Coleman: I Will Review Sotomayer's Record "When I Am Re-Elected"

Former Sen. Norm Coleman (R-MN) has released a statement on the Sotomayor nomination, promising to make a thorough review of her record -- as soon as he's re-elected:

ST. PAUL - Senator Norm Coleman today released the following statement in response to President Obama's nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the United States Supreme Court.

"When debating judges, I was firm that I would use the same standard to evaluate judges under a Democrat President as I would a Republican President. Are they intellectually competent, do they have a record of integrity, and most importantly, are they committed to following the Constitution rather than creating new law and policy. When I am re-elected, I intend to review Judge Sotomayor's record using this process. Certainly, the nomination of a Hispanic woman to the nation's highest court is something all American's should applaud."

In all fairness to Coleman, Al Franken has also released a statement on the Sotomayor pick. On the other hand, as my TPM colleague Justin Elliott pointed out to me, Coleman's blog page shows that nearly all the posts over the last several months have been focused on his legal battle against Franken's victory, with barely any other comments on serious current issues.

Why do idiots like Quimby still think that Democrat as an adjective is cute?

Go back to grammar school. He will have the time when he is in jail when the feds get through with him. Moron.

He's saying exactly what he means to say. I don't like to cite wikipedia much, but

There’s no great mystery about the motives behind this deliberate misnaming. 'Democrat Party' is a slur, or intended to be – a handy way to express contempt.

and

(the term Democrat party) was used with particular virulence by the late senator Joseph R. McCarthy of Wisconsin

I seem to remember Gingrich fining House Republicans who referred to the DemocratIC Party. And I believe Tom Duh-Lay continued the practice under his Majority Leader tenure.

Gotta hand it to 'em, though. Wish the Dems were that well organized.

And if anyone can fine a solid reference to that, I'll send a check.

Not to mention "American's" as a plural.

I know lots of people don't grasp simple rules of grammar, spelling and punctuation, and I hate to be a Word Nazi, but really, shouldn't people in charge of *publishing* stuff right out in front of the public at least be required to have graduated from the 6th grade? It's one thing to suck writing texts and emails, but a U.S. senator's website? Please.

Oh wait, silly me, Norm's a Repub, and edumacation is a bad thing.

user-pic

That is the funniest thing I have read or heard all day long!!! Norm must be smoking the good stuff!!

user-pic

Poor Norm. What's up with the "when I am re-elected" phrase? Shouldn't he be taking it for granted that he won if he's going to put out silly statements like this? "Once the election results are affirmed in my favor and I am re-seated..." would have been the way to go. Oh well. So it goes for the doofus ex Senator from Minnesota.

user-pic

I suspect he has some unpaid intern writing his press releases these days. It explains this bizarre wording and the punctuation on "American's".

user-pic

It's called delusional

user-pic

You're burying the lede, here.

Coleman has clearly just announced that, after having lost the election this last time around, he intends to run again in six years!

(... but, someone really oughta tell him that, by that time, he won't have to review Sotomayer's record, at all.)

user-pic

I see Coleman is still mixing crack wit meth and Prozac and Scotch! LOL

user-pic

Which means he will never review her record.

user-pic

I don't know, maybe he was being sarcastic; a little like me saying how I'll review film of my Super Bowl performance, after my upcoming threesome with Tina Fey and Sarah Palin.

user-pic

Norm is srsly nuts.
Bwah. There are NO comments on any of his topics on his site.

user-pic

Norm should review the employment ads first.

user-pic

Me too.

I still wonder whether this Coleman kabuki is being drawn out as pure sham. It keeps Franken out for a while, and it satisfies the knuckle-draggers. I think he's sure that he will lose, and then breathe a huge sigh of relief.

Sure, the feds are looking at him, but there's also a Senate ethics committee just waiting to get him back.

user-pic

I had to write and say that I'm from Minnesota and we're really not all delusional. At least I'm pretty sure. There's a couple folks in St. Cloud I wonder about, but otherwise I think Norm has created his own category. Of course, he's not from around here :)

Sadly, Michele Bachmann is mostly from here but we can at least say she was born in Iowa. Sorry, Iowa, nothing personal.

user-pic

The Franken-Coleman election has been farcical for quite some time but it's the absolute height of absurdity that we are a few days from June 2009 and Minnesota has yet to decide who their senator is from the election in November 2008!!!

Absolutely ridiculous. Fucking decide already, if for no other reason than we don't have to hear this horseshit from douchebag norm.

user-pic

Interesting to note that Coleman himself is a failuere on all of the criteria by which he would evaluate a Supreme Court nominee:
"Are they intellectually competent, do they have a record of integrity, and most importantly, are they committed to following the Constitution rather than creating new law and policy."
Massive fail as far as following the law about how that Minnesota senate election is being decided.

user-pic

I understand that Coleman is giving oral to the Minnesota court in a couple of days. I wonder how that will come out.
