Poll: Obama Leads Big GOP Names For 2012

A new national survey from Public Policy Polling (D) finds President Obama leading several potential 2012 opponents by substantial margins.

The numbers: Obama leads Newt Gingrich 53%-36%; he's ahead of Mike Huckabee 52%-39%; he leads Sarah Palin 56%-37%; and he beats Mitt Romney 53%-35%.

Obama's approval rating is 55% in this poll, to a disapproval of 38%. By contrast, Gingrich's favorable rating is only 30% against 47% unfavorable; Huckabee's is 44%-32%; Palin's is 42%-50%; and Romney's rating is 40%-36%.

Of course, it's only May 2009, and Iowa Republicans presumably won't be voting until January 2012. So take this all with a heap of salt.

So take this all with a heap of salt.

Which leads to the obvious question: why even post such a meaningless piece of drivel? Should I worry about which way the wind was blowing in Honolulu three and a half years before I fly from New York to Chicago?

user-pic

Because it's interesting. And it gives you a good sense of who has the most influence right now.

user-pic

An electric dog polisher is more interesting and about as useful.

user-pic

Speaking of interesting, what are you adding to this thread?

user-pic

The original question: of what use is this poll?

What's your excuse?

user-pic

Tell me more about this electric dog polisher!

user-pic

Can't help you there -- see Steve Martin's "Let's Get Small."

user-pic

sorry but it does not.

all it tells you is personal favorites which mean nothing.

would every person votetheir party regardless of who was running?

probably so.

35% will never vote dem.
and thats all this poll is saying.

user-pic

I hate to nitpick but aren't you comparing apples to oranges when you compare approval to favorable ratings?

user-pic

Now that I look at the pdf it seems ppp intentionally or unintentionally did the same by having approval be the first question and having the favorable ratings of the others question 2, 3 and so on.

user-pic

Hey, might as well start polling. I'm surprised Florida or Michigan haven't gotten around to setting their primaries for July 2009. Followed by Iowa and New Hampshire moving their back to last Saturday and Tuesday before last, respectively.

user-pic

Keep in mind the undecided for each is pretty much in about 10 add another 5 for O and call it a Reaganesque route.

user-pic

If the economy has recovered by 2012, I could see Obama getting around 60%.

user-pic

By 2011 the REAL economy will be on the upswing, as in the job market getting the boost it needs with more and more job creation. I don't see 2012 as a very good year for Repubs, maybe in the Senate but O has some very large coattails.

user-pic

Honestly this polling scares the shit out of me. Is one out of three Americans so damned stupid to think Newt or Sarah would be a better President than Obama? OMG that is just mind boggling. I shows how freaking stupid a huge chunk of America is and gets the point out not to take anything for granted when you have these idiots stalking the rest of us everywhere we go .......

user-pic

Why? Because the TPM authors at their core are establishment, anti-obama propagandists attemping to cover their agenda with faux journalism and dismissive polls.

Other than these inside msnbc publications, it's about the best your gonna find on the internet.

What's up msnbc??? What was Iran thinking...lololololer's.

user-pic

I'm for Obama. The Fox Republicans have nothing!

user-pic

Way too early folks.

user-pic

Wow, 35% of the country would vote for Gingrich right now and 40% of us actually like Sarah Palin!!

This poll does show how polarized the country is still. Perhaps maintaining this is why the Repukes have chosen to stir the pot violently instead of even marginally cooperating.

user-pic

Would Palin be deterred from running? She probably has about 6 to decide whether to run for re-election in 2010. I imagine she would not if she plans a presidential run.
