best evidence.

THE WINGNUT, SECESSIONIST, PSEUDO-PATRIOTIC, GUNSTROKERS SHE DEFENDS A R E (R) HER BASE! THERE IS ACTUALLY A WELL-ESTABLISHED CLASS OF CRAZIES IN THE NORTHERN STATES THAT WAVES THE STARS AND BARS AS IF THEIR ANCESTORS NEVER FOUGHT FOR THE UNION IN THE CIVIL WAR!

Same with St. Sarah and the Palinites. These WOMEN are speaking for a small minority of powerful reactionaries who have sequestered themselves into isolated pockets of both geographic and neighborhood "clubs" and actually consider those ideological enclaves to represent the true national majority.

They have so isolated themselves from the real world, most notably by watching ONLY Fox News and listening with unfettered dittodensity to The Lump, that they actually believe the rest of the world is crazy and they are sane.

If they weren't prone to violence and inhabited by most everyone who has ever been fairly labeled a bully, it might not be so desperate. But these people for whom Bachman and Plin speak aren't very good at losing, so their propensity for vindictive "slash and burn" is proving what sore losers they really are.

Beware the cornered beast. Especially when it is mortally wounded.

user-pic

Bachmann's real worry is that the TSA will begin to focus extra scrutiny on blowhard lunatics which will inevitably result in her being strip searched, at least, every time she goes anywhere near an airport.

user-pic

Where's shooter? Shouldn't he be here to stand up for his side??

-- ARG

user-pic

Here's something to consider, Teddy Kennedy was repeatedly singled out for TSA airport searches earlier in the decade. Everybody named Dave Nelson wound up on the no fly list at one point I guess because someone named Dave Nelson was considered a suspect. Many attractive women have complained about arbitrary airport searches that seem to be conducted more as an opportunity for molestation by TSA employees than any serious attempt to stop an attack. A whole lot of people branded as protesters or agitators of one type or another weren't allowed to fly to NYC or Philly prior to the Republican conventions.

Bachmann may be concerned that behavior she and her ilk used to snicker about in private is now in store for her. Frankly if she, Rick Perry, or Dick Cheney ever fly commercial they ought to be detained in a small room for 8 hours with no explanation, a sneering disregard for their rights, and interrogated thoroughly. Then they ought to be booted out of the airport. Advocating revolution, secession and breaking American laws are more than ample reasons to deny these folks air travel.

user-pic

They are like that because they project too much.

user-pic

If they have graduated at least grammar school, they shoud be embarrassed.

user-pic

Palin-Nugent - Guns'n'Babies Party in 2012!

user-pic

OOOOOH! I like that one.

Lets keep this one on a back burner and bring it back for consideration sometime in late 2011. It might prove worth promoting just to see how many of their mutual "base" joins in the joke unaware.

"The Dead-Moose Party?"

They could use Bullwinkle as their mascot, with his tongue hanging out and little x's over each eye.

user-pic

I don't see why Bachmann is so gung ho about the right to bear arms. All she seems to do with hers is shoot herself in the foot.

user-pic

There seems to be a tendency on the right to connect-the-dots in very broad ways (although the left is by no means immune from this-- "9-11 Was An Inside Job" comes to mind).

For example, the insistence that "Bill Ayers is a close personal friend of Obama" despite any hard evidence. Or better, "Bill Ayers ghost-wrote Obama's book", or the latest red-meat-rumor: "noted communist Frank Davis Marshal is Obama's REAL father" [or surrogate father in some screeds]. They come up with preposterous ideas that justify their rage at being out of power and inflame the hardcore part of their base.

This is exactly what Bachmann is doing here: connecting random dots to paint the picture she wants us to see. There is little doubt that there ARE right-wing extremists bent on assassinating Obama (there were two foiled attempts before he was even elected), and this is what Napolitano was addressing, but Bachmann has twisted this into ALL "pro-life, gun-owning, veterans, in favor of smaller government" are defined as terrorists. The report doesn't say that at all (in fact the way Bachmann phrases it you'd think she was quoting the report).

The right-wing blow-hards have a long history with this kind of logic: Limbaugh claims that "racism is the exclusive province of the left" (I guess we voted for Obama because he is black and for no other reason) or O'Reilly putting words in Jeremy Glick's mouth, or Glenn Beck (. . . where to begin?)

Remember all the evidence Cheney had that showed Iraq was not only buying uranium from Niger, but that Al Quaeda was affiliated with Saddam Hussein? You can connect the dots any way you like when you already know what the picture is SUPPOSED to be.

user-pic

to mans_best_friend. How do you know she's not stupid. If you heard her rant on carbon dioxide you might change your mind. No "smart" person I know would have said what she did knowing it was totally false.

Unless you know her IQ score, don't be so sure.

Facebook

Once more Bachmann's mouth puts Democratic turnout and support into overdrive. She is beyond Wacko. The Report cited essentially parallels the findings of the Southern Poverty Law Center studies on growth of extremism. And most of us can remember the militia movement and McVeigh and Nicholls who met in the service--it doesn't say that all veterans are this way, just that they are being targeted by the right.
