Steele On Specter's Switch: "I'm Sure His Mama Didn't Raise Him This Way"

Earlier in the afternoon today, Michael Steele appeared on CNN and was asked whether he was surprised about the developments with Arlen Specter.

"No I'm not, to be honest with you I had a feeling," said Steele. "Sen. Specter had very few options at this point. He had stepped on the toes of many Republicans with his vote on the stimulus bill, which is a core principle in terms of our views on economics."

In the course of the interview, Steele elaborated on his displeasure with Specter for having betrayed Republicans who'd supported him in the past.

"For the senator to flip the bird back to Senator Cornyn and the Republican Senate Leadership, a team that stood by him, who went to the bat for him in 2004, to save his hide is not only disrespectful but down right rude," said Steele. "I'm sure his mama didn't raise him this way."

I bet Sen. Snowe and Sen. Collins feel right at home given the continuance of these remarks from Steele, as well as others from other GOP bigwigs.

Also didn't Specter say that there was more in the GOP Senate caucus that supported the stimulus but couldn't vote for it because they were worried they could get primary challenged?

Totally agree. We need to see more of the Base of the GOP taking craps on Arlen to drive more folks into our arms.

I don't care for Snowe or Collins *at all*. Their form of Moderation GOP isn't close to the Howard Baker type that I grew up seeing in the GOP. But there is a some saftey in getting added numbers, as we see in the House. The further we can push it past 60, the fewer folks like Nelson and Bayh that we have to cow too. Also, the more extreme the GOP gets in Congress, the more likely that some like Dick Luger might end up retiring at the end of their current terms.

When idiots like this are in charge of the GOP, it's no wonder they are at 21% in party ID.

I am sure that your mama didn't raise you to be a lying liar but that does not stop you. Or what about playing the race card in 2006? (http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/showdown06/archives/individual/2006_11/010083.php). This is the best news I have heard since election day.

the audacity for this chud to think he is entitled to be notified if specter wants to leave the party. unbelievable.

It isn't about loyalty or respect towards your colleagues but doing what's right for your constituents. Sometimes I feel like they take it as a game.
