TPMDC Morning Roundup

Specter: "Do I Want To Stay In The Senate, Of Course I Do"
Sen. Arlen Specter (D-PA) held a town hall event last night in his home state, re-introducing himself to voters as their new Democratic Senator. Specter bluntly acknowledged that a desire to remain in office was a reason for his switch. "Do I want to stay in the Senate, of course I do," said Specter. "Do you like your jobs? Sure you do."

Hatch: Obama Promised Not To Nominate A Radical For SCOTUS
President Obama called Sens. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and Arlen Specter (D-PA) yesterday to discuss the Supreme Court vacancy. Hatch told reporters that Obama promised "he will not pick a radical or extremist." Hatch added a word of caution, that there could be a big Senate fight if Obama "nominates someone contrary to what he told me."

Gates: There Is No "Grand Bargain" With Iran
Sec. of Defense Robert Gates told reporters on his Middle East trip that the Obama administration is trying to reach out to Iran, but so far Iran's response has not been positive. "We're not willing to pull the hand back yet because we think there's still some opportunity," said Gates. "But I think concerns out there of some kind of a grand bargain developed in secret are completely unrealistic."

Palin To Join GOP's Town-Hall Initiative
Sarah Palin has officially accepted an invitation to join the Republican Party's new town-hall meeting initiative, the National Council for a New America. As CNN points out, this comes shortly after Rush Limbaugh had vocally criticized the group for not including Palin, though it does appear at least possible that there was a genuine communications lag between the NCNA and Palin's office.

NYT: LaHood Has GOP Résumé, Cabinet Post, Odd Jobs
The New York Times profiles Sec. of Transportation Ray LaHood, finding a man who is not so much an expert in transportation as he is an expert in Washington and working with Congress. "I don't think they picked me because they thought I'd be that great a transportation person," LaHood said bluntly, going on to explain: "They picked me because of the bipartisan thing, and the Congressional thing, and the friendship thing."

I'm so happy Mister McCain picked me to be Queen of New America! It's cause I'm pretty! Yay!

user-pic

LOL

Should be: Queen of "Real American America"

not those unreal unAmerican Americas

Seriously, TPM, you're going to keep letting him spam here? Seriosuly?

Depends on your definition of "radical" or "extremist" is, I guess. Elana Kagan? Fine by me, hardly a radical or extremist. But to Joe the Plumber and Michelle Bachman? Well, hell, Torquemada would be a lefty to them.

user-pic

That's it exactly.

I just want someone who's as far to the left as Alito and Roberts are to the right, and who's as forceful in making his or her case as Scalia.

Of course, that would send Hatch, Sessions and all these other looneys into a "radical," "extremist," "socialist," "communist" name-calling frenzy.

user-pic

"Joe the WTF?" Are we still talking about him?

The sense of entitlement Specter, Lieberman and Burris have to their Senate seats is appalling. It’s all about them and their fragile egos vs. the people they represent. They do what’s good for them not us.

I sort of feel sorry for Specter and for anybody that old who chooses to stay in office, including Byrd. If I live to be 80 and I still have to go to work every day, I don't think I'll be counting myself among the lucky ones. But Specter has held on to that kind of power for so long that he can't let it go to enjoy retirement. To be that in love with power is a sickness and I think it's sad.

"Do I want to stay in the Senate, of course I do," said Specter.

Then how about proving you deserve to stay in the Senate? How about showing that you'll help working families raise their standard of living by going back to your original position on the Employee Free Choice Act? How about demonstrating that you put the health of Pennsylvanians above the provides of private insurance companies by backing a public health option in health care reform?

If the answer to these questions is yes, he'll have earned it. If no, then Joe Sestak has a far better claim on the job.

"put the health of Pennsylvanians above the PROFITS of private insurance companies"

I accidentally tuned into Laura Ingrahm's radio show this morning and she was railing against National Council for a New America. At first she said she couldn't remember the name because it was so dumb then she went off on how she doesn't want a new America. She just wants America.

Of course, this was prior to their darling Palin stating she would join. Now that Moosolini has made her decision, the right wing radio will have to back track.

I still am in awe how a bunch of AM opinionators are running the Republican party. If you don't pass their sniff test, they demonize you and tear down your character. Heck, they all did this to John McCain right up until he was nominated.

What think tanks work with right wing radio on messaging? That's a story I would like to read about. Put in some undercover investigative reporters and dig up a nice story on it. I'm sure it would be a fascinating read....or not. It may just be a bunch of pot belly folk drinkin' Schlitz around a camp fire and slammin' empty cans on their heads, spurting out whatever comes to mind. Err...call him a terrorist lovin' commie, no wait, an uumm...errr...a nazi fascist, yeah that's it. Put out the memo that Obama is a nazi fascist...now, who wants another beer?

The republican will fight anyone President Obama chooses for the Supreme Court, lets not kid ourselves. The republicans will fight against Obama's pick just because its Obama picks. Funny how I never saw these kinds of threats and rancor from the republicans when Bush picked Roberts and Alito. They wet the bed they were so happy. Lastly, grow up Sen. Hatch and take your veil childish threats and shove them up your ass.

These republican jackals still get over the fact they lost and to the victor goes the spoils

user-pic

I wish someone would ask Hatch why it was okay for Bush to pick a justice who represented the extreme right but Obama must pick someone who is acceptably moderate? And, why do the Republicans still think they are the ones calling the shots in D.C.?

user-pic

So true.

I think Roberts decides nearly all cases wrongly, but I will admit that he is qualified to sit on the court.

Republicans seem totally incapable of making similar statements about Democratic nominations to the court.

user-pic

It's not hard to understand why PA Dems would vote for Arlen Specter against a nutjob like Pat Toomey in a general election. As irritating as Specter is, there's no question that he'd be vastly preferable to Toomey.

What I don't get is why Pennsylvanian Democrats would rush to embrace Specter over other candidates like Joe Sestak in a primary, especially after Specter has spent much of the last week thumbing his nose at those same Democrats. Specter has made it as clear as he possibly can that the ONLY reason he has switched parties is because he can't win the GOP primary. All the talk from Specter about how the GOP has finally gone too far right is transparent hogwash; today's Republican Party is no different from 2004's GOP, and Arlen was perfectly happy to run as a Republican then with the full support from one George W. Bush.

user-pic

To what's left of the Republican party ANY Democrat or Democratic appointment is a radical.

During the 8 years of the Bush/Cheney gang the mantra of the Republican/Senate/party regarding appointment of judges by Bush was "He/she is well qualified." Lets see how "well qualified" fares with Obama appointees.

user-pic

Specter will leave the Dem caucus and run as an independent when Obama and Co. along with the Rendell Machine can't stop a primary challenge.

Hatch: Obama Promised Not To Nominate A Radical For SCOTUS

I guess we can infer from this that Hatch didn't promise not be an asshole.

user-pic

"he will not pick a radical or extremist." - ???

Obama promised not to nominate Bill Ayres?
