Gates: Administration Is "Pretty Realistic" About Iran
Defense Sec. Robert Gates is on a trip to the Middle East, telling reporters that he'll reassure America's allies on outreach to Iran: "And I just think it's important to reassure our friends and allies in the region that while we're willing to reach out to the Iranians, as the president said, with an open hand, I think everybody in the administration, from the president on down, is pretty realistic and will be pretty tough-minded if we still encounter a closed fist."

GOP Turns To Former Bush Aides For Communications Advice
The Politico reports that the House GOP conference is bringing in three former Bush advisers -- former Bush press secretary Dana Perino, former deputy press secretary Tony Fratto, and former Bush counselor Ed Gillespie -- to give advice to House GOP press secretaries at this Friday's annual workshop. "We are battle-tested," said Perino.

NYT: Market, Budget-Hawks Concerned About Debt
The New York Times reports that the bond market and budget-hawks are beginning to show concern over the levels of debt that are being mounted up, with the interest rate on Treasury bills going up recently. "You're just paying more and more interest and having to borrow more and more money to pay the interest," said Charles S. Konigsberg, chief budget counsel for the Concord Coalition. "It diverts a tremendous amount of resources, of taxpayer dollars."

Gingrich: Obama Endangering Israel
Former Speaker Newt Gingrich told the Jerusalem Post that President Obama is endangering Israel. "They are systematically setting up the most decisive confrontation that we've ever seen," said Gingrich. He added: "There's almost an eagerness to take on the Israeli government to make a point with the Arab world."

Baucus Bill To Seek Changes In Cuba Policy

I guess they probably do have more experience than anyone else out there in trying to put lipstick on a pig.

Not to put too fine a point on it but "battle tested" doesn't necessarily infer that they passed the test. I think there's some indication (Bush's immense popularity for example) that those who shaped Bush's message perhaps failed.

Self-delusion in combination with self-promotion is gold waiting to be mined for snark.

I wasn't implying that they did. My larger point was that it doesn't matter whether your flacks are competent or incompetent -- if your underlying policies (or lack thereof) are destroying America (as Bush's did and as congressional Republicans would surely do if they ever got the chance), your approval ratings will deservedly wallow in the low 20s.

See now this is why I need coffee before typing. I hit the reply thingy under your post then went off on a completely different rant that should have been it's own post. I had no intention to gripe about your well stated point.

user-pic

Thanks, but no offense taken.

user-pic

Moose,

I take offense at your not taking offense.

user-pic

I think many of us feel the same way.

I think many of us feel the same way.

user-pic

Well, then I take offense at your taking offense at my not taking offense. I think. What were we talking about anyway?

Gotta love the GOP. While they're taking advice from the people who helped George Bush achieve mid-20s approval ratings, meanwhile Newt, who passed his sell-by date a decade ago, is electing himself their spokesman and sounding like a bigger idiot than ever (which is going some). Please keep it up, clowns.

re: Rice: "Even under those most difficult circumstances, the president was not prepared to do something illegal."

Bitch please! Like Rub-a-Dubya would know what's legal and what's not.

STFU you silly whore.

user-pic

Oh my God can you imagine the republican outrage if a prominent democrat openly criticized a sitting President the way Gingrich is doing. I truly hope the democrats kind a set of balls and come out and eviscerate this jackal.

user-pic

Yes, what happened to the old tradition of "politics stops at the border"?

user-pic

Like all other sacred political traditions, it only applies when it's protecting Republicans.

user-pic

Eh, Newt is just a real world net troll. Better to isolate them with silence. Getting into a huge uproar over it will only validate their viewpoint and give it more attention.
