A Day After Congress Withholds Funds, Obama Defends Decision To Close Guantanamo

Yesterday, Congressional Democrats denied President Obama, at least for now, the funds he needs to close down the detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. They were responding in part to scare tactics from Republicans, who have been insisting for months that Obama's plan will bring terrorists to American cities. But they were also upset that Obama hadn't used his bully pulpit to counter those charges. Today, Obama did just that:

Some have derided our federal courts as incapable of handling the trials of terrorists. They are wrong. Our courts and juries of our citizens are tough enough to convict terrorists, and the record makes that clear. Ramzi Yousef tried to blow up the World Trade Center - he was convicted in our courts, and is serving a life sentence in U.S. prison. Zaccarias Moussaoui has been identified as the 20th 9/11 hijacker - he was convicted in our courts, and he too is serving a life sentence in prison. If we can try those terrorists in our courts and hold them in our prisons, then we can do the same with detainees from Guantanamo.

For more on this point, read this primer written by the National Security Network. And as Ken Gude of the Center for American Progress told me yesterday, Obama can still take near-term steps to begin closing the facility, and then return to Congress for funding in July, when his task force completes its comprehensive report on everything that policy will entail.

If the spineless Dems cannot stand up to Republican fear mongering, who can they stand up to? They have no basis for complaining about Obama not using his bully pulpit. They want someone to hide behind.

And the human rights groups who met with Obama yesterday, and are dismayed at his reactions? Why don't they start pressuring members of Congress? Harry Reid famously reminded us that there are three equal branches of government. But Harry Reid and the spineless Dems act as if Obama has to do all the leading. Can't have it both ways.

I made my first blog entry here, and I am reproducing it here, since I do not think that will get any attention :-)

One take away from the President's speech today...
May 21, 2009, 11:29AM

The speech was vintage Obama: illuminating, exhorting, cajoling, explaining, inspiring and shaming and much much more, all rolled into one amazing 50 minute speech.

BUT, I think the biggest take away was this: every one of us was complicit in getting the country where it is today, and in a sense enabling the thuggery of the last 8 years, so shape up America, and pay serious attention to the serious problems. The two particular targets were the two intransigent Congressional critter camps: Rethugs and DemWimps.

He was a classic professor, as he always is when necessary. I don't think he enjoys this aspect, but I think he does it when he has to, just enough to give him breathing room to do all the other things he needs to do to get us out of this incredible mess. My heart just aches that he has to keep doing this periodically.

He also had a not-so-secret exhortation for those of the on the left, sitting here and carping at him: I am in your camp, I want to do what you want to do; our obstacles are in the Congress, go put pressure on them. We have our marching orders. Anyone want to join me in trying to do something about this very real problem?

And Give Em Hell Harry and his band of jellyfish would have supported the President if only he had told them what to say

“As Senator Lindsey Graham said: ‘The idea that we cannot find a place to securely house 250-plus detainees within the United States is not rational.’”

With Memorial Day Weekend coming up, maybe Harry Reid and Brian Buetler can catch the inevitable "doc block on MSNBC"
