Report: Steele Defuses "Democrat Socialist Party" Resolution

Has Michael Steele averted the cultural and political train-wreck that would have come from the RNC's proposed "Democrat Socialist Party" resolution? That's what CNN now reports.

RNC member David Norcross of New Jersey, who had been a sponsor of the resolution, told CNN: "The language is being changed so that the proposers and chairman Steele are on the same page." Steele had opposed this thing from the start, and had sought to avoid the spectacle -- yes, Michael Steele thought this was too goofy.

Instead, Norcross said the resolution will now simply "condemn the Democrats' march to socialism" instead of renaming the Dems as the "Democrat Socialist Party." Wisconsin GOP chairman Reince Priebus, a Steele ally, predicted that such an altered version should pass easily once the final language has cleared the resolutions committee.

In a gesture of friendly bipartisanship, I suggest that we not refer to Republicans as "the Whig Party", and instead merely wonder at their march to a Whig-like level of relevance.

We always appreciate your input, Governor!

HA ha!

Yay - he's made the Republicans look slightly less stupid. This is what passes for leadership?

Come on, guys. Giving Steele credit for crap like this, keeping him in the media - none of this is helping. Some enjoy the fact that the other side seems to be 99% clowns, but these people are in powerful positions. This has stopped being funny, to me.

Steele has once again outraged the GOP's rightwing base by being soft on the socialists!

It's good for the GOP because now Republicans don't have to sound stupid using the term "Democratic Socialist Party." They also won't get heat from the base or look wishy-washy when they don't use it.

Now they have the option of "condemning the march to socialism" which is much more desirable because that's what they're doing already.

Not that this is a huge victory for them. All they've done is slip out of a trap they created for themselves.

Oops, I meant "Democrat Socialist Party." There I go again giving them too much credit....

I think the change really does work to the GOP's benefit. Trying to rename the Democratic party is comparable to Pepsi rebranding Coca-Cola as "diabetes juice" (I like my first name choice, "ebola cancer sludge" better, but "diabetes juice" is more relevant). Pepsi looks far less sophomoric by instead launching an ad campaign criticizing Coke's contribution to childhood obesity.

And no, I don't think the GOP calling Dems socialist is any less hypocritical than Pepsi blaming rotund children on Coke.

As much as I hate abuses of power, now that I think about it I would strongly support the Dems forcing the GOP to rename themselves the Republican Communist Party. Or maybe get a little more original and mandate that they use the phrase "fighting for the rights of jihadists and pedophiles everywhere" in all of their campaign material. Or creating a national self-flagellation holiday titled "Bush/Cheney '04 day".

Actually as a Republican I have heard local leaders emphasize that Republicans need to call the opposition the Democrat Party. This silliness is the result of the far, far right taking over the Republican party. That silly idea does NOT demean Democrats, it just makes Republicans look so stupid that they cannot pronounce a word with as many syllables as Dem-o-crat-ic Party contains. Far too intricate for those far right wingers that have our party right down equal in numbers with the Communist Party of America. Amazing how short sighted they really are. No big tent for these guys.

A year from now your taxes will be catching up with the Obama Administration's hand out plan for the "I gata watch Oparh and dont have time to get a job" voters.
Global Warming aka Climate Change ake Weatherman's Headache will be different because it is different everyday. This is not science it is politics.
I really want the president to do well, our first black pres, wow, but his changes are not solid thought through actions. Its like congress did with Fanney and Freedy a few years ago. Franks, Dodd and Obama got the $$$ and now we are paying the tax bill.

Racist.

user-pic

Yeah, um...you really didn't do yourself too many favors with that post, guy.

user-pic

This has to be a joke troll. There's no way someone that stupid could spell "www.talkingpointsmemo.com" correctly.

user-pic

Can you tell us your 2008 and 2009 incomes and tax rates?

user-pic

Freeeeeeeeedey really fucked up the economy.

user-pic

Well, his name *is* water.boarder...

user-pic

Wallace? Is that you?

user-pic

Some comments undermine the statement that the poster wants Obama to do well. Sort of like a gracious statement about someone before one sticks in the knife.

user-pic

You tell 'em mJJ!!! Why should that guy have the right to have his opinion respected in this forum?!?!?

I agree, we should just assume the guy is out to get us democrats. Republicans are evil and liberals are truly enlightened. Wait a minute....Lincoln and Martin Luther King were both Republicans weren't they?!?!?! DANG IT!!!

user-pic

Hey WaterBoarder,

First of all, do you dispute that carbon dioxide is destroying our planet???? Oh wait, what do we humans exhale? What do plants use to create oxygen? Ummm, well anyway what are you doing here in the first place? If you are a dang conservative, shouldn't you be busy running a business and providing jobs and helping pay back the 10 trillion dollar debt we are now under? Sheesh!!!

user-pic

We could rename the GOP the Know Nothing Party. Which would at least have the advantage of accuracy.

user-pic

At the next meeting of the DNC should they propose a resolution to condemn the Republican's march towards theocracy?

Perhaps a resolution asking the RNC to officially change its name to "Republican't Party - The Party of No"?

user-pic

I'm ok with "democrat socialist party" as long as we start referring to the National Football League as the Socialist Football League. Think about it; they have revenue sharing, a salary cap, and the biggest loser gets the first draft pick.
