TPMDC Saturday Roundup

Obama Seeks To Reassure Country On Flu
In this weekend's Presidential YouTube address, President Obama discussed the action that the government has taken to deal with the swine flu, including distributing antiviral treatments from the country's strategic stockpile, and also discusses the precautions that schools and businesses should take:

"It is my greatest hope and prayer that all of these precautions and preparations prove unnecessary," said Obama. "But because we have it within our power to limit the potential damage of this virus, we have a solemn and urgent responsibility to take the necessary steps."

GOP Address Criticizes Democrats For Stimulus, Other Spending
In this weekend's Republican YouTube, freshman Rep. Lynn Jenkins (R-KS) criticized President Obama and Congressional Democrats for the stimulus bill and other spending programs:

"This week, we marked the President's 100th day in office," said Jenkins. "And while, like most of you, I like the President personally, I think the Democrats' first 100 days running Washington can be summed up in three words: spending, taxing, and borrowing."

GOP Preparing For Political Fight On SCOTUS Nominee
The Politico reports that Republicans are already researching the records of potential Supreme Court nominees, hoping to find the sort of positions or statements that can be held against Senate Democratic incumbents who are up for re-election in 2010. "I don't think, given their majority, that we can stop them," said a GOP aide, "but it's a great opportunity for us to tie their incumbents to whatever crazy opinions or statements come to light."

NYT: Obama Has Opportunity For Different Kind Of Justice
The New York Times points out that the new Supreme Court vacancy gives President Obama an opportunity to put someone on the court who does not already come from the ranks of the judiciary. "Until recently," the Times says, "Supreme Court justices were often former legislators, governors, cabinet members, law professors and practicing lawyers."

SCOTUS Vacancy Means Cash For Conservative Interest Groups
CQ reports that the Supreme Court vacancy is set to be a cash-cow for conservative interest groups. "The Supreme Court is great," said conservative fundraiser Dan Morgan. "That's going to be mail, that's going to be phone calls," he said. "The clients I work with are in meetings already. There are letters being written already."

Schwarzenegger Opens Door To Supporting Dem To Succeed Him
At a press conference yesterday, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R-CA) did not rule out endorsing a Democrat to succeed him in the 2010 election: "It could happen, yes." He did, however, say that he won't switch parties: "I think the Kennedy family has enough Democrats." So is he serious, that this could actually happen?

AP: Dems Seeing Opportunities On Gay Marriage
The Associated Press analyzes that Democrats are seeing opportunities in the political battles over gay marriage, with polls showing increasing support. "In recent weeks, Vermont and Iowa have legalized same-sex marriage, while New York, Maine and New Hampshire have taken steps in that direction," the AP says. "Polls show younger Americans are far are more tolerant on the issue than are older generations."

Arnold is not a Republican. It's time that he faces that manifest fact.

He is a Republican, but he's one without a party or political future.

The party has clearly deserted its old moderate wing, and Schwartzenegger is one of the last standing. Besides him there's Snowe and Collins in the Senate, and maybe Crist of Florida. None of them have any pull whatsoever with the party.

As for his future...he's term-limited as governor. His Austrian birth renders him ineligible for the Presidency. That leaves the Senate. While part of me loves the thought of him "debating" the likes of Ben Nelson and Blanche Lincoln in favor of such things as common sense, and part of me loves the thought of him kicking Dianne Feinstein out on her sorry ass, I just can't imagine him wanting that job. Governors exercise power. Senators hardly do that when they're in the majority. And when they're in the minority...? Even with senatorial privilege — even if he did switch parties — the elixir of power will seem quite diluted to someone who knows the taste of the real thing.

Schwartzenegger has nothing to gain at this point from a party switch. Unless I'm wrong and he's just itching to sit in the Senate... . Otherwise, his future is in movies.

He's neither a Republican nor a Democrat. He's an opportunist. How else could he have known to meet with Ken Lay PRIOR to the brown outs in California?

user-pic

Like most Rethuglicans, Arnold is just another opportunistic white-collar criminal; the epitome of a bad actor. And, unlike Ken Lay, he was able to game the system to the tune of millions (from the purses of grandmothers) without any repercussions. If there were any justice in Amerika he would go away, preferably to a federal penitentiary for 20 years!

And..... his wife is really, really, really upset for him being in SAC and not even asking her if he could run! Didn't you see that interview? She is ticked she lost her job and is stuck at home with teen children! Poor thing she has no energy to do anything like help anyone else.

No, Arnold is a Republican, but not a radical one. He insists that the state budget can be balanced with declining state revenue, growing state employee pay, and cutting only the "waste", but he refuses to propose a budget that would do that. Typical California Repub.

At one time Repubs like Arnold were relatively common, but the party today prefers to go with only the most extreme, irrational, idealogues they can find. But, like Spector, that doesn't make Arnold a Democrat, just a semi-rational Repub.

I'm beginning to think we'll soon have a thriving two party system again. The Blue Dog Dems split off to form a Centerist party and progressives hold on to the Democratic party. The GOP becomes the spoiler "third party". However you slice it it's a good day to be a progressive :-)

user-pic

Wow.

I think you might be on to something there. It's not only a great time to be a progressive, but a great time to be observing politics. We've been treated to a lot of "seconds" that we haven't seen in over 150 years. We were witness to impeachment for the first time in 150 years, we were witness to a father/son Presidency for the first time in over 150 years, and we may well be witness to the demise of a major political party for the first time in 150 years.

Way cool.

ACH!!! We need a Sunday thread here. Did you ever hear a more disgusting expedient, though admittedly honest, reason for his change in party? Whine. He doesn't want to run in the Republican primary. Whine. But count on him to vote against labor. Count on him to vote against the public plan on healthcare. He is ENTITLED to seniority. His word. He is ENTITLED. But he is definitely NOT A LOYAL DEMOCRAT. His word.

This is change we can believe in? This is what is wrong with this country. An ENTITLED out-of-touch, all about me, Congress.

We are going to be so screwed on healthcare. The fix is in. The ENTITLED run this country.

user-pic

There is supposed to be a Sunday thread. It's called the TPMDC Sunday Round-up. I think those in charge of posting it are slacking. The Saturday thread gets posted pretty late these days as well.

I think Josh needs to light some fires under these new interns ;-)

It seems like all the government does under Democrats, is raise money and then spend it on things! What is it they think government is supposed be doing ?!?

I really wish they'd get Michele Bachmann to deliver the Rethuglican response next time.

What an absolutely fabulous job she'd do! Hey, Michele, you've got my vote. You go girl!
