Sestak: Pending Blessing From My Family, I Intend To Run
Rep. Joe Sestak (D-PA) appeared on CNN moments ago and confirmed what I first reported earlier today--that he intends to jump into the Pennsylvania Democratic Senate primary against Sen. Arlen Specter (D-PA), pending the blessing of his family.
Sestak has recently begun reaching out to donors in his state, informing them of his plans and asking them to contribute to his campaign in advance of the June 30 FEC filing deadline.
We've followed Sestak's rising star with great interest for months now.
With a $3 million campaign war chest, and a decorated military career behind him, he seemed for a long time to be the Democrats' most compelling potential opponent to either Specter, who was until recently a Republican, or Pat Toomey, who was challenging Specter in the Republican primary from the right.
When Defense Secretary Robert Gates released his Pentagon budget outline this spring, Sestak (a Navy Rear Admiral) played surrogate, defending the plan from critics who were characterizing it as a weak-on-defense spending cut. He was omnipresent. But for the most party, when asked about his political ambitions, he played coy.
Then Specter switched parties--and Sestak's disposition quickly changed. Suspicious of Specter's motives, and unhappy that his once clear path to the nomination was suddenly obstructed, Sestak turned up the temperature on both the Senate's newest Democrat and the party establishment, which wasted no time throwing their support behind the supposed incumbent.
Over the implicit objections of many in his party, he said he'd be undeterred if he ultimately decided to run, and told me recently that Specter would have to move into the Democratic mainstream on a number of issues if he wanted to avoid a primary challenge.
Apparently that move didn't happen swiftly enough.
On MSNBC tonight, he said his official announcement would come in the not too distant future--perhaps a matter of weeks.

I guess that means Rahm better bully and threaten Sestak's family to get them not to give their blessing to Joe.
Sestak is the definite underdog, but primaries usually cause the candidates to appeal to the base meaning Specter will have to make promises he'd probably rather not.
Specter has a better chance in a closed Democratic primary than the closed Republican primary because he'll have the Obama machine behind him with endorsements and appearances. In the very least with Obama and the machine having to go to bat for him, it might lead to more loyalty in the future. Because once Specter is re-elected, he's free to do whatever the hell he wants because this will probably be the last time he runs.

Soon as he's got a Senate Campaign donation mechanism set up, I'm sending him a bit o' scratch. I didn't lie Specter as a Republican and I like him even less as a DINO.

Yeah, this ought to be good for at least 3 Specter votes. Other than that, I hope he loses the primary.

Spectar is PA's Lieberman. Sestak may not be Ned Lamont, but any DEM is better than Arlen. I live on the opposite coast, but will definately donate to his campaign.

I live in PA and will definitely give some money to Sestak. No, he is not a solid liberal, but remember, this is PA, the most conservative state in the Northeast (even more so than NH, which is moving towards gay marriage). Despite representing a majority-Republican district, Sestak has taken the lead in pushing for a repeal of Don´t Ask, Don´t Tell, saying he wants to be a sponsor of such legislation and saying that as a Navy Admiral he commanded sailors who later came out as gay. (Compare this to Obama´s silence on this issue.) Moreover, I think the guy has Presidential ambitions and realizes that he has to move up to the Senate now, since this is his best shot. Sestak is the real deal. I only wish he had announced prior to the Specter switch, which might have led old Arlen to retire with some shred of dignity.

Well, Obama definitely can't claim he's commanded sailors who later came out as gay. That's for sure!
The gay community goaded and pestered Clinton to handle gays in the military right away. And Clinton, being the undisciplined people pleaser he is, jumped on the issue without a plan early on.
He wasn't silent on the issue but he also had no game plan and didn't work in concert with Congress to get it done. He also got rolled by the military and the Congress and came out with the disastrous DADT as a weak consolation prize.
Obama appears to have learned from Clinton's mistake of jumping the gun. Too bad many in the gay community haven't learned a thing from that bungled experience.

Based on today's numbers, Sestak hasn't got a chance. But he probably already knows that. More likely this is a move to push Arlen to the left.

"Based on today's numbers . . . "
That says it all, doesn't it?
Sestak wouldn't be raising all that money and pissing off the Democratic machine if he didn't think he had a chance.

I don't think challenging Specter will piss off the Democratic machine. As I previously stated, pushing Specter to the left is a good thing. And as for raising money and name recognition, when you actually have little chance of winning, politicians do it all the time!

That poll does not reflect how we conduct elections.
Sestak will face Spector in the Democratic Primary, whereas the poll reflects his support among the general population. Sestak's support is on the left, which is more dominant in the primary.
In the general election, Sestak faces the loathsome Pat Toomey. By then, the numbers will change dramatically.

If Sestak's candidacy doesn't accomplish anything else, it will at least force Specter to vote like a democrat between now and the election.
Sestak must remind the voters that Specter is not a democrat because he wanted to be a democrat. He is a democrat because it was in the best interest of Arlen Specter. So far, he has voted like a republican.
Don't misunderestimate Sestak's ability to rally the labor vote. Polls have little value this far out.

Sestak's numbers are low because outside the Philly area he has no name recognition in the rest of the state. The numbers will rise as he campaigns; I think being an ex-Admiral that commanded a carrier battle group is worth a bundle.
