TPMDC Sunday Roundup

Obama Delivering Notre Dame Commencement Address Today
President Obama is scheduled to deliver the commencement address and receive an honorary degree at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, at 2 p.m. ET. Pro-life protesters have already marched at the campus against Obama's pro-choice position. At 6:10 p.m. ET, he will headline a Democratic fundraiser in Indianapolis. He is scheduled to arrive back at the White House at 9 p.m. ET.

Steele: Notre Dame Honorary Degree For Obama 'Inappropriate'
Appearing today on Meet The Press, RNC chairman Michael Steele criticized the decision of Notre Dame to award President Obama an honorary degree. "Those institutions don't hand those degrees out that readily. So it is a very strong sticking point, and I think a lot of Catholics and a lot of pro-life Americans are very concerned about that, and I think it is inappropriate," said Steele. He added: "The president should speak, but the degree should not be conferred."

McConnell Keeps Filibuster Option For SCOTUS Nominee
Appearing today on Fox News Sunday, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) did not rule out the possibility of filibustering President Obama's nominee for the Supreme Court. When confronted with his own opposition to filibusters of judicial nominees from the "nuclear option" fight of 2005, McConnell pointed out that the nuclear option wasn't followed, and that then-Senator Obama himself opposed a cloture vote on Justice Alito, "So the president himself has indicated that all options are open."

McConnell Refuses To Endorse Bunning
Also during his Fox News Sunday appearance, McConnell refused to give an endorsement to his Republican co-Senator Jim Bunning, who has openly accused the GOP leadership of trying to force him into retirement. "Well, it's -- it's just not clear exactly who the players are going to be in Kentucky," said McConnell, under repeated questioning by Chris Wallace.

Webb Comes Out Against "Artificial Timelines" For Closing Gitmo
Appearing on This Week, Sen. Jim Webb (D-VA) shifted course on closing the prison at Guantanamo Bay. "I think we all are moving toward the right direction. But we shouldn't be creating artificial timelines," said Webb. When George Stephanopoulos reminded him that the Obama Administration has pointed to January 2010, Webb said: "They've said a lot of things and taken a look and said some other things. So let's process these people in a very careful way and then take care of it."

Boehner: Cheney, Limbaugh And Gingrich Helping, Not Hurting, GOP
Appearing on State of the Union, House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) said that Dick Cheney, Rush Limbaugh and Newt Gingrich are not hurting the Republican Party: "If we're going to show the American people that we've got a better way forward, having a chorus of voices out there, I think is helpful to our effort."

NYT: Conservatives Preparing To Attack Eventual SCOTUS Nominee
The New York Times reports that conservative groups are gearing up to attack any of the mentioned possible nominees for Supreme Court, on issues such as abortion and gay marriage. "It's a massive teaching moment for America," said conservative fund-raiser Richard A. Viguerie. "We've got the packages written. We're waiting right now to put a name in."

Steele's Newest Pitch: Gay Marriage Costs Money
Speaking yesterday at the George Republican convention, Michael Steele said opposition to gay marriage should be pitched in terms of how marriage would place a burden on small businesses. "Now all of a sudden I've got someone who wasn't a spouse before, that I had no responsibility for, who is now getting claimed as a spouse that I now have financial responsibility for," Steele explained. "So how do I pay for that? Who pays for that? You just cost me money."

He's on to something, ya know. I propose that employers should have the right to forbid heterosexual workers from marrying and also to force their employees/spouses to have abortions because those resultant spouses/dependents also cost them money.

The guy is a total dumbass.

Smarter than a bag of hammers, but not by much.

user-pic

Sounds to me like he's making an argument from the right for the Public Option, doesn't it?

user-pic

I am thoroughly disgusted by most of what I've read in the roundup - most despicable is Michael Steele. Most ignorant is Boehner - talk about whipped. Really? Cheney, Rush and Newt are helping? Well, I guess if you add up their approval numbers, you might get close to Obama's. Biggest Hypocrite is McConnell - I hope this whole SCOTUS nomination blows up in the GOP's face.

"It's a massive teaching moment for America," said conservative fund-raiser Richard A. Viguerie. "We've got the packages written. We're waiting right now to put a name in."

Yep, Dickie, sure enough. Its a moment to teach the American people what we're talking about when we call ou the "Party of No." No matter who he nominates, you're going to oppose him or her and no matter who it is, you're going to say exactly the same things. "Radical," "out of the mainstream," "judicial activist," "legislate from the bench," "dangerous tilt to the left, "culture of life," blah de blah de blah yada yada yada. Doesn't matter who it is, what their record is or what they say; when you're an old white male right wing extremist, they all look alike to ya.

user-pic

The window of opportunity has slammed shut at this point, because the Party of No label has stuck. And no matter what Republicans say, Democrats can say in response "You've opposed everything the President has done up to this point. This is just more of the same."

I have to admit I've been surprised at how badly the Republicans have handled this. I gave them more credit than they deserved.

After seeing Rummy's Crusader Cover Art, I am prepared to say I do not give a rat's ass what President Obama wants or does not want. This is not about him.

One predicts these are going to explode in our faces, as bad as any torture photo. We. Cannot. Have. This.

What I find amazing is how much disgust for our political leaders I had left to endure. I figured it could not get worse.

Extrapolating 183 WBings of KSM, we ran a global torture network that had to involve thousands of CIA and military people, all directed by the Vice President who knew the names of his victims.

War crimes tribunals now, please. And super-max for KSM.

Wither Holder?

OH MY GOD!!!! Thanks for the link. These people are really insane. They have no idea of reality. To think they had their fingers on the button for 8 years. It's frightening. Liz Vader on This Week this morning was really frightening. They are all so freaking delusional. They should be locked up in insane asylums. That will be their war crimes defense, temporary insanity.

user-pic

Obama is not thinking about what he wants and he does not think this is about him. I can see why you are outraged but let's stay level headed.

user-pic

Obama tends to think that anything that happened before he got there doesn't count and doesn't need to be dealt with.

He thinks if he forgives them and he doesn't do the same thing, there is no harm in not enforcing the law.

One of the aims of law is deterrence. Has any perpetrator suffered anything except passing embarrassment because they promulgated torture?

user-pic

Oh I'm sorry, I didn't know you knew him so well.

user-pic

That's such a bullshit comment! From the second he entered office all he's been dealing with is what came before him. Healthcare, the economy, our sinking education system, two wars and god knows what else.

It's amazing that a vast majority of the criticism against Obama is never backed up with facts. Just shrill nonsense.

user-pic

Not knowing me from a stick of wood, I find your projection of your own fear of perhaps coming apart at the seams onto me ill-advised.

Calling for the law to be enforced does not in any way make me not level-headed.

Why don't you focus on the facts of the case, and not how you wish things COULD be, and reserve the questioning of the credibility of people you do not know to the Republicans.

War crimes tribunals, please.

user-pic

I have no fear of you coming apart at the seams. Actually I think it's quite funny the way some of you froth at the mouth over news like this.

As for facts of the case, the only people that have those facts (the gov't) will never share them with you or the media - so keep wishing on a star that Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld will be let out in handcuffs and sent to prison.

user-pic

Then Obama's proclamations that we are a nation of laws, and that no one is above the law are meaningless.

Meaningless.

So why would you then continue to believe other statements from him?

Do you also have some sort of secret knowledge about what he's thinking?

user-pic

A Sunday morning parade of ignorants?

I can only say that it is probably best for the country that these people get out into the open and demonstrate their ignorance so that all can clearly see why our country fell into such darkness.

Now we are going going to have to fight for our country and bringing it back into the light. We cannot expect President Obama to be able to do that as one man. There are many battles that are going to require us to get active, fight, and take a stand.

Whatever we want. If it's worth having, it's worth fight for.

Liz Cheney http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liz_Cheney is a run-of-the-mill right wing ideologue, with the exception that she owes her career to her father's typical machinations. A job was invented for her at the State Department in 2001, and the old schemer made sure Powell was named as supposedly behind that. She moved in and out of government at will under Bush/Cheney, mouthing off a year ago on the need to support Israel's quest to bomb Iran: "I certainly don't think that we should do anything but support them." http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/story/2008/07/02/ST2008070203270.html She's been running around in the past months trying to have her father's "important" writings somehow catalogued -- what she really wants is for him to have his own Library as having been Shadow President.

When Fred Thompson couldn't stay awake for his campaign, she re-hitched her jingoistic wagon to Romney. Expect her to be there for him in 2012 if she thinks he's viable -- the hag could be his Secretary of State, heaven forbid! And that would put Dad back in charge as maniac emeritus, if Romney would stand for it!

MEMO TO MITT: You don't need that soap opera; DO NOT HIRE!

Prioritize

do you want power (to at least keep the lunatics from doing any more harm)

or

do you want reckoning, the vengeance of the lord, to smite the arrogance and take revenge for the years of psychological agony.

if you want reckoning seek help

if you want power (you= your party) then you have to not only win by out arguing the our side but also by depriving them of their best argument.

-2010 argument for the GOP will be stop the democrats from their power crazy revenge witch-hunt

by voting for republican senators to sandbag the Obama-Pelosi flood (there will be some wicked gay storm on the background)

they are also waiting for the next terror attack so they are laying the ground work for that, "is America save under Obama" meme is a paving of the road for that scenario.

we win not because Mr Obama does everything we ask of him or expect of him but because the GOP is out of power and would not inflict upon us their medieval worldview.

everyday there is no republican in the white house of in the majority leader position in the congress is a victorious day for our side.
