Dem Sen. Pryor: "Activist Judges Have No Place On The Highest Court Of The Land"
Sen. Mark Pryor (D-AR), has released this statement on the Sotomayor nomination -- expressing some possible skepticism from the relatively conservative end of the Democratic caucus:
I would expect President Obama, a former constitutional law professor, to select a high-caliber nominee who shares a deep respect for our Constitution and the rule of law. Indeed, Judge Sotomayor has impeccable credentials and an extraordinary American story. It is also critically important that she possess the proper judicial temperament and the ability to be fair and impartial. I believe this criterion is essential; activist judges have no place on the highest court of the land. That's why I plan to carefully review Judge Sonia Sotomayor judicial record and philosophy as the Senate confirmation process advances.U.S. Supreme Court nominees deserve a high threshold of review. I believe Judge Sotomayor's confirmation hearing should be rigorous, but fair. I am encouraged that her earlier nominations to the bench - by both a Democratic and Republican president -- have received strong, bipartisan support. It is my hope the Senate can carry out its constitutional duty in a similar fashion with good-faith and civility, and not allow rhetoric to cloud the confirmation process.

Um, is Pryor on the Judiciary Committee?
Somehow, I don't think there's going to be real opposition from conservative Dems on this. Obama is out west today fundraising for Mr. Timidity himself, Harry Reid. You think Obama's going to do all that fundraising in return for his first nomination to the Supreme Court getting shot down by Dems? I think this statement by Pryor is posturing more than anything else.
But then, outside of the actual nomination of Sotomayor, everything that has taken place so far today has been just that: posturing.

It might be posturing in a good way.
Pryor may have set up the Republican talking points as a straw man. Then, once it is "shown" that she is not an "activist", he can vote for her confirmation and blame the Republicans for obstruction.
At least that's what I hope.

Just as a side note, not completely irrelevant: I watched Religulous over the weekend, and if Mark Pryor isn't stupid, he does one hell of an impersonation of a moron.

Just curious - when's his motion to conduct impeachment of Scalia going to be submitted?

Oh, come on, Kleefeld or headline writer or both, don't start turning into the Drudginton Distort now. It is patently obvious from the statement that Pryor supports her, once you wade past the boilerplate bloviations, so you ran a fake story...even Ben Nelson likes it, so the frontal lobe-challenged wing of the Dems is on board...she will get between 70-80 votes...Rethuglicans are too smart (even them) to go against a working-class Latina Orrin Hatch voted for and who was appointed by Poppy

First, where is it written that judges shouldn't be activist?
Second, what the hell is an activist judge?
Third, JUDGES CAN'T LEGISLATE ANYWAY.

I live in Arkansas and am so disgusted by my Senator using Republican talking points. Republicans love activist judges, as long as those are Republican activist judges.
