Steele Laughs Off Recession: "The Malls Are Just As Packed" (No, They Aren't)
Michael Steele is at it again -- this time denying that there's a severe economic crisis going on, while guest-hosting Bill Bennett's radio show, and laughing about it:
After a caller said he didn't see anybody spending less money than usual, Steele replied: "I've heard a number of people say that across the country. [LAUGHTER] The malls are just as packed on Saturday. [LAUGHTER]"
In fact, according to market research, malls have been losing stores at an increased rate, as the consumer base has gone down.

Yeah, I don't know why everyone thinks there's an unemployment problem. After all, I still have a job.

Although Michael Steele may not have one for much longer.

Personally, I hope he remains employed. I like Michael Steele right where he is: representing the GOP and making them look ridiculous in the eyes of normal, rational people.

Who do you think I am going to believe? Your "facts" and your "data"? Or Michael Steele's highly trained eyes?

Facts and data. Another name for atheism.

No doubt he hasn't actually visited a mall. The malls here in the Pittsburgh area are not "packed". Those who are visiting the malls don't seem to be carrying too many packages when they leave. However, the proof is in the pudding, and it would be interesting if anyone can find some stats on the sales figures for traditional mall stores.

Is this the new strategy for the GOP? Didn't Eric Cantor accuse the Dems of overreacting to the economic crisis?

There was no depression. Hoover had the right approach--do nothing-- FDR had it all wrong.
Nowadays, the malls are crowded, girls are getting flashed and mall cops are our true heroes.
Republicans will say anything--including flashing themselves before religious school girls.

The GOP often prefers unverified anecdotes instead of verified statistics.
If the economy turns around, the repugs will claim that if we froze spending and instituted tax cuts the economy would have recovered faster with less cost. And then of course, if the economy tanks, then their plan would have been the way to go all along. This is GOP political due diligence -- planning spin for all outcomes. Because no matter what happens they will have been right or more right.

At the risk of adding an "unverified ancedote," as lizbensky critiqued above, Steele hasn't been to Tysons Corner Center in Northern VA, the reputed recession-proof mall. I have been there a couple or so Saturday mornings in the last six-eight weeks and it certainly appears there is less traffic. I almost always park in one particluar area and there have definitely been less vehicles--and this includes at least one Saturday when there were several sales going on.

Some mall stores are probably just as crowded.
The ones where they're the only store still in business.
