Liddy: Let's Hope Sotomayor--Who Speaks 'Illegal Alien'--Isn't 'Menstruating' At Conferences

As my colleague Eric Kleefeld and I have been documenting this, there's a real split on the right between elected officials, particularly in the Senate, who have jobs to keep, and radical figureheads in the conservative movement who want to push the Republican party closer to the fringe. Sotomayor's nomination has unveiled, and widened, that divide. On one side of it, are conservative Republicans like Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX). And on the other, are people like G. Gordon Liddy, who took to the radio yesterday with this sentiment, "Let's hope that the key conferences aren't when [Sotomayor]'s menstruating or something, or just before she's going to menstruate. That would really be bad. Lord knows what we would get then."

He also said she--an American born New Yorker whose parents came from the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico--"is a member of La Raza, which means in illegal alien, 'the race.'"

This comes via ThinkProgress.

Earlier today, key Sotomayor opponent Wendy Long, who's never gone that far in her criticisms, was positively gobsmacked about the fact that Sotomayor's nomination has touched off an argument about race and identity politics. She was not immediately available for comment, but we've left a message with the Judicial Confirmation Network, and we'll let you know if she gets back to us.

Jeeezus!  Would somebody please buy this crackpot another box of candles so he'll have something to hold his finger over?

user-pic

He's just lucky he worked for Dick Nixon instead of Dick Cheney. He would have gotten shot, when he volunteered to stand on a corner!

user-pic

Would somebody please buy this crackpot another box of candles so we'll have something to hold his FACE over, too?

What a complete bastard.

user-pic

Well, there you have it. It's finally out there in the open. The problem with having women serve on the Supreme Court is PMS!!!!!

And menstruation!!!

I wonder how Mr. Liddy's relationships with women are.

user-pic

Have they never heard of menopause?

But, wow! Deranged much?

user-pic

Ha! :D

user-pic

PMS: When some women, for a few days a month, have to make an effort not to behave a little like right-wing pundits get paid to behave all the time.

user-pic

I wonder why they didn't think of PMS when Palin was going to her and MCains rallies.
Seems to me and a whole lot of other people that Palin was in a constant state of PMS.
Also, too.

When will the rethugs ever learn that if they don't have even a hint of a valid issue, to just give it up? And they think that this carrying on is going to help them come back from the wilderness??!!??

user-pic

HEHEHEHE!!!!!!!!!! I do not wonder at all. Either he is a misogynist or he has a menstruation fetish. I am uncertain just what would make him so unhinged. But remember his past. He was part and parcel of the Nixon illegal actions against our country so we can expect anything out of his mouth. I shudder every time he opens his mouth on behalf of our party. So many with his illegal bent these days that I wonder if we as Republicans will ever regain power again.

user-pic

Oh, and GOP?

Heckuva job on the outreach to women voters. Heckuva job.

user-pic

Who knew menopause was a qualification for the Supreme Court?

user-pic

At 54, there is a possibility that Ms. Sotomayor no longer menstruates.

Female biology wouldn't be a subject with which Liddy would have much familiarity.

Strictly butch.

user-pic

Besides, she's been a judge for what, 20+ years....

user-pic

The race-based attacks aren't any worse than what we've seen from Tancredo et al and the ideas behind the gender-based attacks aren't new either. But the language he uses in the gender-based attacks, when he references menstruation... that seems more, shall we say, inflammatory than the language we've seen in previous gender-based slander. Don't you think?

I read that and thought, "Wow. Wow!"

user-pic

Liddy sure doesn't know much about women. Aside from the complete idiocy of his comment, most 55 year old women have already passed through menopause and don't menstruate anymore. Why are people even LISTENING to this moron?

user-pic

Would someone clue Liddy on the facts of life? 54 year old women are most likely menopausal.

user-pic

Liddy is still overcompensating for his sickly childhood.

user-pic

Y'know, it's as if some clever pranksters at the DNC have started to write the speeches for these mo.rons like Liddy, Rove and Limbaugh. Every time they open their mouths they make the Republican party get smaller.... and smaller... and smaller...

user-pic

I don't even think the DNC would have wanted it to go this far. I feel like some of this shit is worse than it was last year with Obama.

user-pic

The rethugs call themselves "morans".

user-pic

Thing is, Pat Buchanan's not far off of this tone, yet MSNBC continues to put that racist on the air.

user-pic

Looks like the Republican Party has officially lost control of its message on this one to the lunatic fringe. I think Liddy is making an effective bid to beat out Tancredo as Limbaugh's running-mate in '012.

user-pic

No no, he did not use the Newt-approved terminology; "infections." We wouldn't want a Supreme Court justice getting her monthly infection whilst deciding a big case.

user-pic

Welcome to the Sarah Palin GOP! Also welcome to a long an wonderful era of DEM domination.

user-pic

Again, evidence of how few Republicans have ever had a long-term relationship. Most of their men throw the women out as soon as a younger one's available (Newt, Rush, Vitter, Livingston, Hyde) and many of their women are only married for cover (see Lynn Cheney, Barbara Olsen.)

My joke of the day: How are Republicans like California homosexuals? The majority voted against them.

There. That out to make their little minds explode.

user-pic

Oh please don't compare homosexuals to "them." Homosexuals are sooooo not like them. Also, the repugs lost CA by Waaaaayyyyyyy more!

user-pic

HAHA! Good one!

If Sotomayor had written a novel with lesbian love scenes in her younger years how long would it have taken for the right wingers to label her a closet lesbian? Lynn Cheney has always gotten a pass on her "lesbian tendencies" that speak loud and clear to anyone with a brain. I would suggest some of Dick's ugly disposition comes from being married to a person who just "isn't that into you" from the begining. Why hasn't someone asked old motor mouth what he thinks of Prop 8 in California?

user-pic

From a dudes perspective, all I can say is that next to the thoughtful and reasoned voice of Judge Sotomayor, Mr. Liddy sounds like the one suffering from P.M.D.D.

Whenever he's on the tube he also appears to be suffering from hot flashes, and he's let the ol' figure go a little bit, too.

But I guess you are entitled to not really care anymore when you get to a certain age...

user-pic

These guys make Earl Butz look like a freedom rider.

user-pic

Oh my god, you are so funny!!!

user-pic

This is so beyond belief, but as a woman who spent 26 years in the good-ole-boy halls of federal service, I'm dismayed to say that there are still quite a few "like-minded" idiots out there who deeply resent smart women in the workplace. (Now that I think about it, most of them were Republicans.)

And, add to your list of those who threw their women overboard for a newer model... John McCain.

user-pic

What misogynistic BS. But she'll probably play hooky on Cinco de Mayo.

user-pic

ROTFLOL

user-pic

Is it possible they're doing all this just to carve out some space for the newer, kinder, gentler and rebranded Republican party?

user-pic

Simple answers to simple questions:

No. :)

user-pic

TheraP said: Besides, she's been a judge for what, 20+ years...

Yeah, and now we know why she's been reversed so much--must have been those time of the month rulings

user-pic

G. Gordon Liddy: The triple-distilled essence of wingnut, aged in a fetid vessel for 39+ years.

user-pic

At TP, the trolls are comparing the major media figures' attacks on Sotomayor with cherry-picked negative blog comments about Sarah Palin!

user-pic

Total false equivalency (as usual)! Show me any "liberal" (as if there are any besides Keith and Rachel) media person who said anything approaching the kinds of things about Palin as they are about Judge Sotomayor and I'll eat my hat! Could you imagine the uproar there would have been, the utter outrage and calls for beheading, if anyone in the "liberal" media had said something about the potential Vice President and menstruation? My God, it would have been a bloodbath. They got nuthin'! Weak and epic fail!

user-pic

BLOODBATH??????? hahahahahahaha!

user-pic

OK - I've been gone for a long time (work, health, other issues), but I simply MUST comment on this absolute nightmare. Not only is he a mysogynist but he is absolutely ignorant of human biology. Chances are Judge Sotomayor is not menstruating anymore and has (or is) going through menopause (not that it matters, mind you ... but it does show the level of ignorance that we are subjected to by these troglodytes).

Why the media gives any credence to these horror shows is beyond me - Tom Tancredo? Pat Buchanan? G. Gordon Liddy? Newt Gingrich? The mind reels. And you have John Cornyn, who is nobody's favorite conservative, trying to restore some semblance of decency. You know you're in deep trouble when John Cornyn is the voice of reason and restraint!

Glad to be back! I've been lurking for months so I haven't missed too much but just haven't been well enough (or around enough) to post. :)

user-pic

I like the way you put it. John Cornyn, the voice of reason! ROTF ROTF ROTF CONTINUOUS LAUGHTER!

user-pic

I truly do not understand the girl cootie fears. It's very 1970s. Haven't we had a bit of experience since then that has moved us beyond such primal male objections? Such as two female justices on SCOTUS already?

It's so crazy & ugly, but it feels so retro besides. What's going on?

user-pic

Yeah, but they were old, white females. O'Connor and Ginsburg (politics aside) were much less threatening than Sotomayor is to conservative males. Sotomayor is relatively young, smart, outspoken, assertive and non-white, which frankly makes the poor scared little boys pee their pants. They are just terrified of her and what she represents (on a visceral level), so they're going to tear her down as ferociously as they can so they can prop up their little egos and regain some sense of power.

OK, enough pop psychology. It's actually entertaining to watch - on a certain level - how predictable certain people's responses have been. :)

user-pic

But O'Connor was 51 when she was sworn in, younger than Sotomayor. I get that these men are terribly frightened by Sotomayor, and that it's a visceral fear that they can't quite get themselves to bring under control, speaking of being guided by feelings, but why the specific focus on Sotomayor's physiology? What point is Liddy even trying to make, in 2009, with that?

This has to be Overton Window stuff. The ideas of the way-out whackos are intended to make those of the mild-mannered whackos look better.

They makes my skin crawl.

user-pic

A little humor: G. Gordon Liddy's perception of Judge Sotomayor during that time of the month:

http://www.hulu.com/watch/10234/saturday-night-live-annuale

Enjoy!! :P

user-pic

Perhaps it's not fair for me to judge, being the son of an OB/GYN, but...

Is it possible that conservatives are so out of touch with the realities of life that they've never even heard about "the change" that women go through at a certain age? (menopause)

Listening to Newt Gingrich, Pat Buchanan and Gordon Liddy you'd think Sonia Sotomayor is a teen-age version of Karl Marx, Angela Davis, and Brittany Spears.

(Josh was right... "like moths to a flame.")

user-pic

If I see Liddy the next time I am menstruating, I am totally going to kick his ass. (kidding)

Do Republicans not realize that women make up half the electorate?

user-pic

Under a George Gordon Liddy-Gingrich administration, would hysterectomies be made mandatory for Federal Service employment, elected or otherwise?
Recall that it was GGL who once urged his radio show listeners to shoot Federal Agents in the head if they crossed paths.

user-pic

my god. when i read a comment earlier that noted liddy's comments, i honestly thought it was someone just goofing.

i am truly stunned by the level of unhinged fear/hate these puffy middled aged white men have of this one woman.

user-pic

At age 53, I sincerely hope she's not still menstruating at ALL. Liddy doesn't seem to know too much about women.

user-pic

C'mon, Snarky...I am 53 and Aunt Flo still visits every month. Not. That. Rare. Average is 51, according to the all-knowing Wikipedia.

I like to chide my male friends about the FACT that some women may have raging hormones for a few days a month, but men's hormones are raging all the time! Nonstop testosterone poisoning. That's why men are bad judges. Just ask former U.S. District Judge Samuel Kent of Houston.

I think convicted felon G. Gordon Liddy has this same condition, even at the advanced age of 78.

user-pic

Years ago I worked on a project in Connecticut to open a major political organization to women (Sen. Chris Dodd will no doubt recall this)and I stated at the time that the men were afraid we would bleed on their banquet floor...and now here it is almost a quarter of a century later and this is the expressed white male right wing fringe view: That bleeding will interfere with a woman supreme court justice's decision making...Oh, if they only knew that now Sonia Sotomayer holds her wise blood inside and is even more powerful than they fear...its time, its happening, magic is afoot, Goddess is alive...

user-pic

Amen (or Blessed Be) to that sister!

user-pic

Well this is the comments of a Republican commentator.
It must be viewed as normal, by others in the party, who have not stepped up to distance themselves from the comment.
With crap like this, it's no wonder the Republicans are reported to be splitting up. Totally out of line.

user-pic

When I see George Liddy speak about anything, I only wonder why he ever got released from jail for his White House crimes. Even the other criminals over at the Zoo knew he was a psycopath, but he was their psycopath. They could always use the "But he was a psycho" card. He was all for murder, kidnapping, burglary, now he claims to know about Judges. the only thing he knows about a judge is how to cop a plea in front of one.

user-pic

Yes pbeat, G. Gordon Liddy commenting on anyone's mental stability... It's just too rich.

user-pic

I am an older white male who has been married for many years.

While my dear wife long ago discontinued her monthly cycle, I learned during that time what PMS means.

It means Punish My Spouse.

But I didn't mind. She continues to be my best friend. Besides, I wasn't always so pleasant during that time either.

user-pic

Thanks for the link.

The lions' picture is right on. It reminded me of old times.

You sort of walk on by, trying to appear as if you are not paying too much attention (see picture of male lion behavior).

But inside you are cringing, for there is no doubt in your mind who at that moment has all the power and is calling all the shots.

And even though you suspect the irrational behavior is probably only temporary - you are also relieved that the accepted family philosophy has always been that there are no guns allowed in the house! (See tentative expression by male lion).

This is all stated, of course, with a bit of tongue-in-cheek humor.

user-pic

I love this thread! Great comments, all!...Earl Butz--a freedom rider...Hmmm...Secy of Ag for Nixon & Ford; once said: "All (black people) want is loose shoes, tight pussy and a warm place to shit. This is off the record, isn't it? Isn't it?" Also said: "I like it when meat prices rise. The choicest cuts are still available when I get to the market". A real mensch. Really had the common touch.

user-pic

Also- I have always believed that the CORE of wingnut paranoia is hatred and fear of women and all things soft. Hence the bizarrely excessive masculine posturing coupled with the nervous pre-adolescent snickering and denigration of female body functions. Read "The Wimp Factor; gender gaps, holy wars, and the politics of anxious masculinity" by Stephen J. Ducat (2004)for an in depth exploration of these resentful, narcissistically injured man-boys.

user-pic

Liddy's comments are just plain horrible.
amazing that women are even let out of the bathroom, let alone working in public.
i say, lets mail Gordon our kotex and tampons...send them C.O.D.
for "Crazy old Dips__t"

user-pic

G. Gordon Liddy a convicted felon, a good friend of the right wingnuts at Fox, and now a spokesperson for the GOP, WOW. A true sign the republican party is a group of scared old white boys. The GOP [THE AMERICAN TALIBAN PARTY] will never be a viable party again. Good riddance.

user-pic

Hopefully someone will menstruate on Liddy at the next tea-bagging event.
